It is a beautiful island with crystal clear water and soft white sand beach... we are a family of 4 and with another family of 4 to celebrate a special occasion! Good delicious local Vietnamese foods, no menu to choose but you can ask what you would like in advance ... sea foods beautiful and fresh. Don’t expect western cuisine! Would be nice if some snacks can be ordered at the bar rather than just lunch and dinner. Staff are friendly and nice ... can do with more hospitality training then would be superb. Eco friendly resort so no single used plastic which is good. JULY is so so hot and no Aircon which we knew about but didn’t expect that hot. Could not be outside from 11am to 4:30pm as too hot and sunny. A family of 2 small kids had to leave early as it is difficult for them to entertain kids they advised. There are sun lounges with umbrellas but off the beach so not many people use. Also strange tiny flies everywhere, “bo hong” the local called. We do enjoy the time there and appreciated the nature ... however we think it can be much more it can offer!!!

Please do not expect luxury with fancy features because the resort follows eco-friendly retreat style. I like almost everything, including crystal-clear-water-white-sand beach just in front of my cottage, our cheerful drinks under a starry sky at mid-night, or the little dramatic adventure in the jungle. Just a small note on the food portion: it can be beef up. I really recommend this place, I will be back.

Our family loved Whale island. Yes it takes a while to get there but it's so peaceful and beautiful it's well worth the trip. It's basically about 12 bungalows right by the shore of a lovely little protected bay which you access by a 10 minute boat ride. The water is clear and inviting and there's a small house reef to explore in the bay. Due to the tide, at times there's very little actual beach but each bungalow has a lovely shaded garden in front to lounge in and then it's literally down 3 steps to the sea. The bungalows are colonial in style - 4-poster beds with ceiling fans. They are lovely but basic - the "hot" water is lukewarm, there's no air-con (though for out stay the ceiling fans were more than adequate) and the odd bug gets into the room and scurries away when you turn the lights on but you are living in nature afterall! We've been lucky enough to visit the Maldives and Bora Bora - whilst Whale Island doesn't compare to the 5-star luxury of those places, it is wonderfully, possibly equally, relaxing and beautiful to spend time in and at about 20% of the price of those resorts! I saw much written about the food - we experienced large portions of high quality local cuisine - very tasty but perhaps some dishes challenging for a fussy eater. Yes it's a little more expensive than elsewhere in Vietnam but you are on a tiny island afterall! A top tip if you find the portions too large is to order for less people at lunchtime (we were a family of 4 but requested lunch for 1 adult and 2 kids) and found this was just right. The bar overlooking the sea was lovely and relaxing for a pre-dinner drink in the evenings. Finally the staff. Again, much written on here about them. We found them all polite and highly efficient. There is a significant language barrier - we found only the guys at reception spoke good english. The waiting staff had very basic only. I think this is why some people felt the service was cold or even rude - simply a lack of language. I'd like to make a special mention and thank you to the guy from reception (I'm afraid I didn't get his name) who came back on the boat with us and waited for us for over half an hour until our taxi driver finally came - he could easily have returned immediately but it was very reassuring and kind to have him wait with us - top quality service. We stayed for 2 wonderful days and in the end wished we booked a day or two more. It was a calm, beautiful tropical paradise and a welcome break from the wonderful but at times frantic mainland Vietnam. I would have no issues recommending this to anyone of any age - family, couples, friends etc.

After reading all the reviews on tripadvisor about not to kindly staff we’re doubting if we should visit this place. But we’re happy we did! The place is beautiful, clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. There’s no menu, but theres a great variety of food at lunch and diner. The food is delicious. We can recommend this place to anyone

I stayed here for 2 nights as a rest stop on cycling tour of Vietnam, and it was a welcome and peaceful break. I loved the rather simple bungalows and the small scale of the resort, and the mosquito nets round the bed were both practical and stylish. Cocktails were pretty good and reasonably priced and the food was good too - but not the best we experienced on our travels. I think I'd have given 5 stars with some small touches. The bungalows are great, but a bit run down and the plumbing in my room was a bit dodgy so it smelled damp and hot water was not always available. Only soap bar provided and shower gel and shampoo in refillable containers would have been nice, especially as our group needed to travel light from mainland, and given the remote location there was no option to buy extras you'd forgotten.
