Stayed there for 3 nights. Front desk staff communicated in English so easy check in and out. Had what looked like a newly renovated room. Room was compact but surprisingly refined for a 3 star hotel. Bathroom fittings were top notch, all expected towels in a 5 star. Bedding was high thread count and most importantly for me it was clean, no smells. Aircon was nice and cold but made some noise on the 1st night. Reported it and it was fixed next day. No meals as I found out there was no staff since the pandemic. Easy enough to find food outside anyway being in town. A few doors up the road is also a convenience store (like 7-eleven) so easy to get some snacks. Good value and easy enough to get to/from the airport - especially with the heavy traffic of Ho Chi Minh City.

I stayed at the Empress for one night after a long flight! I arrived late at night and was greeted by name as I walked through the doors. I had the Jr Suite - I had doubts about booking this hotel as it was so much cheaper than anything else on Expedia - but I would stay there again in a second.
It was all very clean - the room was well equiped (stereo, cd player, minibar, etc) with a view over the city. The shower in the bathroom was great - two air con units- one in the bedroom and another in the sitting area.
Breakfast had both european and Vietnamese food. Service was great too - arriving late i had offers to go and get food from nearby restaurants.
Highly recommended.

Stayed here in 2016 and liked, then saw the refurbishment on google and liked what I saw. This is false advertising as only the foyer has been updated. They claim to have a restaurant (not true) dirty walls, putrid smell, carpet in hallways never been cleaned. Would give zero stars. Paid for a Superior room which was just basic. Very unsociable staff. A hotel with nothing going for it.

The Empress was the best 3 star hotel we used in Vietnam. There is a calm, inviting atmosphere throughout. The room was spotless and had been quite stylishly renovated (ours had carpet), particularly the bathroom. The service was friendly and the doormen went out of their way to help us in our efforts to get around town.

Stayed at Empress for 4 nights. It was a great experience as the staff were friendly and the hotel was cosy. The rooms were clean( tiled, not carpeted) except for a strong smell of cigarette smoke (we bought air freshner to mask the smell). Bathroom was in good working order although there's only standing shower. Hairdryer and bathroom slippers were provided and a pleasant surprise as these boutique hotels usually skip these "luxuries". Breakfast was average as the selection wasn't great but value for money. It took us 10 min to walk to the backpackers area( where there were alot of tour agencies) and 15 min to walk to the central market which is very convenient. If not, one could take a 5 min taxi ride from the central area of HCMC making the location of Empress accessible to other areas. We explored the hotel and nearby there was a street with modern fashion as well. Defintely recommended to stay!

My husband and I stayed at the Empress for one night in March 2007. I booked it via the only online 'last-minute' website that I am familiar with, and that is Wotif.com. As it was my first time to Vietnam, I chose to stay here for one night, and Liberty 2 Hotel for another night -- just to maximise my experience of the hotels.

Why did I choose Empress and Liberty 2? Because they were the cheapest hotels that were located in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), that also had reviews that I could find on Tripadvisor. I did not want to chance staying in a hotel without having read a single review on it.

Here is a summary of the Empress Hotel:

Building style and decor: As other reviewers described, the style is indeed "charming" in a tasteful, European way. Most importantly, it was CLEAN.

Yes, the bathroom was Clean too.

Location: Located westward in District 1's backpacker area. However, it was just that bit too far to walk eastward to Dong Khoi (HCMC's upmarket boutique strip) or even the landmark Ben Thanh Market, which is more centrally located.

(I live in hot and humid Singapore, so walking in heat is not a problem. But even I wanted to take a taxi out of the Empress into 'town'. Why? The dirt and dust in the air, plus crossing roads upon roads of constantly streaming motorcyles, cars and trucks, plus dodging countless touters and hawkers at every turn... all becomes overwhelming and mentally exhausting. Hence crossing even one block becomes quite an exercise in alertness.)

Staff: They were friendly and pleasant. They spoke English. We did not spend enough time at the hotel to find out how they would perform under unusual or trying circumstances.

Breakfast: Alas, we did not have breakfast there as we had to catch an early morning flight. I had read mixed reviews about the breakfast, but am unable to join in the debate. But fear not about the availability of cheap food in Vietnam: there are Pho (those famous Viet noodle soups) stalls everywhere.

Our Room: We had the Junior Suite for USD 52 a night. Incl. taxes, the bill came to USD 55. As other reviewers wrote, the room sizes are indeed Small. At least it is not Ugly And Small!

(Yes, do read the other reviewers' warnings about avoiding the basement rooms.)

No smell of cigarette smoke: The 5th Floor is the only designated non-smoking floor. Our room was on the 3rd Floor. Unlike other reviwers' experiences with the smell of smoke and having to buy an air-freshener to mask the smell, etc, our room was thankfully fine. If you stood at the ensuite doorway, there was a faint, almost imperceptible smell of cigarette smoke. But you would have to be searching avidly for the smell in order to detect it.

Our room was L-shaped with a (tiny) living area, and adjoining (tiny) bedroom area, with ensuite. The windows had darkwood shutters, very tasteful. It was not carpeted, but the hotel provided disposable bedroom slippers for those who don't like to walk on bare tiles.

Safe Box: Yes, there was one. All 3 hotels I stayed in had a Safe Box.

'Negatives': (1) Even thought it was the Junior Suite, there was no bathtub, only shower. Pity. There is nothing like having a soothing bath after a long day on one's feet!
(2) The aircon in the living area started to make a sharp whistling noise in the middle of the night. It was impossible to sleep through it; it was like fingernails scratching a blackboard. I had to turn the aircon off. Luckily there was a second aircon in the bedroom area.

Conclusion:
Should you stay here? There is no reason to avoid this hotel. It is more pretty and stylish than your average, naff budget hotel. I prefer staying in stylish, 'boutique-y' hotels, so it was worth trying it out. And it's cheap(er). But you might want to consider your needs and where you want to go while in HCMC.

Would I stay here again? If I had a car, or if HCMC had a decent public transport system, or even an underground/subway/metro, then yes. But.... my only options being taxis and walking, I would prefer to stay at a hotel closer to Dong Khoi and WALK. Empress is a lovely hotel, but I need to be in walking distance to the 'action'.

Having said that, I know that if a cool little boutique-y hotel like the Empress was suddenly plonked onto a side street off Dong Khoi, the price would rise considerably.

Pros. Clean room, no bugs, hot shower, good sized room and a little more than basic breakfast (noodles, toast, cereal, eggs, bacon and fruits). Helpful staff.

Only one Con. Not walking distance to night market or dong khoi, but only a $1-2 taxi

I recommend reading up about taxi scams*** There are a number of taxi companies which are privately owned and if youre not attentive they will start your meter at $10. Also we met a couple whom when refusing to pay the absurd amount, the taxi driver simply drove off with all their bags still in the trunk. Taxi rides around HCMC should cost no more than $1-5. Trusted taxi are VINASUN (we used this company everyday. Be wary because there are phony taxi which say "VINASUM" or "VINASON") and Mai linh. Also if the phone number on the cab is a repeated 2 digit number than it's general a good taxi. For example 3-87-87-87-87.
