This centrally located hotel, right next to the mall, offered a luxurious, quiet, and comfortable stay. My room overlooked a beautiful park with a serene Ferris wheel view. The cleanliness and comfort were outstanding. The staff, both friendly and professional, ensured a pleasant experience. Their breakfast selection was diverse and satisfying. Overall, it's a perfect spot for a serene yet indulgent stay amidst the city's hustle and bustle

We had two stays, one for one night and one for three after attending the Eagle Festival in western Mongolia. Arrival and check in was smooth and efficient. The front desk was able to hold a bag for us for the three days we spent away at the festival. We had breakfast included which was an easy way to start each day. The Nadam restaurant had Oktoberfest going on the night we arrived and we ate there again one other night. Service there was a bit slow to absent for both nights.
The rooms were pleasant, roomy and clean. Beds were comfortable and there was a soft and a firm pillow for each person. We didn't have any special requests although I'm sure they would have been accommodated. The showers were roomy and water pressure/temp control very good. Wi-Fi was stable and strong throughout the hotel property. No password so connecting was easy.
The hotel complex is located in a very convenient location which is great once you're there but can take some time coming from outside (tours, airport etc). We were able to walk to most attractions from the hotel and dine/drink in the area within walking distance.
Overall pleasant staff, comfortable rooms and convenient location. Well worth considering while staying in UB.

They are doing are remarkable job considering that this country is only beginning to handle large numbers of tourists and people connected with the growing mining and business industries.
The rooms are lovely but more staff needs to speak English. Trying to get featherless pillows can be a challenge.

The second challenge is the breakfast buffet. Management could make a big improvement if one person was assigned to make sure the platters were refilled. The current system does not work. Additionally the person who make the omelets needs to understand a little English. Maybe the hotel could provide some English training for staff.

We had a marvelous Chinese dinner in a private room for 19 around a round table that was first class.

The best part of the staff is customer service. Mike , in particular, was extremely helpful when called to retrieve something left in the safe in my room. He cooperated with my guide and all is well and received in the US.
Thank you.

This is our second and last stay in a Shangri-lay.

Let's start with the good. The position is excellent - right next to a big mall, a park, amusement park and many dining options as well as close to centre of town . The rooms are very big and well equipped .

Let’s skip right through to the bad . Breakfast . Upon arrival there was possibly a handful of areas that were not dirty and had a table setting , but at the same time the restaurant was maybe half full. All the cooked oats had run out , as had the fruit and salmon. There were no glasses for juice or bowls for cereal and the juices were mostly empty or had a dash of juice left . Two yoghurts left in a massive bowl and the bread and pastry area seriously in need of a refresh . Day 2 was the same with no nuts or raisin or boiled eggs or coffee left . Again about 2 yoghurts available . They constantly say they consider all allergy’s or intolerances , but their cement coloured gluten fee muffin was inedible . Day 3 dawned no different . The hotel was way less full and yet tables were left uncleaned; no boiled eggs, raisins and nuts; rice dishes were just scraps left, no gluten free bread either. Likewise when staff do clean the tables they just sweep all the dirt on the floor . Plus the state of the chairs and the tables in the restaurant are grim - chipped, dirty upholstery and linings coming out underneath .
They will tell you that their hotel is full and it’s a public holiday so that’s why the breakfast is a disaster . This is really an unacceptable excuse as they are a 5 star well established hotel chain and this is not their first public holiday. This is just plain poor organisation and management.

On our first day out we were fine from 9 to 6pm and came back to our room which had not been made . We went down to management to complain and their excuse was again that it was a holiday …

With that kind of attitude there is no hope . I don’t think a Holiday Inn or Formula One would get away with this kind of attitude to service .
We will not bother with this hotel chain ever again .

Staff let me go to bed with wet hair; let a male engineer go to a female guest's room alone at 2am in the middle of the night.

I washed my hair at 1:00 am and when I wanted to use the hair dryer I realized it was broken.

Called housekeeping to ask them to send a new one. The response was that housekeeping was off duty and would work in the morning.

I said, I need a good hair dryer, which is a service any hotel should provide. Response, housekeeping is off duty and will be working in the morning, he doesn't have a key for the hairdryer.

I said, your housekeeping's commute has nothing to do with me, I just need a hair dryer, are you going to let me sleep with wet hair? Reply, he has no key and no way to get a hair dryer.

