Beautiful 17th century building, located in the andalous quarter of the medina of Fez, Karawan Riad offers 7 suites decorated with attention to every detail. This will never stop amazing you during all your stay. Location is convenient: in a tranquil corner of the medina, yet very easy to reach. Each room is unique, with original antique furnitures, rugs and artwork pieces, wisely blended with modern facilities. The common lounges (library and tea room) offer a great place to rest after a day of walking in the medina. The young local Chef Outhmane Choumi restaurant offers an affordable Bistro menu for lunch and more clever twist meals for dinner. There is also an traditionnal hammam (moist heat and traditionnal ritual ) and massage sessions can be booked.

This beautiful riad surpasses all others. It has been stylishly restored with spacious rooms featuring a wonderful art collection, every detail has been attended to. Our suite included 2 small private courtyards which were wonderful places to recuperate after walking the souk which is only 5 minutes walk away. The traditional hamman treatment is pure bliss. We ate in the licensed restaurant several evenings and the Mediterranean menu is excellent, Staff also provided very helpful advice on local restaurants serving traditional Moroccan food, and arranged for staff from those restaurants to collect us for dinner so that we could find them without getting lost. This riad has so beautifully restored that it featured in the 'Maison du Maroc' magazine in Sept 2016. We would not hesitate to stay again, and recommend it to anyone travelling to Fez.

Style/Design:
The style of the riad, rooms, and open spaces are gorgeous. Lots of space, beautifully decorated, and very much in modern Moroccan style. Our room was the Chergui Suite and we loved it. It was huge and tastefully decorated. The bathroom was also large and beautiful. The room included a separate living room, a deck, and an “office” space. One of the largest rooms I’ve never stayed in and well laid out.

Location:
Karawan is located in the middle of the Medina, centrally located, yet removed from the hustle and bustle. It’s tough to get around on your own but that’s why most restaurants offer a porter service and Karawan will do the same. Hiring a guide is critical around the Medina. Just make sure you know what you want and don’t want or you can end up in some tourist traps or several spots where people are showing you rug after rug and expecting you to buy.

The one issue with the location is when we arrived from Tangier, our driver called the riad to arrange a meet up and despite the driver speaking French, English, and Arabic, we still couldn’t coordinate with the manager. It wasn’t a huge issue but it certainly caused some stress at the start of our stay and it was odd that they didn’t have a better process set up (they were aware of how and where we were coming from).

Service:
The breakfast young woman server was absolutely fantastic. She was awesome. Omar was very helpful and even arranged a very light dinner at Karawan when we weren’t very hungry. Our one notch downgrade to a 4 is that the manager wasn’t very friendly and almost a sense of “I’m better with you” and smugness. It was off putting and was felt throughout the 3 night stay.

Value:
The property is stunning but with initial issues of figuring out how to get to riad and more importantly smugness from the manager, I’d say that there’s room for better value. When spending several hundred dollars per night.. in Morocco.. I expect super friendly service.

Our family was graciously greeted after a long day of traveling from Cassblanca to Fes. The rooms were decorated absolutely stunningly, each one was eclectic and unique right out of an architectural digest magazine. There were beautiful little escape spaces all over the Riad to relax from the chaos that is Fes. The staff were unbelievably kind and attentive, especially the general manager Amane, the sales manager Otmane, and Brian from the front desk. They made us feel safe and at home during our entire stay. After each day of exploring we would relax on the rooftop in the sun drinking wine. Any concerns or problems that arose they were extremely on top of and solved them to our high standards. Highly recommend staying here, it was the prettiest Riad we stayed at and we stayed a several. They truly made our Moroccan experience special and one that we we will always remember.

I had a wonderful stay at Karawan Riad & am so glad I chose it for my stay in Fes. A former palace (17thC), it is majestic & palatial, sympathetically & lavishly decorated to combine historic, local authenticity with 21stC luxury & mod cons. With just 7 suites, it is a very boutique, personalised experience, & the wonderful staff could not have been more helpful & gracious. My suite, Demani, was absolutely stunning, the decor having an African Safari feel, with animal sculptures, skins etc. It was really spacious, with a living area & writing room, in addition to the stylish bedroom & bathroom with sunken bath. The highlight of Demani Suite is its own little roof terrace, where I had breakfast & dinner on some days, quite magical, as the wraparound views are incredible. The Riad has a gastronomic restaurant & food was delicious. You can opt to dine in-room, or in one of a variety of areas of the hotel. Karawan is located in the Andalous quarter of the Medina & staff will accompany you through the winding labyrinth of alleys to your destination, & it is well placed for taxi pick ups.
I highly recommend this excellent accommodation to you, & would most definitely return.

