Detailed Reviews
Stayed here for 2 nights, in its favour the rooms are clean, the location is convenient and the staff are helpful.
On the downside it is right by a couple of bars that are popular and so can be a little noisy, although it did not stop me from sleeping. It also has no lift and the 3rd floor is a long way up to carry any luggage. My room did not have a window but you don’t notice that to much and the rooms with balconies look onto the street so you are liable to be disturbed by the street noise.
All in all you get what you pay for and breakfast was fine.

We visited the Monsoon Hotel for 2 nights. The room and the shower were in a new modern style and lovely. Especially the staff was very friendly and helpful.
At breakfast you can choose between 5 sets of eggs and rice. They have a good coffee machine.
When we wanted to take a shower, we recognized, that the tap was broken, but they repaired it on the spot.
If you have problems with stairs, this hotel is nothing for you, because they do not have a lift.
I recommend the deluxe rooms with a balcony to the street. But the front of glass is not well insulated, so you hear everything from the street, so tale earplugs for a pleasant sleep.
Everything is in walking distance, and it is not a problem finding a tuk tuk for visiting all zhe sightseeing spots.

+1
The hotel is at a very good position in the centre of the city.
Less than 10 minutes walk to the royal palace and 5 minutes to the night market where you can taste some good khmer food (we felt safe to walk back from night market after midnight).
The room wasn’t very big, but comfortable enough for a couple of nights.
AC was working well.
It isn’t very sound proof, but since we’ve chosen a room without windows we didn’t had much noise nor light coming from the street, even if there are many red lights pubs in the block.
The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was big enough.
We experienced better cleanliness in other hotels in SEA but it was fine.
There is no elevator, but in the worst case you are at the 2nd floor.
The breakfast was average, but you have to wait 15-20 minutes at least for it to be cooked.
If you need to book Giant Ibis bus, the guys at the reception can do that for you at no extra charge and you get free pickup at the hotel too.
They also offered us a tuk-tuk pickup from the airport at 15$, but you can find many tuk-tuks waiting just outside the airport and they will charge you 10$ more or less.
For two nights here in a "deluxe double room without window" we spent €62,50 incl. breakfast.

The standard is okay and the room was clean. The beds are however hard and the management unable to give out any extra duvets or other ting to help save your back.
You should also be prepared that this hotel is in the middle of a red light street and with the glass doors in the rooms you will hear 'hello" from the street every 30 seconds until about 2 am. It sounded like beeing the neighbor to a mix of a kindergarden and a medium fun rollercoaster.
When I checked out they wanted to charge me 15 USD (!) for a towel that I used to cleaning up a spilt drink, saying it had to be replaced.
Avoid staying here.

I stayed here with some friends back in February 2016. I have great memories. The coffee served at breakfast was the best I have ever tasted. I have been trying to remember the name of the Australian writer who stayed here to write a book about Cambodia. His boom is on sale in reception, and it was the staff who told us about him. Does anybody remember?

In a rather chaotic part of town this is such a lovely well run hotel and with it's value you are so close to the riverside. What an oasis! The manager Mr. Sopot is the best of the best. I stayed for a month and I will definitely be back!!! The whole staff is as good as he is!

Am sad to blast an hotel that was probably great about a year ago and where staff was nice, but am nevertheless highly motivated to do so by the fact that I can't help scratching myself. The construction next door and the moldy bathrooms didn't help much either.
Not much seems relevant to say besides the fact that I have so many bites on so many regions of my body. There were so many bedbugs that I even found one that had gone out for a walk directly on the bed in the daytime (they usually hide from the light). I left it as proof that I wasn't lying.
Staff at least pretended to care about the information and said that they would handle it. They offered a complimentary 15 minute massage coupon (I'm just reading in now) to remedy the situation. Despite such generosity (sarcasm intended), I think I'll pass as the idea of lying down on one of their mattresses, even for free, is not all that appealing at the moment.
Naturally, I changed hotels, but went back the next day to speak with the manager and see if I could be more properly compensated as he had seemed reasonable and I did not feel a massage was sufficient in light of the extra expenses on top of the price of the room (I had to get EVERYTHING I own washed, buy bug spray for my luggage and suitcases, and also had to get antihistamines and anti-itch cream so somehow an 8$ massage did not seem fair. Conveniently, the manager was not around that day, but I did leave my contact information to discuss the issue and he did not call me back.
To say something remotely positive, the girl at the reception was very nice, the private balconies were nice (some are private and some aren't) and the location is very central, although I would not recommend it for families as there are several lady bars next door and across the street. As a matter of fact, I would not recommend to anyone in its current state or return myself.

