Manager treats the paying customer with contempt and rudeness. Fake smiles and asking several times for Tips . When I left to go to Siem Riep for 3 days my bags had. been checked and opened .bad vibes at this place.
The hotel is not bad in itself. Quite clean and rooms are decent. However while we were away on our first day someone looked into all our belonging and stole our money. Luckily they only took dollars and for some unknown reason put back our credit cards and passports. Unfortunately, the put back things in the wrong way so we could tell someone had really inspected all our things.
This was the fourth time I have stayed here having spent 4, 6 and 4 weeks previously while working (from my room). This visit was only for 10 days but after 6 days I decided to move with many, many better options in Phnom Penh’s Riverside area. Firstly my on-line booking was stuffed up and I had to spend one night in 'Dara Reang Sey 2' across the street, four floors up with no lift! Secondly, I had to ask for the room to be serviced as housekeeping bypassed us on the first 2 days and forgot us again on days 4 and 5. The A/C. TV and hot water works OK but with 5 days to go (again, working in the room) I couldn’t bear to sit on a hard wooden chair and work in semi-darkness one minute longer. Even worse, the Wi-Fi was deplorable, difficult to reconnect and cutting out every 25-30 minutes. But what finally killed Dara Reang Sey for me was the grumpy attitude of the manager and paying over the odds for an extra few days. I booked and paid on-line for $23US per day for 6 days but when I asked to stay longer I was quoted $31US per day despite my several years patronage of the hotel and restaurant. So long Dara Reang Sey, it was nice knowing you. My Vietnamese travelling companion strongly recommends you steer clear of this hotel. He couldn’t believe it costs $23US for such poor service. And to quote my friend verbatim, “Lazy response if you ask any help, no elevator (although they won’t let you carry your own things to up and down the stairs, will you let them carry all things when there is only one staff to do it for you), no English-spoken employees, except for a grumpy body builder waiter in restaurant, a SUPER grumpy accountant lady, and a SUPER DUPER grumpy manager man (even though there is a young lady manager working in the restaurant, she is kind of nicer). Cop that Dara Reang Sey ;-)…
Just had the most amazing fried fish and only for $1.50 ! The service was wonderful the fish was the highlight of the food together with the spicy vegetable noodles. This was a Big surprise to us as we thought we were entering into Starbucks type café as it Decour is certainly similar. It’s not far from the night market.
For more detail please see my previous reviews of Dara Reang Sey in Phnom Penh because nothing much has changed in over 3 years on three critical points, location (obviously), amenity and value for money. Location: Only two blocks from the popular and busy restaurant/bar strip along the waterfront but just far enough to not be disturbed by the nightlife. Sleep quality in Dara Reang Sey is 100%. Amenity: AC, fridge, hot water geyser, CNN, BBC and (undubbed) Cartoon Network, movies, Nat Geo and Discovery channels and strong WiFi. An excellent restaurant on the ground floor, travel office, in-house laundry, efficient daily cleaning with complimentary water (2) and toilet paper. Friendly staff with very good English skills. Value for money: I paid $20US per night in Sept. 2013, $20 in May 2014 and $20 again in December 2016 (each time a street side room with 2 single beds). The hearty breakfast I described in an earlier post has unchanged and still costs $4.50. In fact none of the menu prices have changed in three years.…
