My second trip to Morocco, and first stay at Les Deux Tours, was truly wonderful and everything I sought from it: a tranquil escape with little to fault. Arrival and hotel-arranged transfers were seamless, despite my worrying that the driver would leave the airport without me owing to the epic queue at immigration control. Located a short drive from the centre of Marrakech, in the hotel-ridden (but nonetheless exclusive) Palmerie, Les Deux Tours strikes a nice balance between proximity to the hustle and bustle and rural tranquillity. Citrus trees and ponds stuffed with turtles fill the gaps between pockets of accommodation that are broadly each their own 'Riad'. I had the pleasure of one of (perhaps the only) single-occupancy rooms for my solo trip. Perched over a path, my room was its own completely detached residence. A small pool, shared with the other couple rooms in my Riad, provided more aesthetic appeal than anything else: my short dip after a gym session (clothed - sorry!) revealed it was both freezing cold (March) and heavily chemicalled. The absence of any handrail by the slope that led to my room - initially a quaint and satisfying confirmation that we were outwith the reaches of British building safety standards - was heavily missed by a cold, wet guest who was rapidly regretting not getting a towel before my short foray into the water. Sadly of course the hotel cannot account for my stupidity... More successful swims were had in the hotel's piece de resistance 'main' pool. Bath-water warm and rarely even a little bit busy, time spent in its clear blue water was never wasted. Ample sun loungers, with fresh towels neatly arranged on them each morning, provided a space to relax and read a book or enjoy a drink from the pool bar. A small watery den creates its own unique space from where one can watch birds playing in the overhanging tree, a real contender for the single best spot to exist in the world. Those who left the pool as the sun set and temperature dropped (...everyone) missed out on profiting from what became inky-black water reflecting shimmering jewels in the Moroccan night sky. Food was broadly very good, evidently thanks to French influence which permeates the hotel. I stuck largely to the traditional Moroccan dishes, which were excellent, and certainly not let down by the European offerings. I was very pleasantly surprised by the sushi bar, which I patronised several times for lunch. In spite of the hotel's location, the fish was of a high quality and dishes prepared and presented with excellence. Service was similarly good at all outlets, with multi-lingual staff who were always happy to assist and again trained for discerning French tastes. I spoke French most of the time, simply to practise, but occasionally switched to English which was handled well by the slightly bewildered staff - those who did speak English were not served any worse than the French, however, the latter making up the lion's share of guests at the hotel. The spa is a wonderful addition to a crown already heavy with jewels. Staff were skilful and friendly, and treatments not prohibitively expensive. The hammam is wonderful, though open and used only by those having treatments. Nothing is too much trouble at this hotel, with plenty of additional facilities and services that one would expect at such a place: a well-equipped gym that was almost always empty; a shuttle transfer to the city centre at no cost; room service and in-room spa treatments as desired; solid Wi-Fi; and no lack of cleanliness and care taken both within rooms and around the beautiful gardens. If you are looking for an oasis in what can often be a loud and overwhelming place, a real peaceful retreat which delivers consistently across the board, then Les Deux Tours may well be the place for you. Couples will particularly enjoy it here: though regrettably not same-sex couples, who may suffer some anxiety at the risk of a five-year prison sentence for being themselves (no fault of the hotel, of course). Solo travelers, seasoned or not, are also particularly well served.…
