Moonhut Bungalows is an idyllic Thai / European family operated resort with twenty two bungalows & three houses, built in the traditional style of a Samui beach resort. All rooms have private balconies with views across the sea towards the neighboring island Koh Phangan and all have their own, clean, western style bathroom with shower. Personal safety boxes are installed in all rooms. Guests have a choice of air-conditioned bungalows or standard rooms with fan.
Loved Moonhut - simple & quiet yet right on the beach - range of different rooms to stay - great restaurant with fantastically helpful staff - close to other nice restaurants bakeries and Cafes - highly recommend About Cafe for breakfast with the BEST coffee.

Stealing from the locked safe! Be aware! Somebody has an extra set of the keys from bungalow A7 and its safe box (both have cheap padlocks). There are no video cameras on the premises except the restaurant and the parking lot so there is no chance to find out who had been entering your bungalow while you weren’t there. We realized that some money were missing ONLY because the thief broke the zipper on my waist bag with credit cards and we decided to check the envelope with money, otherwise we wouldn’t spot the missing bill almost right after it happened. (they stole only one 100-dollar bill out of 6 to make it less obvious, didn’t touch any other currency, but couldn’t close my wallet properly and partially broke it) The police report was made. The owner of the hotel replied to my email (one day later) like “we don’t have the spare keys from the safe box” (I could show him how to get one if he was there, but at the property was no manager, no receptionist, and there is no phone only owner’s email). The total lack of control at the property leaded into the situation we experienced. 1. Please don’t use the padlock they provided, buy your own! 2. And check your belongings in room on regular basis. If you suspect that some money/goods were missing from your room or locked safe inform police and your aggregator immediately. The bungalow we stayed at was fine. Yes, it was really outdated, but we knew what we were booking. For two days of our stay there was no cleaning service. During the day it gets super hot inside and the fan isn’t capable of fixing this issue. Only in the evening when you open both windows and turn on fan the bungalow cools down. The noise of the crickets is insane, very loud. The beach was good, the territory was clean. We didn’t complete our stay for obvious reasons and had a hard time finding another hotel for decent price. Also we had to spend time on making police report, contacting Agoda, our insurance company etc. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this hotel. Avoid! …

Response from Kwanruan B, Owner at Moonhut Bungalows
Responded Apr 5, 2023
Dear Olesya Gruen Osterstrom, We were very sorry to hear of the problem you encountered whilst staying at Moonhut Bungalows and have taken it very seriously. As we stated in our communication with you, we do not keep spare keys for the safe boxes in the bungalows, but clearly as there was no obvious damage to the box or lock, it appears that somebody either picked the lock or had a key. As such we have purchased and begun installation of keyless electronic safes for all bungalows in order to avoid further such occurrences for future guests. It is unfortunate that on the day this happened I was away and did not receive your email until the following afternoon ] by which time you had already left, which I was unaware of until I returned. I would have been happy to talk to you in person to try to find a resolution for you, but unfortunately that was not to be. We are still waiting to hear from the Tourist police as to whether they have any information. We do have CCTV at the front and rear entrance to the restaurant and also at the parking area. We have no intention to install further cameras looking at the bungalows as we consider that it would be an invasion of our guests privacy whilst sitting on their balconies and that they should should not feel as though they are being constantly watched. Regarding your other points, April is the height of summer on Samui with temperatures of 35 degrees plus, which of course means that our fan bungalows do indeed get hot inside and fans do no not actually reduce the temperature only create air movement. We do have AC bungalows for those guests who find it too hot. Also at this time of year the cicadas come out, they are noisy but without cutting down all the trees, there is nothing we can do about them. As a small traditional Samui style beach bungalow resort, we do not intend to update the bungalows further than as mentioned above, as you said you knew what you were booking. The sunbeds do get a lot of use and we try to keep them in a serviceable condition as best we can. Again we are very sorry for the experience you had and trust that you enjoyed the rest of your stay elsewhere on Koh Samui.

We stayed at Moonhut for a week in the family bungalow, which was perfect; extremely clean, very well appointed and in a perfect beach view location on the property. The restaurant was amazing, from fresh baked goods (cookies, cakes, cinnamon rolls) through breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu was vast with both western and Thai options. The staff were very warm and welcoming throughout our stay. The location in central Maenam was perfect for walking on the beach and or road. Highly recommended!

Located directly on the beach with a great view to K Phangang, Angela’s at Moonhut is a well kept secret. Great ranging menu with Ruben Sandwich, Cob Salad, Seafood Saghetti and the normal range of Thai food choices. Excellent happy service staff. Good food, reasonable prices (600 for 2 plus drinks). We will be back.

Sorry but no. Run down, depressingly dark, dirty, unfriendly, not as cheap as you would expect. And don't bring in food/drinks from the outside, you might get expelled. Walking distance to Maenam, that helps.

15 years ago this was the best place to stay in Maenam. Now the worst...restaurant and bar staff don't care, owner never around, way too expensive for what it is, bungalows in dire need of repair and renovation, food overpriced and very small portions and the bar/restaurant closes really early. Only saving grace is quiet location and good cleaning staff. Never staying here again

We arrived with an expectation of a two night stay if the fan bungalows were ok. The female staff member we asked about rooms was almost hostile and tried to act like she didn’t understand my request. After repeating “could we please look at a fan room?” twice.....she went away and returned with another unfriendly, unsmiling female. We were told “ you follow her”. So off we go to a bungalow from 2004 when we last stayed here. The only difference was the bamboo floor I’d fallen through had been replaced. For a quoted rate of 600 baht in early June, on a rainy, windy Sunday we chose somewhere else. The bed had a spring or two awry. The place is in need of major maintenance. BIGTIME! The common area is a dark, dingy place and howling Malamutes really do belong in Alaska. We weren’t offered a food menu or encouraged to stay for a meal either. Give this run down place a big miss. …
