Detailed Reviews
I used to stay at the Continental Hotel since 2005. A great location near city center, large bedrooms, nice and cosy bar, better-than-average breakfast, and one of the best fitness center in UB were incentives for me to go again and again.
Unfortunately, quality is fading away.
Furnitures are quite old, maintenance is average.
However, staff is still extremely friendly and helpful and the fitness center remains a great one.

I stayed at this hotel in a summer during Naadam festival in July 2011.
The hotel is close to the city center and all attraction, but in a very peaceful and quite area.
The single room that I stayed in was huge with a four windows looking at two different directions. The bathroom was also big with center heating.
The personnel were very helpful with not bad English. The breakfast included various food and was very testy for Mongolian standard.

A hotel that was very good compared to my camping and buying live food to eat fresh in the forests two years ago. Third world. But it beats any Motel 6 in the states. US$50-70 for a night double. Watch what food you eat but breakfast was hearty, varied and substantial and there was coffee (brewed!). Staircases have no guard rails and it can be easy to fall 5 meters without knowing the danger existed. An English speaker almost always on duty, expensive for this country, but worth it for a first time visitor.

I have stayed at this hotel twice in the past twelve months.
I am planning a further visit shortly and will stay again for the value, location, comfort of this hotel - provided of course that the good reputation of this establishment has not resulted in its being booked out!!.

I visit Mongolia 2 to 3 times a year and over the past 7 years, i've pretty much tried all the hotels in Ulanbator. I tried the Gengis Khan hotel, Ulanbator Hotel, Kempinski, Sungit Grand, Bayanol and a few others but have to say that I prefer the Continental Hotel.
First and foremost, you will need to readjust your expectations for Mongolia. There is nothing that resembles Hyatt type qualities at the moment so if you have hot water and a relatively clean room, don't complaint. The location of the Continental is around 3 block from the Main square of UB, which is also the location of the newest and latest mall in UB.
Overall, while the hotel would be 2 stars by modern standards, it is a 4 star in UB.

I spent 3 weeks at the Continental in winter so I had enough time to have a good sense of what is available and what is not at the hotel.
I imagine in summer whene there are lots of tourists around the hotel may be better but at the time I was there it was not. However I do not blame them for it. It was the best deal I could get to be close to work and the staff tried really hard to understand what I wanted.
A few examples of the situations I had:
1. Bar was closed on Mondays, but also the first wednesday of each month, but also when they had a party there (which was every friday and sunday during my stay) and also when the bar mas was sick (whch happened twice while I stayed there)....
2. Restaurant was closed when they had a party or a conference so I would get back from work and find no way to have dinner but at my room. (the hotel is not close to any restaurant and a min walking distance is 15 min which in winter means getting frozen at -45º if you dont have really good clothes on)
3. internet went down on a friday. no engineer would come from the company untill monday...
4. the gym (I chose the hotel because it was close to work and had a gym) is open and if not someone can open it for you, but the treadmills (there are 4) are not working all the time..
5. the day I left at 6.00 AM i needed my invoice stamped. there was nobody there to do so...
Good things:
- The breakfast was ok
- the staff was nice
- they have a gym
- rooms are big (thats all, they are not fancy)
- heating works very well (very important in winter!!!)
- you can get a kettle to make your own tea
I could spend the whole day telling stories about my stay there but in any case I would not recommend the hotel unless you think is a good deal and you know the good and bad things about it.
To end:
I would be back there as a second option rather than other places I stay there.

The Continental doesn't look much like a hotel from the outside but it is ok as a place to sleep and located right around the corner from Japanese and Korean embassies and close to the main Square. This is supposedly one of the better hotels, but local sources told me that the Corporate Hotel and Kempinski Hotel are better choices.
The Deluxe Room was huge with an enormous sitting area and there was a very new 42” LCD TV that seemed very out of place in the Soviet decor room. I was there in the summer and there is no air conditioning but just opening the windows was fine. Internet was pretty fast, although charged by the minute.
English by front desk staff in the evenings is basic but the staff were friendly, even though it was a bit difficult to communicate. The buffet breakfast is an eclectic mix of western, Korean and Japanese dishes. The Korean and Japanese items were ok, but the western dishes were all slightly off. Pass on ordering the "pancakes" or "french toast" because they won’t be anything like you expected.
One gripe was that hot water wasn’t always available (although this is apparently the city’s fault, rather than the hotel’s)

After having tried many other hotels in UB (see my other reviews), I finally landed in the Continental and found « my » place in the Mongolian capital. It ticks all the boxes: when it’s – 35° C outside, you’d better get a well heated place, that gets as much of the glorious sunshine of the Mongolian winter in the daytime as possible to help keep the room warm, and the Continental’s rooms are usually at an angle with plenty of large windows to let the sunshine in all day long; the hotel is not directly located on an avenue, so it’s quiet; as mentioned by others, it’s got a real, 24/7, gym (even though some machines would need some maintenance/replacement and at peak hours it’s difficult to cohabitate with the regulars who seem to think that they own the place), I don’t understand how some reviewers missed it…; the rooms are large, with modern, bright furniture; internet is not lightning fast but is reasonable for emails and reading the press; food at the restaurant is not bad, the real issue is the overlit dining/banquet hall that is quite depressing, so I try to avoid it since Veranda, one of the best and most atmosperic restaurants in UB is within a 10 mn walk; there is a good supermarket, UB Mart, on the way to Veranda; the staff are friendly, speak good English, bend over backwards to accommodate your needs, and every single little problem is quickly fixed. Maintenance is often an issue in Mongolia, complicated by often cheap basis material (the cupboard is already slanting, the chair couldn’t hold a big weight, the toilet flush needs Herculean strength to be activated… ), so it’s good to know that a problem won’t hang in the air for days, as it happens in some other hotels in the city. Granted, not the perfect hotel, but a cozy, friendly place to go home to after work, in a city that is otherwise quite disconcerting for the Western traveller.
