Close to one of the holiest Buddhist stupas and adjacent to a Buddhist monastery, Shambaling is nestled in the heart of Kathmandu’s Tibetan community in Boudhanath. A 10-minute walk from Boudhanath Stupa, through the narrow brick-paved lanes, Shambaling, meaning paradise garden, opens its door to the comforts of true Tibetan culture fused with high end Swiss hospitality. Spread in 35,000 square feet, your address will be a renovated early 70th Tibetan-style house. You have the luxury of choosing from the 28 meticulously designed suits deluxe and standard rooms based on the concept of Kalachakra. Shambaling exquisitely welcomes you to experience a true Tibetan home stay coupled with genuine Swiss hospitality. One of Boudha’s first guesthouses used by pilgrims from Tibet, the property dates back to early 1970's. Approximately 20 minutes from the international and domestic airport, the hotel is quietly tucked away from the busy streets and fairly close to the peaceful realms of Buddhist heritage sites. Two years in the making, the once old building now houses Shambaling, where old traditions meet modern amenities. While elegantly designed modern rooms and suites mirrors Tibetan aesthetics, every floor represents the Kalachakra elements of Earth, Fire, Water and Sky. Each room’s ceiling colour complements the custom-made curtains and cushion covers. The exclusively imported linen adds novelty to your private space. Shambaling also opens up its lush green garden, perfect for an outdoor meeting or a relaxation under the Peepal tree while gazing at the colourful prayer flags. If you are in search of some soul-searching, the meditation room might come to your rescue. Rooms and SuitesWith meticulous design and an eagle-eye detail, each of the hotel’s four floors represents the elements of Earth, Fire, Water and Sky. While white ceilings combined with white curtains and linen gives you the impression of being under a cloudy sky on the first floor, you transcend to the second floor to experience the warmth of red fire. As you climb further, the rooms welcome you with the exquisiteness of blue water on the third level and yellow hue representing earth on the fourth floor. You can choose between Shambaling standard rooms, the monastery-facing or the garden-facing deluxe rooms, or one of the exclusive suites, all equipped to ensure your comfort, luxury and privacy. All rooms while retaining a taste of authentic Tibetan aesthetic are equipped with modern facilities, including suave bathroom, spacious closet and a mini bar. Whether you are in the mood for fine dining or a casual lunch, Shambaling offers you appetizing delicacies for your gastronomic delight. The Lungta Restaurant is a multi-cuisine fine dining restaurant with a menu that caters eastern and western culinary. With an open-counter kitchen, wooden floor and fine cutlery, the restaurant gives you an invigorating dining experience. Shambaling also serves savories in its outdoor facility known as The Lingka, the Garden Restaurant. Overlooking the lush green garden space, you can dine beneath the prayer flags while gazing at the hotel’s magnificent Tibetan-style architecture. If you want to fulfill your dose of caffeine, our coffee machine La Cimbali serves the world-known Illy coffee. A wide selection of wines and single malt whiskey chosen by the owners awaits you at the Cave Bar.

Overall the hotel was very well maintained and managed. Staff is very polite and friendly. Food is excellent and biggest surprise. Rooms are very neat and tidy. Everything felt like it was managed by an experienced top tier hotel. Location is quiet yet the stupa is just 5-10 min walk.

In my travels, I’ve always wished that wherever I stay I’d be able to converse and be understood, that I’d be able to experience all the conveniences they have to offer and lastly be given a lot of choices. And I must say Shambaling is where I was able to experience this. The staffs had a good communication skill and they made sure we were very comfortable. It’s very convenient for us to walk down towards Boudhanath Stupa in the evening from the alleyway behind the hotel. They also sent one of the staff to guide the way.
Gracias Shambaling !

I have been a couple of times in this fantastic hotel at a stone throw from Bodnath stupa. Submerge yourself in the Buddhist vibe, wake up with Buddhist chanting and enjoy a great breakfast in the sunny garden. Great and friendly staff.
Their hot shower after a Nepalese legendary jeep ride or trekking is a day changer and I can definitely recommend their tasty paneer sizzzzzzler.

