The Friendly Gecko Guesthouse is a socially responsible hostel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We aim to offer convenient and safe accommodation for a reasonable price. Since we accommodate around 10 volunteers year round from help2kids, we consider ourselves to be more of a home than a hostel. We love to meet new people and travelers from all walks of life and share our daily experiences. Our Guest House is located a bit outside of the city center of Dar es Salaam (around 40 minutes by car) in a safe and quiet neighborhood. With our large garden and community areas we offer a convienent and relaxed place to recover after a hectic and hot day in downtown Dar es Salaam, or a nice stop before heading to Kili or Zanzibar.

I stayed at the Friendly Gecko during 2 weeks of volunteering with Help2Kids. It’s a really nice set-up and the Mama’s take good care of you. It’s an ideal place for volunteers to stay but not a 5* hotel, so the expectation has to be set correctly. For its intended purpose it’s the ideal place to stay to meet fellow volunteers, have access to the right type of support and act as a base for volunteer work.

We had the extreme pleasure of staying at The Friendly Gecko. Everyone was kind, and welcoming. Our room was clean and lovely, perfect after a long journey. We were happy to read about the work that the Friendly Gecko does with the community, and would have liked to have stayed longer. I highly recommend!

House/hotel where you will meet young volunteers who are working with kids. We enjoyed it very much, talking with them and sharing experiences. It is a safe place to stay and close to the beach. Meals are good but simple and there is no menu to choose from.

I stayed at the Friendly Gecko for 2 weeks during my volunteering job in February 2017. I had a single-room with in-room bath, AC, fan and big closet. It was nothing super fancy but really comfy, but more importantly it was my "home" for 2 weeks and it really felt like this. Due to Leila, the Mamas, guards etc. which very always super friendly, supportive and fun to be around with. The food was basic but really good. They take good care of you! I can highly recommend....

The friendly Gecko is a beautiful and nice guesthouse. The people are amazing! I got up way too late but they saved up a very yummy breakfast for me stlil. It is a great place to meet young people to exchange stories and experiences with - I met absolutely amazing people who I am still in touch with. The staff is absolutely lovely! The only critic I have is that to me personally it seems quite expensive for a backpackers. However, all over I can really recommend it! Especially to young open-minded people :)

Friendly Gecko is very friendly and very clean. After 2 days of air flights, this was a great place to recover. I stayed two days on my arrival and nice to just hang out, talk with interesting young people from all over, and show up for meals. There are beaches nearby and excursions that can be done from here- I went to Mwenges Carver's Market and Village Museum, Kanduchi Ruins, Tinga Tinga painting place and Wonder Workshop (very hard to find). One day I hired a taxi and one day a bjudge (?sp/tuk/tuk). Since the Gecko is on the outskirts of Dar, it feels safe and small townish. I also stayed two days before my return flight to California. The manager is very knowledgeable about the area. Great place to stay while on my own (50 + yr old female).

I lived in this fabulous guesthouse for two months and I really loved the mixture of hostel and home feeling. During this two months I was working as a volunteer for the NGO Help2Kids. It was wonderful that also other volunteers stayed at the Friendly Gecko Hostel. There are always interesting people around with whom one can talk about diverse topics or party during the weekends. I stayed in a private room with an own bathroom. My bed was super confortable, quite big and equipped with a mosquito net. The whole house is covered with WiFi. Moreover, there is a laptop which can be used on request. My highlight was the "Breezy Terrace", a small but utmostly lovely balcony furnished with cosy seats. The amazing thing about this balcony is the pleasant refreshing breeze coming from the Indian Ocean. The food which was served was absolutely authentic, tasty and healthy. Juliette and Gracy do a thoroughly fantastic job as local chefs. In case one needs to get some more information on Dar Es Salaam or has other inquiries, Jessica, the hostel manager is always on hand to help. The location of the guesthouse is excellent. The beach is reachable within 20 minutes of walk and a bajaji ride takes about 30 minutes to the city centre "Posta". I would strongly suggest the Friendly Gecko Hostel to everyone who enjoys meeting people from allover the world, staying in a secure, clean and authentic accommodation and loves supporting a company who campaigns for social justice.

The Friendly Gecko is a clean, comfortable and peaceful retreat from the chaotic hustle and bustle of Dar es Salaam. It's located outside the city center in Africana and the friendly staff helped make it a good introduction to both Dar es Salaam and my first solo travel experience in Africa. I arrived and immediately felt the laid back and amicable vibe of the guests, as well as the guesthouse manager, Jess. I was fortunate to meet other travelers at the Friendly Gecko since it does, as mentioned in other reviews, cater to volunteers who are staying there for extended periods of time. Although all of the volunteers were welcoming and courteous, it's a slightly more insular community that's not as receptive to random travelers passing through as they are to other volunteers. As a result, it can be harder to connect with those who have been living in Tanzania for several months versus a traveler like me who's only spending 3-4 nights. Nevertheless, the dorm rooms were clean, the dinners from Juliet were fresh & delicious, and it was great to have free bikes to use to head to the local beaches. And again, I'll shout out Jess for offering excellent suggestions on places to visit in the area and also providing tips from her own travel experiences to other places in Tanzania. The other staff members were super friendly too. Overall, I'd recommend the Friendly Gecko to anyone starting off a solo journey in Tanzania looking for a warm starting point on a long adventure.

We truly appreciate such positive feedback! We are also happy to hear that you were well taken care of and the Gecko met your standards. As the house does become a home for many volunteers, it is true that the excitement of Dar becomes a routine, but hopefully all are still friendly :)

Thanks to Jessica and Juliet for the great stay. You guys provided valuable info about the immediate area and helped us get to experience some amazing sites, sounds in a very short space of time. Accommodation was perfect, the kitchen facilities and dinner provided by Juliet was amazing. If you are staying here, you have access to - Kunduchi fishing village, definitely do this.. - Mbudya Island, is also well worth the visit, but don't get caught up on the beach, take a walk to the isolated beach no one visits and walk back around the Southern part. - Mwenga market is a must Thanks for all the help while we were there.
