Am recently back from a short break over New Year at Dar Ben Gacem. It was simply great in every way but predominantly the beautiful home itself and the equally lovely staff running it. The building itself has been lovingly and elegantly restored. My room ("Tej") had a gorgeous raised bed with a seating area beneath. I loved the tiles in the bathroom. There are multiple areas throughout the building to relax, whether it's the courtyard, library, or indoor and outdoor spaces on the roof, which have nice views across the local roof tops.

Many places can look beautiful but what really makes a place special is the staff who run it. All of the young men thar were working there during my stay were friendly, kind, and always willing to help. There are no tea or coffee making facilities in the room but they offer to, or will willingly make you a pot of tea or coffee at any time. Whenever I needed a taxi or advice about the local area they always helped. What was lovely was that I genuinely believed they cared about their work, their home, and the local area. Loved my New Year stay here, thank you!

On arrival we were invited to sit in the beautiful courtyard where we were served with tea and biscuits. We stayed on three different occasions during our time in the country and experienced three of the imaginatively and traditionally furnished rooms. The staff could not have been more helpful.
Breakfast was truly exceptional and very substantial - kept us going throughout the day.
I really cannot recommend this place highly enough.

When travelling anywhere, we want a mixture of an authentic experience but also don't want to give up all our creature comforts. If this sounds like you, Dar Ben Gacem is the place to go.

It is a converted mansion in the heart of the Tunis Medina that has been lovingly restored into a boutique hotel. The staff are some of the friendliest we have ever met and were always helpful.

The Dar itself has a study stocked with fantastic books and a rooftop relaxation lounge that is perfect for summer evenings. The rooms are tastefully decorated and have all amenities you would expect in a top class hotel.

Breakfast was great, fresh and gave you a culinary tour of Tunisia - from Djerba to Sousse.

We went to a nearby 5* establishment for dinner and while it might have superficially looked nice, coming back to Dar Ben Gacem (especially with kids in tow) felt like coming back to a much more homely and welcoming environment. Highly recommend.

What a wonderful experience we had at Dar Ben Gacem. From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed by the staff. Our room was beautifully decorated in traditional Tunisian style, with stunning tilework and furniture. The entire dar (all three levels) and the rooftop have gorgeous sitting rooms and areas to relax and fully appreciate this Tunisian gem.

The included breakfast each morning is AMAZING, and it changes too. This has to be the best omelette we've ever eaten, don't miss it. The coffee is fantastic too!

We couldn't imagine staying anywhere else when visiting Tunis, and we can't wait to return. Highly recommended!!

The hotel or guest house is beautifully positioned within the Medina . The rooms are clean & have a Tunisian character with vaulted ceilings . The bed is larger than a European double but not king size. Breakfast is ample with a cheese omelette/ fruit / pain chocolate/ cheese coffee or tea. The staff couldn’t be more helpful They booked a restaurant nearby that sent a security person to guide us there & back . Nothing is too much trouble . We organised through the hotel ,a private guide , car (new vw with ac) & driver to see Tunis medina & Carthage. Pick up at the airport & drop off.Well worth the visit

My husband and I stayed at Dar Ben Gacem for two nights. It was a perfect introduction to the Medina and a wonderful start to our trip to Tunisia. The staff were truly amazing. We had the most interaction with Dali. He was incredibly warm, hospitable, knowledgable, kind, and helpful. He seemed to delight in helping visitors appreciate special places, experiences, history, architecture, and food in the Medina. His passion and enthusiasm were contagious. The rooms were beautiful, clean, and comfortable. There was temperature control which was helpful for the cold January nights. Breakfast was served in the courtyard. Everything was fresh, local, and delicious. Wi-fi reception was excellent in the courtyard, but spotty in our room due to stone walls. The staff all made us feel at home. There are so many lovely places to enjoy on the rooftop and in the courtyard. The design choices and artwork are a wonderful mix of old and new that represent the history of the Medina and also its vibrance as it continues to evolve. Highly recommend.

This traditional "dar" - with a handful of guest rooms surrounding a central courtyard - was just a fabulous place to stay. First off, its design is super charming -- the rooms have mosaics, intricate plaster design, local art, hookahs, and more. And possibly the highest ceilings of any place we've every stayed! Next, the staff is hospitable and helpful, and the daily breakfast is too generous (but a welcome treat). Third, its location is perfect, in the heart of Tunis and easy walking distance to the souks, central downtown, and local restaurants/cafes. My wife and I would easily recommend this to anyone visiting Tunis!

If you choose to stay in this eight room totally refurbished medina house in Tunis you will not be disappointed. The house has been redecorated in very good taste. The staff is very accommodating, friendly and efficient. The rooms are exquisite. The breakfast is copious and well done. Take an evening meal here if you can. I hope to return to Dar Ben-Gacem. The hotel is beautiful, comfortable, clean and well-run, and the people are incredibly gracious and helpful. I loved being so close to the best cafes and coming back to my lovely, quiet, cozy air-conditioned room. The women who prepare and serve breakfast are cheerful and kind. When I headed to the desert with a driver arranged by the hotel, the hotel proprietor called the driver after a few hours to make sure all was well with me. It was a wonderful experience in every way.

Excellent location at the periphery of Tunis medina - brightly lit walkways to the medina. Best Chappati & Malouf we had through the entire trip only around the corner from the hotel! The room is unique, comfortable and cleaned everyday. Water bottle is available on request. Breakfast - typical Tunisian hotel breakfast which is extensive. Good wifi. The only note is the rooms upstairs will need to be reached by steepish staircase . All the staff members are lovely and helpful!

Hi Catherine, There are plenty of small restaurants in the medina around Dar Ben Gacem, most only work at lunch time though; for dinner there is Dar el Jeld and Mrabet restaurants, both a few minutes walk from Dar Ben Gacem, you can also walk to Ave Bourguiba, where here are plenty of restaurants (about 20min walk) We also serve dinner and lunch upon request; our cook lives nearby, she makes traditional Tunisian food and shops for ingrédients once our guests request meals. As for the beach, there is Marsa/Sidi Bousaid beach (nothern suburbs) about 20 to 30min taxi ride (depending on traffic) or you can travel South to Hammamet which is 60Km away. hope this helps, Leila Ben Gacem
