Family run hostel, very nice people very willing to help with anything, from giving directions to booking the next tour, even to booking the next hostel that you are going to be staying at. Common area is in the open so you'll be surrounded by many salamanders, geckos and mosquitoes (bring repellent). The rooms were big and clean, showers and toilets were clean. Computers and free wifi and several hammocks available to relax. We were picked up at the airport by hostel staff for free, he took us back to the airport for just 100 Baht. The beds were too firm for my taste.

The guesthouse is located on the other side of the old city, but it is still an easy 15-20min walk to find somewhere to eat, or book tours. It would normally be a quiet area, but as it was Loi Krathong, fireworks and firecrackers were being let off all night. I don't think it would have mattered where I stayed though, just part of the festival :)

Guesthouse is kept clean and the dorm room is spacious. One thing I would say is the beds are very firm. this may not suit everyone, but I slept very well.

Free wifi is available in the reception area, as well as free hot drinks and toast. I just wish I'd brought some vegemite as I got sick of jam... but there is a lovely little restaurant at the end of the street (out the gate, turn right) that serves a mean banana pancake...

Staff were very helpful with booking tours, advising how to get to places. They even collected me from the airport - return trip for 100 THB :)

The highlight of the stay was when we were shown how to make our own floating krathong to release into the river for Loi Krathong. it really brough the guests together.

We stayed at Gongkaeq Chiangmai Home for several nights before heading to Pai. The hostel has a lovely atmosphere, with the dorm buildings and private rooms arranged like little houses around the garden. There is lots of seating outside under an open-roofed area, and I loved the big comfy cushions and hearing the geckos and frogs at night whilst sitting out there.

Free toast available 24/7 was a great touch and there's a book exchange, two free computers and a washing machine (40B, can fit 11kg!) and racks/lines to dry your clothes on outside each 'house'. Rooms were clean with air con, reading lights and door locks. The showers and toilets were mostly fine, but there was a problem with the water on one of the days we were there. The front gate is locked at night, but guests are given a key so that they can get in if out later. The staff were very friendly and helpful in organising transport.

The location is ok - there aren't many places to eat, but you're very close to the Saturday/Sunday Walking Markets, where you can pick up great food (such as banana spring rolls for 5B), if you're there at the weekend. Other than that, there is also a 7-11 nearby.

My taxi driver had no idea where this place was. Luckily, I had printed the map beforehand.

My room was very basic. Cement floors. Bed. AC unit. Shower. Toilet. It reminded me more of an mobile home camp in the US than a hostel. I made friends with a lizard who I suppose lived in my bathroom.

The computer area was good, but everytime I was there I got destroyed by mosquitoes.

It's also located pretty far from the downtown/night market scene. Oh well.

A big group of us stayed in the hostel for 5 nights and we all absolutely loved it. It definetely became a home away from home for us and a great base in chaing mai.
The dorm was very simple but very clean with good air conditioning. Toilets were clean too.
There is a great atmosphere, very relaxing and really cool communal area for chilling out or using the Internet.
Som and the staff were so so friendly, welcoming and accommodating. They helped us in numerous ways. Ordering taxis, recommending different attractions with a discount etc. This was great.
I would highly recommend the hostel!

I couldn't recommend this place more highly - we had a wonderful experience staying here. The staff were very helpful and friendly, our room was tidy and secure with air-con which we needed! It has a large garden area and covered outdoor area with table and chairs and free internet access. Its walking distance in the city or a cheap taxi/tuk tuk ride back to the hostel. I want to say a huge thank you for making our Chiang Mai experience so memorable!!

After staying 2 nights at a REALLY cheap and not recommended place I found Gongkaew and I'm so glad I did! The staff was extremely helpful in booking everything from Thai cooking school to arranging transport to Pai and the airport.

Rooms: I stayed in the female dorm and it was clean, spacious and the air-con was POWERFUL! It was great to know that even though it was unbearably hot in Chaing Mai I was going to go back to a nice COLD room :) I also met a few great people in the dorm as well which added to the positive experience.

Bathrooms: The bathrooms are clean, concrete, and hot water worked well. Good setup.

The hostel also provides free wifi (which was a little hit or miss in the dorm) which worked fine in the common area. There's free coffee/tea and toast with butter/jam all day and certain mornings they had gone to the market and has fresh bananas or other fruit.

One of the best things about Gongkaew is that you don't feel like you're in the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai. There's a nice garden area and it's peaceful and quiet. No honking or motos all night. It was definitely a nice escape from the noise!

If I even return to Chaing Mai I'll definitely be staying at Gongkaew again!

We only stayed one night here but were suitably impressed. We would have liked to have stayed longer but they were completely booked out and I understand why.
This place was clean and well kept. Our room had an ensuite bathroom and air-con both worked well.
The common area is great with lots of places to sit and mingle with other travellers. There is free tea, coffee and toast 24hrs.
We had to move to another guesthouse and the owners were very helpful with recommending another guesthouse that was close by. They even drove us to the guesthouse when we checked out.
Would recommend this place as it is clean, cheap and well located.

Everyone at this hostel was incredibly sweet and helpful with all our queries and offered us free transport to/from the airport and affordable prices to drive us to the major attractions like tiger kingdom, doi suthep etc. The outdoor area is a great place to sit and relax in one of the many rustic chairs/hammocks, meet other travellers (who are all incredibly friendly) and use the free computers and wi-fi (chickens and the owners dogs will also wander around happily accepting any attention/bits of bread!). Out of the way of the busier tourist areas meant that we got a good nights sleep and cheaper and more authentic food in the surrounding neighborhood but still well within walking distance of the busier tourist areas and a 20baht taxi trip to the markets and other attractions around the city. Definitely recommended!!!
