During my stay I found the professionalism, courtesy and willingness to assist of the staff, to be exceptional. Amenities provided were outstanding given COVID-19 restrictions and ongoing construction. Nothing was intrusive nor did it impede on the general relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. Meals are of an excellent standard and proportions are realistic not extravagant. You won't go hungry and the weekend brunch is highly recommended. Cleanliness is a prerequisite and the standard achieved maintained during my stay was exceptional. The housekeeping staff specifically and the staff in general are to be commended. I highly recommend a stay here for peace/solitude, couples retreat, family and or work related activities.

Hotel's Favorite
We recently enjoyed an incredible stay at The Retreat. A member of our party had broken their leg while hiking in the mountains and we received incredible support from the co-owner Alissa and the whole staff including whisking us right to our room which had been specifically modified to meet our needs before our arrival. We were not your typical guests and needed almost 24/7 assistance with one thing or another and the staff delivered for us every time. But that’s just the start. The setting for the hotel is magnificent and is nestled in one of the beautiful hills of Kigali. The rooms and facilities are understated but yet elegant. The pool is beautiful and serene. And we can’t say enough about the food which combined local ingredients and regional cuisine to deliver some of the best dishes we have experienced anywhere in our travels. Thanks you The Retreat for a stay we will always remember.

Extremely clean, comfortable with excellent service. Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the friendly reception staff Giselle, she made our stay more interesting with her advice & tips about the facilities on-premises. Would definitely recommend this hotel to everybody! It's a true sample of excellent hospitality. Thank you again Giselle for going just that little step extra for the guests!!! #HomeAwayfromHome

This was our first stay at The Retreat and we loved it! The rooms are beautifully designed. We especially loved the option for an outdoor shower on the back terrace. The breakfast is also excellent. Be sure to take advantage of the spa services. Flora is an excellent masseuse. All COVID-19 hygiene practices were followed and we felt very safe. Highly recommended!

I am surprised at how many great reviews this place has received and wonder how it was possible that our experience at this hotel was so different. To set the stage, the hotel is located in a beautiful city. It actually feels that the hotel was made in what used to be a residence. In my opinion, this is a huge compliment for a boutique property, because it feels like one is staying in a very nice house, rather than a cookie cutter hotel. The food was delicious and the reception staff were very attentive and on top of their game. The major downfall of this hotel lies in its appallingly poor service beyond the reception. Having traveled extensively around Africa and beyond, we are very understanding of differences in the caliber of service at various places. However, when it comes to hospitality, there are certain basics that are followed everywhere. The service at this hotel was extremely slow. Initially, we ignored minor slip ups, because we were on vacation and were there to have a good time. However, issues continued to arise and the poor service left us with a huge sense of disappointment that we had made the wrong choice and wasted our money by staying here. Several examples come to mind - the restaurant staff had to be asked multiple times for the same things, with long waits in between - whether it was a menu or a drink or insect repellant. Meanwhile, several staff members were to be seen idling around the bar area, socializing with each other and on their cell phones. When the staff was asked multiple times for the same thing, they would get visibly huffy with us for being persistent in our queries. Items at the breakfast buffet were often mislabeled, but even more annoying was that there were never enough serving utensils and crockery set out, and whenever we asked for these items it took ages for them to be brought out. This was especially problematic in the morning, because we were on a schedule. The most egregious of all was that the bartender, while making a drink, actually tasted the drink with a spoon, and then used the same spoon to stir the drink before serving it to us. When we simply and politely declined to take the drink, she began arguing with us. This was the straw that broke the camel's back. We were compelled to speak to the owner of the hotel, who was very apologetic and generous in her handling of the situation. She went out of her way to make amends, which we were very appreciative of, however the whole experience left us with a bad taste. Since we had such an unexpectedly poor experience at a place that we so looked forward to visiting, we wondered - was this just an isolated fiasco? In speaking to a few other friendly guests with whom we developed a camaraderie, we found that their experiences at the hotel were similar to ours. I'd like to thank the owners for their generosity and thoughtfulness in trying to rectify the situation. But a guest should not have to overlook even minor issues when paying for a service.

Response from Alissa Ruxin, Owner at The Retreat

As per our response to your sister who shared a very similar review a few weeks ago, I will reiterate our response here: I am glad you found some of our staff to be exceptional, this is what we are known for and we are delighted to hear that you departed with this impression. For 15 years, we have been training Rwandans in hospitality skills and have trained over 1,000 people to date. Our mission since the beginning has been to employ and train as many Rwandans as possible contributing to the economic development of the country. Several other guests were so horrified by the manner in which you spoke to our staff, they wrote us directly to alert us. This has not happened once in 15 years and thus we consider your experience to be quite an anomaly. As a training facility, we do not claim to be perfect but we always take feedback seriously and strive to improve. We did try to offer you some lovely complimentary experiences- including our popular city tour and dinner at Heaven - which you confirmed you thoroughly enjoyed.
