My wife and I had booked at 17-day trip through Vietnam and Cambodia with G Adventures and Ho Chi Min City (formerly Saigon) was our final stop in Vietnam, prior to travelling on to Cambodia. The White Lion is a nice hotel, located on a busy street which might possibly make it hard to find if driving to it. Our room had an excellent bed, a safe, tea & coffee making facilities and we also had wifi in the room. The shower is inside a curtained bath, and the bracket was rather low, but it still did the job. Breakfast wasn’t great, but was enough to start the day, with many eating places to visit when out and about, seeing the sights.

In addition, the hotel is within easy walking distance of good bars and restaurants. There are atms nearby, making it easy to get local currency without walking far from the hotel. It is also possible to walk to the excellent Ben Thanh Street Food Market, though a taxi is obviously much quicker and doesn’t cost much.

We only stayed in Ho Chi Min City for 4 nights, and this hotel was ideal for our needs, so I’d happily recommend it for a short stay.

After reading some negative reviews I was apprehensive about finishing off our tour in this hotel. To my surprise, the room was large, mostly clean and our room had a window that looked out into the city (room 501). We thought it was more than adequate for a 2 night stay. The shower was less than conventional though but not the worst thing in the world. The hotel is located in District 3, so far to walk to the main attractions/sight-seeing in District 1, however, there are quite a few food options just around the hotel. We liked the sushi restaurant and the French baguette place. I’d like to add here that we got to peer into another room on the floor and it wasn’t that pleasant - no window (many don’t have windows). So request a window if possible! Also, the breakfast is not good. We ate their the first morning and decided not to go back. For us it was worth it to buy breakfast down the road at the Paris Baguette restaurant - very yummy & reasonable in price.

the hotel was nice. The location was away from most of the attractions we wanted to see so we had to walk a very long way. I had sushi just kitty corner from the hotel and it was very good. The breakfast there though was not good. There was very little for me to eat and I had mainly toast and fruit.

Stayed here for 3 nights as part of a tour with G Adventures. The hotel is a bit of a walk from the main attractions, particularly if you want to eat in the main market, but we did walk even in the heat of the day. Our room was big, but others were a bit more cramped. There isn't any outdoor space to enjoy, so it is really just somewhere to sleep. Breakfast was a bit less interesting that other places we stayed - coffee was awful

Location is on a very busy junction. Very challenging to cross the road outside it (although there are good coffee shops and sushi restaurant across the road - worth a visit). the room was spacious, and clean enough, but basic. The bathroom was awful, the shower was waist-high, and the bath was not sealed to the wall, so there was a rather dirty and smelly area around it. Breakfast was the worst breakfast i've had in any hotel, period! Although we had booked 3 nights in this hotel as part of our G-Adventures tour, as it was the end of our tour, we checked out of the hotel and into somewhere much nicer.

Our Tour group stayed here for 3 nights. Good location. Free WiFi. Breakfast was basic but sufficient.
We had a corner bath which was great.
Lots of local shops, restaurants and Walking Street all within 10 minutes walk.

I would give 3-4 stars for the friendly staff in the daytime and the hotel built about a year ago so everything is still new. BUT, when I was looking for the stair’s location relative to my room if there is an emergency situation, and to my surprise there is NO STAIR available at this hotel.

When I asked the helpful receptionist (during the day) where is the stair, she told me there is no stair built at this hotel. I then asked what happens if there is a fire or the elevator broke or lost power, she said that everyone has to use the portable ladder to climb down from the window. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? And adding to the insult, there is NO portable ladder available in the room.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO? WOULD YOU STAY AT A PLACE LIKE THAT?

Below are some other nuisance during my first couple nights.

I had some family members come and visit in the evening before we go out for some drinks and the male receptionist at night did not allow them to come to my room. I had to come down to the lobby to meet them. He said the hotel policy does not allow that (as he was expecting some money).

I also asked for an extra pillow in addition to the two provided. The evening male receptionist brought the pillow up but said why I would need another pillow when there are two already in the room. Isn’t it too weird for a front desk receptionist to ask that?!

There were no real restaurants (comfort sitting, A/C, etc.) within walking distance around this hotel. You need to go to District 1 for that.

I hope everyone read my review and stay away from this hotel. There are so many hotel in the price range in the city to choose from. There were some previous reviews about this hotel before mine and I am sure all past as well as current patrons only use the elevator and not even aware about the “No Stair” issue at this hotel. I wanted to write this to raise a big RED FLAG.

Arrived and was told hotel is full, will shift us to another hotel SEN VIET HOTEL, claiming they were under same company. As it was already sunset, we agreed and just want to rest asap. I booked for two nights so i did not pack in the morning and left room. came back in the afternoon with my luggage already packed by staff including safebox item.... Obviously furious by their action i insist they called up White lion staff. a lady came over and told us to go back to white lion to check first. so we did, luggage transferred by hotel staff all the way up to our room.

When we checked, valuables were missing and damaged (they just grab a plastic bag and put in all our phone/white caps with shampoo and all wet items). SEN VIET insisted we already left and has nothing to do with them, should check before leaving. and WHITE LION deny all responsibility since did not happen in their hotel and suddenly, two hotels arent working that closely anymore. both side pushing to another, so we decided to call the police and was told police does not work on weekends?! hmmm...

After insisting, went to the police station and after communicating in their language, they keep laughing and wasting our time from 3pm to almost 8pm. I took picture of hotel room with our items before leaving that morning. With the proof i have my items and allow them to go to my room to search since they were the one transporting it. more unpleasant incident but so far White lion lady is the only person who knows English and seems really nice. So when they went to search, i deliberately let her enter the room before me and show them everything...When we went back to police station she can claims that she didnt see.... and when i said i let her in first, she said shes standing at an angle that cant see clearly??? the room is only this big.....

Contacted insurance agent and embassy. No one able to help. Was told to get a police report at least since have proof of it. But police refuse to write report claiming he must find out what happened and we have to leave the next day. So in the end we gave up. Embassy did said alot trying to help but it was obviously things that we would have thought about....

White lion first promised to surely settle this issue which they didnt, then say they will give a report which the lady ending her duty and leaving non-English staff and could not reply to anything we asked. manager not able to speak english at all. Since we have pictured of white cap before we left the hotel, she promised to wash that for the very least. When we went to have dinner and came, she was already away and we were told by another staff who knows cantonese that they are unable to wash since we are leaving the next day....whatever they say, empty promises.

I stayed there for one week. I booked directly from hotel, I was discounted thirty percent and upgraded nice room. I felt happy with there promotion. First time I stayed at White Lion hotel, I was very impressive about the staff. They were very honest and enthusiasm, helped customer every where. Facilities are new and clean. Near hotel have many Vietnamese restaurant. I am over satisfied with White Lion hotel and I will comeback there next time.
