They let us leave our bike boxes there while we travelled in Nepal and everything was so safe and secure.
The rooms were big and apartment was really good for friends to share. It had a big, well equipped kitchen if you wanted to cook on your own.
The location is quiet and good location to get into town and to the airport.
Definitely recommend staying here for short and long term.
With a fantastic garden, rooftop and also an own restaurant with good menue.
The staff is very nice and friendly.
Taxi spot, groceries nearby
Mr Giri was very welcoming and extremely helpful the whole time we were there (3 nights). We had a suite of two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and living/dining room. The décor is basic international small-hotel, so no surprises there. The load shedding is part of life but each room has a solar powered light, so we didn’t need to use our torches at any time.
Mr Giri met us at the airport which was excellent because Kathmandu gave us all a major dose of culture shock. Without any bearings at all, it could easily have been overwhelming. The Hotel Melungtse is an oasis from the chaos of Kathmandu. Its location is well off the beaten track; to the north of KM in the embassy area, but there are relatively easy transport options to the city and tourist sites from here. However at about 400NP a pop each way ($5), the taxi costs added up. We took a local micro-bus a couple of times, which was an excellent travel experience in itself: 20 (good natured) people in a 12-seater bus, with dudes hanging off the sides too; stopping every 5 minutes, but eventually getting where we needed to be (well, near enough…), all for about 50c each.
There is a nearby (walking distance) western-style supermarket which is a boon to a travelling family. Mr Giri can change USD and AUD for rupees and gives a fair rate, so this is a very convenient option.
As we were there for a few nights, we were provided with 20L of bottled water with a dispenser as part of the room-rate. This was excellent as we all drank lots of water and used it for brushing teeth and coffee/tea too. I can’t stress how important it is to avoid the tap water in Kathmandu. Even the locals filter it and boil it before using it at all for anything; they all drink bottled water too as far as I can tell. I understand the urban drinking water is getting worse not better as Nepal industrialises. Mr Giri has room-service food (great option with sick kids, but a bit pricey), and also does laundry (which was expensive, but a good service).
Mr Giri arranged private cars for us too; to Thamel for dinner one evening, and also for the longer haul to Chitwan as we departed. The price was fair and represented excellent value as he knows the drivers who are very good blokes. Next time I would ensure I specifically asked for an AC van for the Chitwan route as the default option is no AC in Nepal (all the dust must wreck the filters). Not anyones fault: just me not being aware of the issue.
Hotel Melungtse would be a top pick for a travelling family or anyone with business in the northern part of KM, in the embassy district. For a short stay or if you are travelling alone or only with a partner, you’d probably be better off closer to Thamel to avoid the transport issue and to be closer to the noisy action.
Mr Giri the owner and the stuff at Hotel Melungtse offer fantastic service, A wonderful place to stay in Kathmandu.