As a couple from New York City, we stayed at the Karawan for five days in December 2019 and would come back given any opportunity we would have.

These palatial digs transport you to a time of Sultans and caravanserai, albeit lavishly updated with 21st-century whistles and bells. From here you can dip in and out of the medina with ease.

In the rooms artefacts from all over the world combine with traditional Moroccan furniture and Islamic design features in eye-popping splendor.

Super friendly and eager staff ensure your stay is a special one.

Had a terrific stay at the Karawan Riad in Fes.
Otmane, the manager, was fantastic in the pre-arrival process, arranging tours, restaurants, etc. in advance of our arrival. Our room, the Chergui Suite was immaculate and beautifully styled. We stayed at some of the nicer hotels in Morocco during our stay (Tamadot, Amanjena, Four Seasons Casablanca) and the Karawan Riad was of the same quality.

We stayed at Karawan Riad for two nights in November 2019 and would definitely come back. The rooms were beautifully appointed and quiet, and service was top-notch. We especially appreciated that Karawan had breakfast ready for us at 6:30 am when we had an early departure from Fes even though this was outside of Karawan's usual breakfast hours.

If you crave to experience the beauty and uniqueness of the ancient tradition of Fes, Karawan Riad is the place.

Karawan Riad is such an exquisite place! The service, food, décor, architecture, location , the spa with its traditional hammam, and more importantly the people, are incredible.

We were welcomed with such warmth by the Karawan Riad family.

Prior to our arrival, I have liaised with Karawan Riad Management and reservation team for a car booking from Casablanca to Fes, and then from Fez to Merzouga and Marrakech. The team immediately responded to my car arrangement. We exchanged several emails as I was trying to see how best I could organize my trip, taking that I did not have too many days at disposal. The management and the reservation team where very prompt in responding to my emails.

We were picked up timely in Casablanca by our guide, Nourdine. We spent two nights at the Riad and then we headed to Merzouga for a night and then to Marrakech. The team at Karawan Riad organized everything for us: pick ups, drop offs from/to hotels, camel ride, a night sleep in the tent, with dinner and breakfast included, in the Saharan's desert. We travelled more than 1,300 km with Nourdine throughout Morocco. Spending three days on the road with Nourdine was truly a gift. We were so fortunate to have Nourdine as our guide - a very professional, kind, patient, beautiful human being.

Our room at the Riad was beautifully designed with unique pieces: a blend of the Moroccan and French/modern fusion. From our room we could exit into a small terrace with a fountain and flowers. Such an oasis!

The Riad has a beautiful Moroccan tea room, an amazing library with unique artwork, a cozy restaurant, and serene spa, a peaceful inner courtyard and a magical terrace with magnificent view of Fes.

The food is exceptional and the people at the Riad are extremely accommodating and very courteous and professional.

Karawan Riad is truly unique and so dear to my heart! I cannot wait to go back!

Let me start by saying we didn’t book this riad but were talked into it by an independent tour company, so I take full responsibility for not doing the research prior and staying elsewhere. It’s situated in a seedy part of the old city-rubbish in alleyways as you approach - and just far enough from the Medina to make it feel like you needed an escort to venture out after dark. The restaurant food is 2 or 3 star at the most and we had a tussle with the man on the front desk about wanting a glass of wine with dinner. The only wine available to guests is a bottle or half bottle and it was suggested I take the bottle back to my room and drink it (alone?!). The website even has a price per glass but I was told they didn’t know about this.

This is not a 5 star riad, but perhaps a 3.5-4 star. The riads and Kasbahs that we stayed in prior to this were definitely 5 star so it was not just too high expectations.

As usual, the women excelled at customer service and the men were surly and entitled but this is something we have found throughout Morroco. We are learning to ask what the ratio of men to women is in the riads/hotels prior to booking as the more women there are ( particularly at front desk and in the restaurant) the more pleasant and professional the experience for tourists. The Hammam was very good.

