Having been visiting Kampala regularly for 12 years, this is the best hotel I have stayed in. Very reasonably priced. Fabulous big rooms with good facilities. It is well situated and within walking distance of the centre of town but is remarkably quiet. It was so good that I went back the next week.

I've been coming to Uganda for many years. Before a major Commonwealth conference held in Kampala in 2007, hotel choices were limited and often expensive. Hotels built for Chogm increased supply and Kampala has always had a range of price options since. Formerly MacKinnon suites, the Xanadu offers all suite rooms which are large, largely functioning bathrooms and an ok breakfast. At a very good price if you shop around.

The hotel is well-located for offices and business, the rooms are clean and spacious, and the staff mostly friendly. Unlike other guests, I found my room to be very quiet and peaceful. It's all OK. At the moment the hotel ranks average. But it could be much, much better with a little thought and care. So many things need improvement before it becomes a quality experience. I guess the main selling point is that the rooms are all suites, with separate bedroom, bathroom and living room/kitchenette. The room was fine - spacious and clean. The bed was very comfortable. The air con was good and quiet. But no air con in the main room, and no ventilation or window in the bathroom (there appeared to be an extraction fan, but it didn't work). And no shower curtain on the over-bath shower. The result - a mouldy, damp smell most of the time. Meanwhile the overpowering air freshener sprayed around the main room by the cleaners each day was almost choking, and required open windows to get rid of the horrible smell! One of the 'features' of the hotel is a large glassed-in atrium type ground floor dining space. It could be spectacular. But the glass is cracked, dirty and in places held together with tape. It is rather terrifying, as you sit under it and wonder whether the whole thing is going to collapse around you. When it rains, water comes through the roof in both the atrium and the meeting rooms, and floods the place. Everywhere is very dark - absurdly so. It's cifficult to see anything at night in the restaurant/atrium, corridorsIt seems that the hotel is reluctant to turn on the lights in the public spaces. Breakfast is a bit mediocre, Basically lots of stodge, starch and grease, with a small selection of watered-down juices and rather past its best fruit. And some fairly inedible pastries. Butter is on demand only! But a lovely egg chef, who was charming and cheery every day. And a choice of 'real' (although also rather watered-down) coffee - expresso, cappuccino, etc. I feel that right now I probably would choose another more comfortable hotel next time, for the same price. With a bit more care and thought invested in improving the Xanadu/ Mackinnon Suites I might return