I said, call your manager. Repeated the question to the manager and said send it now.

Ten minutes later, someone came, I opened the door to find a male engineer, alone, at this time of the night it was two o'clock in the middle of the night and I was a female. I was tempted to ask Shangri-La what the hell were you thinking?

Then I opened the door to my room and at two o'clock in the middle of the night, the man stood in the middle of the hallway and the door to the room, waiting for him to finish his repairs.

I felt like my personal safety was threatened!!!!

Once again, the entire time, no one, not a single word of apology was uttered to me.

I stayed at the hotel for one night and one dinner, and the dinner experience was not good.

The room amenities were also a lot of things that didn't make sense.

The waiters in this hotel all, I mean all, looked unhappy. I didn't see a single smiling face from check in to check out.

This is the worst review I have ever written for a hotel.

I can't believe this is Shangri-La and everyone at the hotel should be ashamed of themselves for this.

We arrived already at around 7 am in the hotel. The entrance hall is huge and pleasant. The greeting at the hotel reception was : Hello, if you want to get into your room now you have to pay half of the room price. Bang ! No, thanks, for 5 hours I do not pay half of the room fee (check-in time on my reservation was 12 pm).We stored our luggage and went to do some sightseeing with our guide.

Our room was dated but nice enough with a good view and very quiet. Unfortunately I did not sleep well, because you could not open a window and the air in the room was so stuffy (even with the aircon running for hours). It felt like suffocating in an old carpet.

The breakfast choices were amazing. The hotel catered for all tastes (European, Asian, Mongolian,..). BUT to get a coffee or cappuccino you literally had to CHASE staff (even though there weren’t many people in the huge breakfast restaurant).

The location is very good, next to a good shopping mall and a short walk from the city center with the parliament, state opera, etc.

Because I slept so badly and the „welcome“ was so brusquely I booked another hotel for our last night in UB after traveling thru Mongolia.

This hotel checks all the boxes for a 5 star luxury hotel in a major city. The English speaking reception, bell, and wait staff are helpful and friendly. The basic deluxe rooms are spacious, split bath/shower, functioning AC, have nice warm towel racks, comfortable beds and an outstanding breakfast buffet. The hotel is adjacent to an upscale shopping mall which provides many other dining options as well as shopping. It also has several ATM machines. We did not use the gym, spa and other amenities offered. While we were there, many dignitaries arrived, creating traffic jams and challenging access for pick up and drop off. The hotel is centrally located, so we were able to walk to sites and avoid the bad traffic aggravated by the torrential rain and flooding that occurred during our visit.

Overall stay was fine. Hotel is beautiful. Rooms comfy. The sports club that guests get to use at the connected mall is 5 star. Breakfast buffet and all day lunch dinner buffet has a huge selection of foods. The reason I took a star away is I asked for a 5am ride to the airport. My flight was at 840am. Each time I checked for a total of 4 times by 4 different front desk agents( I felt I needed to keep verifying ) I was told 5 am was too early to go and I should go at 6am. I practically had to beg and explain I like to get to airports early to avoid the long check in lines and for $100 one way to airport for 40min ride I should easily get to choose when I go to the airport. In the end I did get picked up at 5am but NOT by the hotel car which I paid for but by a taxi service. I stayed in room 1417 from Sept 15-17 if the GM would like to reach out to me via email to explain the push back from your front desk agents. I travel extensively. I don’t need to be told how to travel and when to travel. Extremely aggravating for a 5 Star hotel.

Cleaning staff was chewing gum when I I was asking to provide a service, it was so unfriendly.

The gym music selection is full of vulgar words - really not professional, we wanted to take a shower but it was so smelly with sticky walls in the shower. No one could give us a clear instruction how to use fitness machines, careless staff without basic English knowledge.

Stressful Parking, had to leave my car far away from location.

When I checked in, I told them I had left my passport at home in Ulaanbaatar, and they asked me to show proof that I was a guest, and treated me like a non-paying guest.
The food at the buffet restaurant was so bad that my daughter, who accompanied me, could barely eat anything. I will never go to a Shangri-La buffet again.
The facilities are great, but other hotels such as Holiday Inn Ulaanbaatar have much better service and are more comfortable.
