With inter-provincial travel back on, I decided to go for a drive. With Chiang Mai being seven and half hours' drive and still pretty much closed, I chose to go south. On the whole, I generally avoid Pattaya but I a friend of mine who has been living their since 1992 is close to finalising early retirement. I thought I drive down and catch up. Looking at accommodation options, and with supporting recommendation from another friend, I selected The Hideaway based on price and proximity to my second friend's bar. And I wasn't disappointed. I got an excellent rate due to the Covid situation, parking, quality, service, a large, quiet room on the first floor, two bottles of water per day, and complimentary toiletries. The bar downstairs has a large and diverse range of hotmand cold beverages and there is an attached restaurant (see review). The location is spot on minutes' walk from Second Road, a variety of restaurants and shops, and a five minute motorbike taxi to the beach, Soi 6, or Walking Street if that is your thing. Andy is an excellent host that has been in the industry here and abroad for a very long time. Very welcoming and professional. It was nice to speak English face-to-face for the first time since February. I was initially booked for two nights and ended up staying for five. I'm down again in November 2020 for my mate's retirement party and I can't see any reason, aside from a new lockdown, or there being no vacancy, that I'd stay anywhere else.

My 3rd consecutive visit to the Hideaway was as good as my first - so top marks for consistency. English-owned and managed by Andy, who is on-site to welcome you and deal with any questions or issues. He leads a team of hard-working & efficient staff, many of whom have become friendly, familiar faces over recent years. The rooms are modern, large & clean with en-suite and all "mod cons". Prices are competitive. The Hideaway has the facilities and standards of a good 3 or 4 star hotel, but the informal friendliness of a guest house. The bar area downstairs offers the chance to meet and socialise with other guests and locals over a cold beer or the pool table. After a night out in nearby Soi LK Metro, Treetown, New Plaza or Soi Made in Thailand, you are just a few minutes walk home, as the Hideaway is just off Soi Buakhao. You get the benefit of being close to all the amenities/action, but 100 yards off the main road, so a much quieter location. And if you want to get to Beach Road, the "cut through" to The Avenue Shopping Centre allows you to do this with a 5 minute walk. Highly recommended for a short break/holiday stay. PRO TIP: the on-site "Ribshack" restaurant serves delicious Thai food, ribs & grills etc and one of the best Full English Breakfasts in Pattaya.
