Ninety years ago, Ellsworth Statler, father of the modern hotel industry, was quoted as saying “There are three things that make a hotel famous – location, location, location.” For a visitor to Bangkok interested in nightlife, tourist shopping, and easy access to transportation, The Tarntawan Hotel is a good choice. Formerly an all-gay hotel, (it is very close to Bangkok's famous gay night life)it is now positioned to serve the budget conscious mass market. The hotel is tired, much in need of renovation in public areas and the guest rooms. The rooms are adequately sized with normal amenities, including a refrigerator and bedside light controls. Breakfast at about $10 is a little pricey, but there are many nearby alternatives. The staff are first rate, friendly and very helpful. Housekeeping is very good. Lighting in the guest room not very good for reading. TV has scores of channels, even if it seems that about 35% of them are shopping channels.

Dear Khun Patrick, Thank you for staying with us, we indeed very appreciated your value feedback. We very glad that you happy in several area & services that we made while staying with us recently, those are very clear and proud to share with our team for their further encouragement. We sincerely accept that are now slightly change of the marketing concept from all-gay hotel to conscious mass market, in order to keep going on and a lot more competitive growing in the same range of hotel business. However, regarding your comments on the tired condition of the hotel, guest room, public areas, TV channels, lightings, etc. we are taking steps towards our on-going plans for further improvements in the future. The team and I are looking forward very much to the pleasure of welcoming you back to The Tarntawan Hotel Surawong Bangkok again on your next stay with us. Thanadon Tibkham Hotel Manager

I have used this hotel x20 plus times before and always regarded it as very good. It’s been a few years since I returned and have found many changes. -no more room information such as TV channel guide, room service menu, management please return these simple items -no welcome drink on arrival, no more personalized business cards upon check in, these are simple items and previously was part of the homely welcome to guests -no 24 hour breakfast menu now offered, whilst I appreciate that the mini buffet cannot be offered 24 hours, I would suggest that management could re introduce the 24 hour menu for breakfast for guests. This was a unique feature of the hotel -many staff have changed sadly, whilst the new / current staff are friendly enough, I can see a reduction of staff at reception and certainly breakfast, I think one staff is not enough at breakfast service -hot water needs to be revisited by management and guests should have hot water 24 hours a day with no interference from water timers -I think the guest cocktail welcome should be held more often. It is a nice gesture from management, I would suggest 3 times per week. -I would suggest a happy hour from 5pm till 8pm to encourage both revenue to the bar and guests an opportunity to meet. Buy one get one would still make the hotel a profit rather than the bar staff being paid with no or little customers -I would suggest that guests are encouraged to dine at the hotel by offering in house guest 20% discount as again it’s better for the hotel to make revenue than no revenue and staff are being paid for no busy restaurant -bring back the package deals which included a evening dinner, massage, gym entrance, this was a nice feature -I suggest a review of the tour operator as I did encounter issues with what I requested. But to my surprise was sorted out with a refund given by the staff member concerned. I booked a private tour and later found out it was shared with strangers. The tour prices are high and again tourism is effected by the string THAI Bhat so its better for all companies to earn a small profit rather than no profit. -I notice slight improvements to the rooms and clearly management are slowly upgrading rooms, I thinks lots more is required in a competitive marketplace -the new manager is friendly and does take on board guest comments which was refreshing as the previous manager was old fashion and I sensed homophobic. Well done to the new manager for your energy in these harder times Finally I would suggest that management are more proactive in email communication to their loyal customer database and should be encouraging guests to return with package deals and promotions in these harder times. Since advertising is free and effective. Customers like to hear from places that they stayed and makes them feel valued. All in all I will be returning and hope to see more changes on my next visit.

Whilst, the welcome drink supposed to be on upon guest's arrival, which will take more attention with our team, the welcome cards, special package deal, and tour desk will also be considering to improvement. I have stayed at this hotel before the take over by a differed company and wanted to try out the refurbished hotelroom. Good points 1. Carpets taken out 2. new mattresses 3. Staff still very friendly 4. Close to everything on Surawong or Silom Bad points • Transport ordered thru hotel was not there until 15 minutes after the rep called him, he was not even at the airport • For 3 night I had no HOT water only lukewarm or even cold, but next morning around 8:30 AM it was OK, it seems to me that the water system is on a timer and shuts off late afternoon and start again heating water in the early morning • Safe is very low, close to the floor and that is for older people a problem perhaps • I could get down to the floor ok but getting up was difficult • Not many overseas TV programs, or if there were I could not find them ,because no list of stations in the room or even a guest information folder

Dear Splinter49,   We thank you for staying at The Tarntawan Hotel Surawong Bangkok during your visit to Bangkok.  We are pleased that you have taken the time to share the feedback of your recent stay with us via TripAdvisor.   We appreciate your comments which are valuable to assist us in our continuous efforts to improve our product and services in the future.   We very much regret to learn that you were uncomfortable with the hotel during your recent stay.  The matters concerned in your comments have been shared among our team where improvements; The airport representative or driver, we have outsourced contract for the transportation company, which will bring up to their attention to investigate for improvement. What a fantastic place! What value for money! The room I stayed in was large and cool. I love the size of the bed and the cable TV. The room is dated but very clean. I didn't mind the carpet since I wear bedroom slippers all the time, even at home. So the carpets didn't bother me. There was a mini bar, a safe deposit box, a set up box to control lighting, alarm etc etc. The staff were all competant and speak good English. The breakfast impressed me, since I had read that the breakfast was simple. But there was a menu for you to select your main course and your preference of egg dishes. There was yoghurt, cereals, fruit platter, toasts and a few pastry selections. The tea pot could have been better insulated since I almost burnt my fingers touching on the metallic pot with matching handle. The place was just quiet and serene. I can see why some people say the decor needs upgrading but the amount I paid and what I got in return, my gosh, what value for money! Massage Parlors abound.
