Detailed Reviews
We actually stayed in Feb 2019. It was very much a last minute decision made while shivering in Nagarkot due to unexpected snow. Having seen the himalayas and experienced the joy of local children dancing in a snowfall that hadn't occurred in 9 years we made the decision to get to lower ground before we got stuck as we had flights booked within days. I wanted a day of warmth, a hot bath and a little luxury. We'll this place certainly delivered. There's a wonderful man that greets you with a smile and a salute as you arrive, the rooms are fantastic, lots of bright colours and LED lighting. The bath was enormous and so was the bed. We ate in the wonderfully crazy restaurant and the meal was delicious and had breakfast in bed before we sadly had to leave beautiful Nepal for our next leg of our trip. I'm sure we will return and plan on staying here again.

i had been in this hotel Royal Penguin Boutique Hotel & Spa Many Times.this time i mate Mr.Nepali, he is really a good guy and a happy person.i had stayed 3 nights ,i got chance only to meet him on my last day.
i had ordered the breakfast as early as possible.however there was a group of guest in the restaurant, though he was busy still he greeted and spoke with me for some time.
then he asked the waiter to take the order of mine,i was impressed,he might have worked in European Countries.
one of the waiter took my order for the breakfast,he asked to me if he can bring the coffee at 1st or after the breakfast.i am impressed.
lately what happen was anther person came just near my tables.he too ordered his breakfast.
i waited until the group breakfast comes, later after the group breakfast wast served ,the waiter bought a breakfast of the next table, who came after me.in this case i was upset.however i left the restaurant without having the breakfast in the room. i shouted at Mr.Nepali, still he tried to convey me,that it was about to come and as i was in the lobby, the breakfast was out from the kitchen.
i went to the room, after few minutes Mr.Nepali came to apologize and asked to make any kind of breakfast as i wanted,i again shouted at him.however i must'n have shouted at him.after all he apologized at me.my temper is high, after all we are an Indian.
he had tried his best to do a best service, only because of my attitudes,i had to leave the hotel.another reason,i left the hotel because my friend offered a room near American Embassy.
i would like to apologize the service team for shouting.
he and his team has patient and does anything to make the guest happy, may be the kitchen staffs delayed my breakfast.
however i would like to thank Mr.Nepali for his hospitality ,this kind of service is required ,i am sure the owner might have been happy with him.

This was I guess an average hotel. I wanted to stay in Thamel for a few nights of my vacation so I choose the quirkiness of Royal Penguin. The first room they showed me did not have working electric, they had been having power issues of the whole floor leaving the dark corridor leading to the room and the room itself room unsafe for any guests. Then they showed me a second room that did not have working heat or Wifi. Then the 3rd room didn't have working heat either but the staff said that it just takes a while to heat up. While waiting 45 minutes for the heat to kick on, I called the front desk again. They sent 2 more employees to come and look at the heater; one of them changed out the filter. It finally kicked on, but I should mention that the new room was a significant down grade and nothing was adjusted on my bill then or at check out. Water runs a yellow brown in color leaving me always feeling dirty. The hotel washes their sheets, towels and bathrobes in the same water so everything looks a bit dingy an unclean. I should mention that, some hotels in Kathmandu have clear colored water, they do not & the power outages are short but pretty regular. Staff were kind but most were not very helpful. Things I did like, FREE HBO in English, FREE room service breakfast which was pretty good and one of the housekeepers was very nice. Overall, the quirkiness of the hotel is not enough to stay here, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I'm sure there must be nicer properties in the Thamel area. This one disappoints. One last thing, I gave them postcards to be mailed out and the front desk agent, who spoke perfect English, stated that she would ask the mailman how much postage would be and take care of them. I asked about my postcards at check out as I expected there to be a charge for postage on my bill and there was not. She shuffled some papers on her desk and said that they must have gone out and that one of my friends must have paid for it? (I don't know anyone in Kathmandu and 3 weeks later none of my postcards have been received) I believe that the staff threw them out. SHAME ON YOU!!!

