Located in the medina of Marrakech close to the soukhs and bustling Jemaa-el-Fna square, Riad el Mezouar is a tranquil and unexpected hideaway. The villa was constructed in the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries by the royal household for one of their important members of staff who was called the Mezouar, or head of royal protocol at that time, which explains its graceful and subtly grand architecture. Now a Maison d'Hotes, the riad offers 5 spacious en-suite rooms situated around the courtyard pool or on the first floor gallery level. Depending on the season, breakfast is served on the roof terrace, around the pool in the shady courtyard, the fireside winter salon or in the guest rooms. Dinner is available on request, prepared by a Moroccan cook. The aquamarine pool and rose fountain surrounded by flowers and mature trees provide a sanctuary for birds and offer shade during the heat of the day. From the roof terrace there are splendid views of the snow-covered Atlas mountains.

The Riad El Mezour is a stunning oasis of tranquil, stylish charm that contrasts with the bustling energy and vibrant exuberence of its city surroundings. Located in the heart of the historic Medina, the Riad is a short walk from the Jemaa el-Fna (the main market square) and traditional Souk markets trading a staggering array of souvenirs, gifts, street food and local produce. The design and interior decor of the El Mezour oozes class, elegance and tasteful sophistication. Romaine (the utterly delightful owner and host) has combined traditional Morrocan furnishings with chic modern touches to create an exquisite and relaxing atmosphere that reflects and mirrors her unique style and attention to detail; the result is truly dazzling. We stayed in the first floor Zeitoun Junior Suite with its impressive panoramic views of the entire Riad and central pool. Spotlessly clean and beautifully appointed, the bed was as comfortable as anyone could wish for and the en-suite bathroom a functional work of art - it was (is) magnificent. We enjoyed several bracing and arresting episodes in the pool which reminded us we were alive and provided much light relief for the other residents and Riad cats (more of them later). The roof terrace with its views of the Atlas mountains is the perfect location for breakfast - oh how we looked forward to our daily breakfast - delicious in every way. Fresh fruit salad and yoghort, egg based main course and pancakes to follow with as much coffee and tea as you want all prepared and served by the most polite, demur, co-operative and friendly local Moroccan staff that you would ever wish to encounter. There is little more to say other than this. The real triumph of this Riad is that despite all the sophistication I have never felt so relaxed and at home in a 'hotel' environment. This is due entirely to Romaine and her vision for how a Riad (hotel) should and can work. The absence of homogenous 'corporate' products, the relatively small number of rooms with their own individual stylish decor and atmosphere, the employment of delightful local staff employees to deliver the catering and daily cleaning functions and ..... the cats ..... I so loved those cats ..... they more than anything allowed me to relax and reminded me I was on holiday. Thank-you so much Romaine, you should be extremely proud of what you have achieved with the Riad El Mezouar, an absolute triumph. I'll be back. p.s. it's great value for money ....

This is my second time visiting the Riad. First was nigh on 6 years ago when Romaine had recently bought. El Mezouar and was in the process of refurbishing the establishment. Today its stylish and understated charm is a feast to the eye. Hidden alcoves and recesses beckon you in with the ultra comfortable seating arrangements. The interior design of my bedroom and en-suite bathroom were harmoniously luxurious and most importantly the bed was ultra comfortable. The staff were professional, friendly and extremely helpful. The delicious breakfast started my day with a smile. I counted 10 different fruits in the freshly made fruit salad and that was just the starter The meal was a blissful fusion of Middle Eastern and western fayre. Finally the beautiful house cats, impervious of anyone, keep their distance but quietly watch with with amused detachment aware that theirs is the best home in Marrakesh

At last having re-booked my flight for the fourth time (due to COVID) i made it back to Marrakech and the beautiful haven that is Riad El Mezouar. It shouldn't have surprised me that Romaine, its warm, charming, ever-attentive owner, had used the pandemic to further refine the tranquillity and elegance which she's created within the walls of El Mezouar. Once again, I was struck by her respect for local culture and the way in which berber design permeates each of the salons/rooms all with their own unique, luxurious style. After some deliberation I chose to stay in Yasmin a ground floor room exuding calm which was wonderfully cool despite soaring temperatures. It's fabulous wooden doors swing open onto the courtyard, a fountain strewn with petals and the tantalising pool which shimmers day and night. I can't resist the invitation to take a dip, look up at the sky and enjoy being back in this place to dream ...

