Close to one of the holiest Buddhist stupas and adjacent to a Buddhist monastery, Shambaling is nestled in the heart of Kathmandu’s Tibetan community in Boudhanath. A 10-minute walk from Boudhanath Stupa, through the narrow brick-paved lanes, Shambaling, meaning paradise garden, opens its door to the comforts of true Tibetan culture fused with high end Swiss hospitality. Spread in 35,000 square feet, your address will be a renovated early 70th Tibetan-style house. You have the luxury of choosing from the 28 meticulously designed suits deluxe and standard rooms based on the concept of Kalachakra. Shambaling exquisitely welcomes you to experience a true Tibetan home stay coupled with genuine Swiss hospitality. One of Boudha’s first guesthouses used by pilgrims from Tibet, the property dates back to early 1970's. Approximately 20 minutes from the international and domestic airport, the hotel is quietly tucked away from the busy streets and fairly close to the peaceful realms of Buddhist heritage sites. Two years in the making, the once old building now houses Shambaling, where old traditions meet modern amenities. While elegantly designed modern rooms and suites mirrors Tibetan aesthetics, every floor represents the Kalachakra elements of Earth, Fire, Water and Sky. Each room’s ceiling colour complements the custom-made curtains and cushion covers. The exclusively imported linen adds novelty to your private space. Shambaling also opens up its lush green garden, perfect for an outdoor meeting or a relaxation under the Peepal tree while gazing at the colourful prayer flags. If you are in search of some soul-searching, the meditation room might come to your rescue. Rooms and SuitesWith meticulous design and an eagle-eye detail, each of the hotel’s four floors represents the elements of Earth, Fire, Water and Sky. While white ceilings combined with white curtains and linen gives you the impression of being under a cloudy sky on the first floor, you transcend to the second floor to experience the warmth of red fire. As you climb further, the rooms welcome you with the exquisiteness of blue water on the third level and yellow hue representing earth on the fourth floor. You can choose between Shambaling standard rooms, the monastery-facing or the garden-facing deluxe rooms, or one of the exclusive suites, all equipped to ensure your comfort, luxury and privacy. All rooms while retaining a taste of authentic Tibetan aesthetic are equipped with modern facilities, including suave bathroom, spacious closet and a mini bar. This hotel took my breath away as soon as I entered it, there was a quiet peaceful calmness that it is hard to explain. The staff is very nice and greeted my friends and I with upmost respect when we arrived. The hotel room was very clean and quiet. The hotel is about 10 mins walking distance Boudhanath Stupa. The hotel also arranged for 2 cars to take us to see historical places in the city. There is also a nice restaurant in the hotel with great food. My friends and I were backpack travelers, so we really needed to do our laundry in the middle of our trip and this hotel also provided us with excellent laundry service. I liked when all my clothes came all folded and clean back from the laundry. I would highly recommend this place to anyone!

Hotel's Favorite
It was our first time staying at Shambaling hotel. We were so impressed with the service and quality of the hotel. It was way above our expectations during our 7 nights stay. Breakfast was freshly prepared , with an excellent variety of food to choose from and the staff would remember what we like even though there are so many of us eating there. The rooms were in a gorgeous design and the housekeeping was amazing. Always came back to a fresh and clean room. Hot water and shower worked perfectly. The receptionist was very welcoming and kind , and the ambience around the hotel itself was soothing and comforting after a long day touring the city. Overall , the service and quality of the hotel was stellar and I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends who visit Kathmandu. We would definitely be back to Shambaling for our next trip, no doubt. Thanks for making our holiday a most memorable one.

I loved my stay here. The staff at Shambaling Hotel are the most courteous and kindhearted I have seen in Nepal. They are top notch hospitality professionals. The rooms are comfortable, includes a mini bar, refrigerator and even a singing bowl. The garden is beautiful and immediately puts one at ease. It’s an oasis of peace, quiet and pampering. Just a 10-minute walk from the Boudhanath stupa. Also only 15 minutes from the airport, Kopan Monastery, and the Shree Pashupathi temple.

We have been coming back to Shambaling Hotel over the last 6 years and each time it does not disappoint. With each visit, we always see improvements and most heartening to see familiar hotel staff who recognize us - the warmth and genuine hospitality of the staff truly makes the difference! The hotel is situated in the Boudha Stupa area (just 10 mins by foot) and Jigme (the GM) has painstakingly created a beautiful landscaping of avocado trees, potted plants and organic herb garden - it provides a much-needed tranquility and sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the main streets in Kathmandu! The hotel is just 20 mins away from the airport - if you do arrange for an airport pick-up by the hotel, it costs around Rs 1,200. The taxi fare from the hotel to Thames costs around Rs 500. The front office team also doubles up a concierge team - small team but very efficient and most importantly very warm and genuine hospitality. From helping us with Ncell SIM purchases, birthday cake, booking taxis to get around town - the front office team does it better and faster compared to some of the 5 star international hotels. Kudos to Gelbu Sherpa, Pema, Feroz, Manoj, Rajan Dangol and Nurbu-dai. It really does make us feel at home and very well taken care of. Rooms in the hotel are well-kept with top-notch cleanliness and well-maintained. We stayed at Room 107 as always (and the staff makes it a point to allocate the room to us each time we stay there). The restaurant deserves a mention - very well run by the staff - Ram Krishna Taman. Food is delicious and chef has demonstrated that he excels in other cuisines like Italian pasta and India dishes, beyond Nepali food. Definitely worth a stop even if you are not staying at the hotel. Hats-off to Jigme (GM) for her leadership - as many of her staff are long-timers with the hotel - it certainly makes a difference when we are greeted by familiar faces by Nurbu-dai and Gelbu at the entrance each time we visit. Needless to say, we will definitely be back at the Shambaling the next time we are in Kathmandu.