Already on my arrival after midnight I was warmly welcomed with a kata and a friendly Namaste by the people who work here at night. My favorite room was ready for me, a wonderful "coming home".
The employees address me by my name, which immediately establishes a personal relationship.
It's summer time, muggy and hot, and occasionally it rains heavily. It is wonderful to turn on the AC for a short time to have a pleasant temperature in the room. The whole area of the hotel is full of flowers and green plants, which make a beautiful picture in different pots.
Nowhere else would I eat salad but in the Lungta restaurant; here I trust the hygiene and enjoy the wonderful compositions, for example the salad Bellavista with tree nuts and cheese cubes. A wonderful breakfast buffet awaits in the morning, with a fine cappuccino it is always a delight.
The path from the hotel to Boudha Stupa leads along the lively Phulbari road, which is lined with small shops and restaurants. In a short time you reach Boudhanath, a place to stay or Kora run in the company of many other people.
Excursions to other interesting places in Kathmandu are organized by the helpful staff. After a trek or just so, the Sowa Spa invites you to relax. In very nice rooms and quiet atmosphere you will be pampered.
It's just nice to be here. The Shambaling Hotel is an island of tranquillity, but close to liveliness and colorful bustle when I feel like it.

+1
I've been coming to Kathmandu for 14 years and have stayed in a number of different neighborhoods around the city, however this was my first stay at Boudhanath. From the moment I arrived, the staff was extremely attentive and this became even more evident when I came down with a flu on the evening of my arrival. They bent over backward to provide me with foods I could keep down and even offered to get me medicine. Even more important, my room was exceptional: modern, spacious with separate sitting area, mini bar and fridge, separate desk, huge soft bed with beautiful linens). The wi-fi was excellent. The included breakfast (once I could eat again) was delicious and offered a varied menu. The location was a mere 10-15 minute walk from Boudhanath Stupa. And the price was perhaps a little higher than I normally pay, but affordable. Bottom line, it is the best hotel I've ever stayed at in Kathmandu and I will stay here from now on.

Relaxed and rejuvinated stay only minutes walk from a Unesco world heritage site. After a 2 week trek in what can only be described as absolute basic standard and substandards in some places this hotel was like a palace. After a long days travel in the heat and dust and traffic it was so good to arrive here. Even in the evening time the entrance was so inviting and cleverly lit so as to invite you in. The staff here are so attentive and the hotel itself is a little oasis in the heart of a very busy and dusty Kathmandu in April. I was offered a room upgrade on arrival for $15 a night and grabbed it without even looking at the room. I was not disappointed i can tell you that. Food in the reataurant and the room service was second to none and if you have allergies like me it is worth mentioning it when ordering as the menu and Nepal as a wholeis not quite familiar with most western style food allergies just yet but they can accomodate same. I went for a Himalayan Trekker spa as a treat after 2 weeks of trekking and it was simply amazing and so reasonable compared to Europe too. If i was ever back in Nepal for a short stay or even after a trek then i would have no hesitation is booking at Shambaling again. Dont book before your trek unless you plan on coming back as you will only get frustrated when you see what rooms you get when trekking🙂😄. In short, the place is an oasis in the city especially with the garden area which is rare here it seems. Staff in every area from check in to room service to restaurant to spa and aven security are nothing but polite and mannerly at all times. Well done staff, you are amazingly good at your jobs.

You need to ask the hotel directly but I am sure they can arrange it for you. They helped us organize transport to quite a few different places but I am not sure about guided tours.
We have variety of site seeing Packages depending on our guest choice. Religious package, heritage places, or historical places and combination of the other places. Please feel free to visit our website and contact us directly for further details and we will arrange a suitable package for your parents.
Have a good day!
Yes, We do serve Indian cuisine with our continental and Nepali menu. On special request from our guest, we also arrange Indian breakfast.
Rather far, actually. I recollect last October, it took over 30 minutes in normal traffic (no congestion) and about 750 Nepali Rupees for small Maruti van. No, it is not at walking distance.
Hotels in Thamel areas are aplenty, with different tarrif levels, including budget. And also are in middle of shopping areas.
We used Druk Asia for a guide in Bhutan. Our guide, Uygen Tenzin, was a great help and a fun person with whom to travel. We arranged our travel through Sonar Younten at Druk Asia. Sonam is based in Singapore, but we did see him in Bhutan.
In Kathmandu we were met at the airport by Ram Kumar Adikhari. Ram Kumar runs his own tour guide/trekking service. He is based in Kathmandu, but he does some work in Bhutan and Tibet as well. Ram Kumar was very helpful and knowledgeable. We only spent two days with him, as we were not in Kathmandu for long (one day before and one day after our travel to Bhutan). He had served as a guide for one of my friends on an earlier trip to Tibet, and he received high marks from that friend. That's how I managed to locate a small independent tour operator in Kathmandu. His phone number is 00977 98510 36 844. Send him greetings on my behalf if you contact him. He's quite flexible and will design a package to suit your needs. You can try to contact me directly (Peter P. Lolli, Greensboro, NC) if you have further questions.