This was a late winter escape from endless lockdowns and greyness in London which we had had to postpone twice from November and December last year due to Covid. We knew we were coming to a wonderful retreat as I have stayed here several times before. But it was particularly sweet this time. Romaine has spent the last two years of restrictions refining her glorious old riad and it was looking magnificent in the warm spring sunshine. Her warm welcome and hospitality were brilliant as ever. The rooms are really superb and I slept wonderfully every night. The streets of Marrakech have also become even more sophisticated with lovely things to browse in the souks and shops and excellent food in numerous restaurants and cafes. We had a really lovely holiday and will I am sure be back again soon. Thankyou to Romaine and her charming staff who are so helpful and welcoming.

The hostess Romaine is one of the most gracious hostesses we have ever met. As soon as we arrived we felt at home and comfortable in her beautiful riad. The interior of her place was amongst one of the most stylish in an understated way, combining modern and classical interior. Overall looked like it was straight out of an interior design magazine, very aesthetically pleasing. Her staff were discrete and lovely, constantly paying attention to the smallest of details to ensure our stay was of the highest quality and enjoyment. The terrace was stunning and a great sun spot amongst the plants. The pool was fantastic for a quick dip when it got too hot. Romaine gave us many brilliant recommendations for restaurants and places to visit, which completely exceeded our expectations and made our visit to Marrakech all the more enjoyable. Overall, a very special experience which I will treasure forever, we have already planned our next trip back as we loved it so much!

I have had the pleasure of staying in Riad El Mezouar twice during the pandemic: once over Christmas/New Year 2020 - 2021 and again in June 2021. During both visits, the Riad provided a safe haven from the COVID storm we were all living through! The Riad itself is a model of cleanliness for the entire place which include masks, gel and social distancing. I felt safe and looked after during both of my visits. Over the years since the Riad opened, I have stayed there many times, so I have noticed that the place is consistently being updated, always with an eye for the safety and comfort of the guests. In tandem, the attention to food (delicious!) and the needs of guests is such a huge plus! The terrace now has mature plants, which offers a quiet refuge from the thrum of life outside. I can't wait to return!

In all languages the Riad El Mezouar just gets better and better. This was my third visit in 5 years. From delicious breakfasts on the terrace to dinners in the salon in front of the fireplace, Romaine Lancaster's care and hospitably made my recent stay memorable. Concerning COVID: From the moment I arrived she and her staff took the necessary sanitary precautions and protections seriously, which was a huge relief to me. Truly a restful stay with all the trimmings throughout the recent holidays and respite from these turbulent times we are all living through.

The owner Romaine has a lot to do with making our stay so enjoyable. Besides her wonderful engaging personality she pointed us in the direction of locales, restaurants, sites, etc that would interest us. Her Riad is beyond amazing and tranquil after a busy day in the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. Delightful food, drinks, and lively conversation. Romaine has made her surroundings an Oasis in the desert with decor that your eyes will drink up and savor for years to come.

Friends who had stayed here the previous year for a special birthday celebration, highly recommended Riad El Mezouar to us and we're glad they did. This is a stunning retreat in the hustle and bustle of the medina. Romaine, the owner, has created the most tranquil haven, where service is exemplary and the finer details taken care of - delicious brunch, drinks by the fire, dinner indoors overlooking the pool, a hot water bottle in your bed and the most exquisite bedroom suite. It was a such a special way to end our travels in Morocco.

A beautiful riad in a convenient location for seeing some interesting parts of the city. We walked everywhere but it’s easy to get a taxi from nearby as well. Romaine and another of her charming guests welcomed us warmly and we had a delicious meal and lovely conversation the night we arrived which happened to be Christmas Eve. A very pleasant start to our few days of holiday! A word of thanks must go to the wonderful staff. Ismaeel, Mustafa, Khadija and her colleague whose name I didn’t catch, all looked after us perfectly and the food in particular was extraordinarily good. Brunch on the terrace each day was so generous that we didn’t need lunches. If you feel like eating in one night I heartily recommend it! Booking direct secures a discount so well worth seeking out the website and emailing Romaine. If we are ever back in Marrakech we would definitely be staying back here and I’ll be recommending it to anyone who asks me where to stay!