The whole team were really kind and helpful during the stay. If you want to explore thamel or near by heritage its a good choice to stay in this hotel. They provide variety of breakfast and its good, so there is something for everyone to choose. We will be back again.
Thank you.

Unfortunately we couldn't stay here as the elevator wasn't working and we needed it. The hotel staff understood our issue and helped us to initiate the refund. They also helped us with letting us know nearby hotels and get the luggage moved to a new hotel.

This is our 4th time in this hotel, as we have loved it in the past, and it has deteriorated considerably. The elevator is no longer working, which is painful for a 7 story hotel. It's also not well maintained, it's age showing. Several burnt lightbulbs, everything is old and dusty. There is also considerable noise from the street below during all hours of day and night.

Absolutely filthy hotel with a smell of cigarette smoke in the corridors. Bathroom had a leak so the floor was always wet and smelt. Thin and cheap towels. Bed did not look clean. Our rooms were not ready on arrival despite arriving well after check in time. There used to be a great hotel down the road with the same name (10 years ago) that closed, this hotel is trying to use that Hotel's reputation. Don't believe the positive reviews, it may be cheap but it's not worth staying here.

The Hotel's fancy decoration and furniture are nice. The staff at the reception are good, especially the guy who does the night shift, he is exceptional, very professional and helpful, gave us lots of advices and tips.
We didn't like at all the breakfast, it's very small and very poor quality. It's not a buffet breakfast but it's a set menu, a 4 stars hotel should have a buffet, as we have been to a 3 stars hotels and we had a buffet breakfast. The staff serving the breakfast are always trying to cut corners and save up money, they don't bring what it is meant to be served which is part of the set menu. For example they did not bring us for 2 days an apple cake, and a grilled apple, which was part of the set menu that we asked. When we realised that and we asked why they did not bring them to us, they said that normally customers don't like these kind of food so they don't bring unless people ask...So they decided for us..! that it's disgraceful for a 4 star hotel and for what we paid for. My husband ordered a pancake with fruit, and the fruit was very old and black and the taste of the pancake was awful , plus the croissant was hard as a stone. They also serve a small tiny glass of juice and if you ask for more they look at you in a strange way.
The room was nice, and the bed was comfortable. However the room was not so clean as it should be for a 4 stars hotel and for what customers paid. We found nails and hair in the bathtub and on the carpet, and a cockroach on a table.
We really think that the hotel is too expensive for the service they offer. We paid a lot of money if you consider that in Nepal you find a room for 7 dollars. We really advise to book in a hotel cheaper than this, where the service it's much better, for example Hotel Access you paid 30 dollar per night but the room is spotless and the breakfast is wonderful. I think that the Royal penguin should invest more in cleaning standards, training staff on how to provide a legendary customer service and providing enough breakfast rather than buying soft toys like tiger and penguins and crystals.

We had a friend help us. Tbh it's very chaotic and confusing. They held up a sign for our name but you'll have many cab drivers rushing to take you and they may be aggressive. Be careful with tipping. We had four people help us but only one driver, it was just his buddies who all begged for tips. We ended up giving them some money but they pushed for more. You can give them a little bit if you want but don't let them push you into it. Our friend flat out told us not to tip them at all. Don't tip the driver until you get to the royal penguin. And when you return to the airport, just have the hotel call you a taxi since it's way cheaper.
There is a pre-paid taxi stand right outside the terminal. Very efficient. It's 700 Rupees to any place in or near Thamel (where the hotel is located). Its the easiest way to get there.
Yes, Although we didn’t stay in penthouse suite I believe all the rooms are non smoking. However, if you look at their website it says they do have a smoking room in the hotel for smokers to use.
The hotels are affiliated. Yes rooms look the same. My booking was for Royal Penguin hotel. On arrival asked where the lounge and gym were to be told down the road at sister hotel, we had no time for a visit to other hotel so can offer the penguin. I give this a 3 star but thought we booked 5 star. Situated on busy road and not quiet till after midnight. Both are close to eating places. Our hot water for showering was warm. Perhaps the sister hotel is better.
