Ok. This is not exactly off the beaten path, since the city centre is pretty much walking distance away. But you will find that if you are without localised transport (i.e. motorcycle) then you'll be walking quite a bit once the back gate close (at 10pm i think). It's an apartment. Like the many apartments in Thailand with partial rental to travellers. There are also long-stayers, but these are the expats or the retirees. For short stay of around a week, this is one good way to cut cost. Loft Residence is at the end of soi 4. It's a tall building so if you're not a stairclimber, ask for a lower floor (if there is any). If you't not a good sleeper, do not get the room facing the nightspot or you'll be mad furious. The disco plays thump pumpin music and occasionally you'll also see fists and rods and chains flying on the loser who may have tried to tackle somebody else's girl. Yes gang fights are common in night spots. But that's the back gate. That's why it's locked. The rooms are basic, but clean. It's got toilet with hot shower and a tv set to keep you entertained with intermittent cable access (sometimes the weather does screw up reception). You can walk out to the street for food and the daily grocery. Keeps you alive. And if you walk out further, you'll eventually reach Chang Phuek gate. One of the many gates and walls in the Chiang Mai city centre. You want local? Then this is as local as local gets. Try it. Just to strike one off the bucket list. That you've lived with locals. Quite nice people the Thai. They will help you get around everything.

I stayed for 1 month and this place Was excellent! I know there are many good deals around the city but they're not always easy to find last minute having not previously been to Chiang Mai. I really liked the location north of the old city, near many attractions and food options (I also like to walk a lot). It's within cycling distance from everywhere I wanted to go. (I also like to cycle a lot) :). The staff was extremely helpful and sweet. When I first rented the room the shower heater wasn't working and a light was out which they addressed promptly. There is laundry service offered onsite. The Internet connection was good but sometimes Skype was difficult. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an economical monthly rental near the city. If I were paying a daily rate I would choose something in the old city or near the gate for less.

Stayed here for a night as our previous place was fully booked +ves: Cheap -ves: Bed really uncomfortable Rooms were cheaply done up When we asked for a sheet to sleep under they wanted an extra 60baht!! This seemed crazy to us! They continued arguing about it the next morning They wouldn't call a taxi or a tuk tuk and were generally rude, argumentative and unhelpful. (This is the first 1* review I have ever left on tripadvisor...)

I am sending this review ahead of yet another stay at the Loft. An apartment with long stay options, the Loft suits those who don't mind distance to travel to the main city attractions. Tuktuk can be hailed or booked via the apartment's office. Clean rooms. But do not expect hotel service standards. In return you get freedom and peace. Very few tourists Herr. Maybe only me? I was here 4yrs ago. It was a really good stay. Now I am back.

This is my second stay here at the Loft Residence. I stayed for a month in January and am now back for another 3 months. The staff are very friendly, The other guests aren't loud or otherwise obnoxious, I pay 60 baht and a lady does my laundry for me and folds it. The building itself has a nice appearace and the two different rooms I have stayed in have been just like an ordinary hotel room, clean ,with basic amenities and cable tv. The big and only drawback is the loud music, I can't believe they don't have noise laws here becuase that music goes on until 5 in the morning and often doesn't even start until 1 or 2 am.