Ah where should I begin.... Upon stepping into the hotel, we could smell the horrible odour coming from the tannery. We wanted to use the bathtub in our room for a bath. There was an issue and it needed fixing. Also the a floor tile near the bathtub was broken. We didn't know it and stepped on it. The broken tile flipped up and could have cut us. The reason given by staff was the previous guest broke it and they didn't have the time to fix it before our arrival. Well then we should have been told to be careful or just don't let guests stay in that room till it is fixed? When we told the sales manager about the issues with the bathtub and broken tile, he gave lots of excuses, that we didn't know how to use the bathtub and if we are sure the broken tile is in our room and not outside the room. Very unprofessional and the way he talked was quite condescending. I had to film the broken tile IN the room to prove that I was telling the truth. Hairdryer was also damaged. No house slippers in the room. Hotel said that they do not have a fixed menu in their restaurant. Completely understand but nobody told us the price of each meal at all! The worse situation was when my Mother asked one of their staff, Simehed, if he spoke English, to help us with a situation. He blatantly lied and said no. 2 minutes later he was speaking perfect English to another guest behind us. First of all, you never lie to your guests. Second of all, it is just a poor reflection on your hotel and you are known as a five-star hotel. After our stay, I called the hotel asking for the contact details of the General Manager as I was furious with Simehed's behaviour. The guy who answered said he didn't know his GM's contact details. How can you not know your GM's contact in a hotel?? After that, he said he was busy and had things to do and hung up on me. He continued to hang up on me two more times and after that didn't even bother picking up the phone. Karawan Riad, your hotel may have a five-star interior, but I wouldn't even give one star for your staff service. I've stayed in many hotels around the world and yours has the worst service. Very disappointing! You may want to retrain your staff or get better ones. The only person who helped us a lot during our stay there was a staff named Nezha. She was very professional and sympathetic to our distress and she deserves to be commended for it. And because of her, I decided not to give one star.

Hi ... I booked thru booking . com and found them responsive as well. I suggest trying directly through the “contact me” on their web site. TA won’t allow me to post the link on this page but it’s easy to find. Loved this hotel. Enjoy!

Dear guest, Thank you for your email. We thank you a lot to have chosen Karawan Riad for your next trip to Fez and we are happy to host you soon. Coming from the city center, you continue on the way going down to RCIF (where the Riad is located) leaving the mall "Borj Fez" and the hotel Palais Medina 5* at your right. You continue straight ahead for about 3Km till you find a big gate called Bab Jdid at your left. Then, you go through this gate taking the way going down to RCIF. Once you are on a place called Cinema Amal where red taxis station is located, you can call us and one of our collegues will meet you there to show you the parking where you can park your car (2 EUR per night) and he will escort you to the Riad. The Riad is about 200m far from this place (About 5min by walking). For anything else you need to ask, please feel free to write to this address or call us on : +212 (0) 535 63 78 78 We stay at your disposal for any further information. Best regards,

Hi brudvid, As I was myself a guest in this incredible Riad and as I was about to send friends to Karawan, so we have been on the Trip Advisor page to look for other travelers reviews. I was very surprised by the low ranking of Karawan Riad who was for me and by far the best Riad and boutique hotel I ever been. Of course we read your comment as it was the lowest rating on this specific hotel and surprisingly words were consistent with my experience that I rated 5 stars. Then I read the owner's answer and I realized that during my stay in Fez I have been repeatedly deceived by the Trip Advisor rankings while I consider it normally reliable in the others places where I have been. For example I wanted to have traditional diner so I have been to a very well ranked restaurant in a Riad on the little place near Karawan Riad and it was just average (on the contrary of a lot of look alike stellar reviews) and rooms were even worse as we ask to visit as it was in the 3 best hotel in Fez. The day after we have been to the Palais de Fez on the same place (on the Karawan manager advise) for diner and it was really great food. Everybody seems to know it, even tourists guides books. So my question is: are you only a lunatic reviewer that is messing people by mistake or are you part of this big mess? If so I have to tell you that such behaving is forbidden and therefore shall be reported to Trip Advisor for then no to fool there followers. I'm waiting for your answer before any reporting.