I hate writing bad reviews, as you never know what the situation may have been or if something was a one time problem…etc. But I feel that this one is important. We stayed at the Monsoon Boutique in early February and it was OK (just OK until the night before our departure). There were a few ants around the room (alright, it’s Asia, there’s lots of bugs, I can deal with a few ants), the water was warm, never hot (also, I can deal with a warm-ish shower, it’s better than cold, but when you are paying hotel prices not homestay or backpacker prices you expect at least hot water), the bathtub was a bit grimy and in need of a good scrub (also, it’s Asia, hygiene standards are different), and there are at least three brothels on the street (Cambodia has some of the highest sex trade numbers in Asia, so also, not shocking). The pros? It’s in a good location, close the river, and its mostly alright.
That was up until February 9, 2014, the night before our departure. My mother and I were both asleep when the distinctive click of a key turning in a lock and our door lock snapping open woke us up. Which, by the way, as two women traveling alone is never a fun sound to hear at 3am. Then the door slowly slid open. It took a second for the shock to set in, and my mom jumped up to run over to the door. One of the hotel employees looked sheepishly at her and said “Oh, so sorry. My key works. Just checking room for maybe problem. Wrong room”. Right, you slid the door quietly open at 3am instead of knocking to check the room for maybe problem? The only set of master keys is held by the employees, two male ones of which are downstairs at all times at night to make you feel as if the place is being guarded. The best part? After he shut the door and ran off we turned on the lights, got properly upset, couldn’t find anything to jam the door with to feel like it was safe to go back to sleep, and I went down stairs to raise a bit of hell. The employee, you would think, would have of at the bare minimum made up a story like “oh, I’m really sorry, I went to the wrong room, so sorry for waking you”, or “Oh my gosh, someone came into your room?!”. No. Nothing of the sort. He instead looked quite nervous and after asking, did we maybe leave our door open (No, we certainly did not, the sound of it UNLOCKING awakened us) he said well, he couldn’t help me because he had been downstairs and didn’t know what I was talking about, sorry.
Now, at no point did we feel physically unsafe. I will give them that. But he most definitely was pulling a ‘night before check out grab and go’ and hoping to have grabbed whatever we would have been stupid enough to leave next to our door. Like purses, phones, etc. I’ve woken up with a fair few strangers in my room at night while traveling going for the same thing. He just didn’t count on us waking up and catching him.
So sure, if you are a single male or one of the many packs of them coming to Phnom Penh to engage in a bit of the late night business then stay here. If you are a family, couple, or a traveler not interested in paying hotel prices for an average hotel full of staff that sneak into your room at night then I really wouldn’t recommend it. It’s not a good feeling waking up to a stranger sneaking into your room. It doesn’t feel safe, and it doesn’t feel right. Especially when there isn’t even anything you can do about it like call the police, tell the manager, etc. Because you are in a foreign country, and these things happen, and hey, nothing was stolen.
Me? I’d stay with a family homestay next time. Or a different hotel. Your chances of getting robbed are less. Hate to write the bad reviews, but it had to be done.

Stayed for just 1 night of the 3 nights we had booked and left early because money was stolen from our room whilst were out eating dinner at night. When we notified the staff they couldn't help us and said it was our fault that someone got into our room, even though they mentioned their staff were the only people who have a key. We felt unsafe and had no trust in this place, so we checked out early and reported this to Agoda. However when Agoda phoned the hotel to confirm the incident, they claimed that no such thing happened and that no complaints were made. Staff also lied about checking video footage which monitored the hotel and would not allow us to watch to see what happened.
Other guests at the time also mentioned they heard people trying to enter their room at early hours of the morning, but luckily they were inside and nothing was taken from them.
Located on a dodgy looking street with brothels all around. The hotel itself was nice looking and clean but if you value your possessions and personal safety, my advice would be to stay somewhere else!!!

Response from Randylim, Owner at Monsoon Boutique Hotel
Responded Mar 4, 2014
As the owner as well as the management of Monsoon Boutique Hotel, we are obliged to response to unfair comment from our client to protect our hard-earned reputation. Our business is totally relied on reputation. Thus, we would not keep one stone unturned to protect it. The comment from Tim G and Ashleigh S as a couple amount to nothing less than defamation which is punishable under the Criminal Code of Cambodia. Let me set the record straight. Mr. Tim G reported to us in the morning of 1st March 2014 that he had $250 of cash stolen from his room while he was having dinner outside in the evening of 28th Feb 2014. He said the money was left on his bed. The story itself carries a nuance of fabrication as it takes great imagination to understand a guest leaving $250 in cash on his bed rather than keeping it in a safe or simply in his pocket. However, we were cooperative with Mr. Tim G all the ways through. We suggested Tim G to check out the security camera with us but he refused and rushed out. We went through it ourselves and found no trace of intrusion. The CCTV record is still available for inspection as of today and we would be more than happy to inspect it again with Tim G, Ashleigh S and /or relevant authority. As for the refund from Agoda, it is our policy to not offer refund for early check out. As for location, we are centrally located and in a tourist area with many pubs. It is not brothels or ugly area but PUBS. Some guests are happy being in a central location with a lot of places to hang out while some prefer quieter location. That’s why we made sure that it is clearly mentioned in the description on online booking website. As a service provider in hospitality industry, we make every effort to offer pleasant stay for our guests. This has been vindicated by the good reviews we have received from the majority of our guests so far. We deplore that our hard-earned reputation are on the brink of being destroyed by an unfair comment from a guest. Regards, Leakhena Ya

First the good - location, girls on front dek helpful and decent air con.
BAD - like earlier reviewer said the room safes have a default number that can be used to open. 7000 Thai Baht went from mine that I only noticed as I was leaving for airport. Lots of other expensive items not touched but I knew I had 10k THB for something specific. They took 7k. Two days previously my own safe number did not work so I used default and changed back to mine - totally my own fault I did not check contents at time and by time I did too late.

Hi. It is very easy to get transportation from the airport. You can take a tuk tuk for $9 USD. Tell the driver the name of the hotel (and you can mention that it's near the riverfront and near the Sun and Moon hotel - they'll know). Good luck and enjoy your stay!
PS: be sure to get breakfast there, it's great.
