My son was married in December 2020. His dream wedding had to be canceled due to the Covid pandemic, becoming instead a very small gathering of our 2 immediate families and wedding party. As the ceremony was held at a very small location nearby, I decided to stay here as I love the Amana Colonies and thought I could at least offer my son and his beautiful bride a nice place to stay on their wedding night. Also they could get some great wedding photos in Amana, especially with the new fallen snow.

Hotel Millwright was wonderful!!! The hotel is stunning and they way they maintained the historical integrity of the old Amana Woolen Mill is so appreciated. The staff were fantastic to my son and his bride. They let us take our small group family wedding photos in their beautiful lobby in front of the Christmas tree and fireplace. They even put wine and truffles in the bride and grooms suite to congratulate them. They made a HUGE difference in making a heartbreaking disappointment feel like a very special day after all. Our photos could not be more beautiful!!

Thank you, thank you Hotel Millwright. You are amazing and I would highly recommend you to anyone. Welcome to the Colonies!!!

The Hotel Millwright provides the unique experience of offering lodging, with modern amenities, inside what feels like a small museum. The renovation of this historic textile mill complex is top-notch and provided us a beautiful, clean, tranquil, and very comfortable place to stay for a romantic getaway. The location is right next to the Amana Woolen Mill (Iowa’s only remaining textile mill), and within a short walking distance of all the other local major attractions, to include dining and shopping. Dave (at the front desk) and the rest of the staff were also very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend staying at the Hotel Millwright for those that want to explore the Amana Colonies and stay a night or two.

This hotel is so unique and beautifully decorated. The lobby is SO cozy! I had two meals at The Indigo Room, and the food is very good. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of the stores and other restaurants. The rooms are big and spacious with comfortable beds and quality bed linens. The bathroom had the best shower for a hotel, along with thick towels. My only complaint is the noise. The door to your room is not soundproof. In fact, you can see daylight around the entire door when it is shut. I had noise issues all three nights I stayed there. When I went into my room for the first time on the first evening, I could clearly hear the couple talking in the next room, as well as their TV. I let the front desk know, and conveniently the couple was checking out the next day, so they blocked the room from any other guests staying in there. The second night - it sounded like dishes were crashing on the floor in the hallway outside my room from 6pm - 10pm. Third night - there was an intoxicated guest/customer that was removed by law enforcement, but I could hear her screaming in my room on the second floor while she was in the bar/lobby area on the first floor and in the opposite end of the building from me. It sounded like she was in my hallway. Sound travels throughout the hotel. Other guests could be heard opening and shutting their doors to see what was going on in the hallway as well. The incident was not the hotel's fault, but they need to do something about soundproofing the room doors. If you can hear guests walking and talking in the hallway from inside your room, that means they can also hear you in your room. Other than that, the hotel is perfect, and I highly recommend staying there. I will be returning and will still stay at the Hotel Millwright.

Great ole' place! Just right combo of modern renovation where needed balanced by antique structure, old machinery and tool displays. Nice! We stayed in a double queen room which was ultra clean and fresh smelling, had a comfy bed and HUGE shower with plenty of hot water. Bath also was well lighted for makeup and shaving. Pod coffee machine, micro, mini fridge, all usual stuff. Plenty of towels. We were there on a very slow Sunday night, after they had a very busy week, so the on-site cafe was sold out of the salmon and the chicken entrees, which we planned to have. We had instead their Hawkeye burger, which was humongous with a huge load of stuff on it for $18. We shared and each had more than plenty. The cherry filled chocolate layer cake was yummy. I can't say the same about the ham and cabbage soup. It was not as good; had sort of a 'swampy' taste. Lobby/check-in entrance is to right of main apparent driveway, which leads to the large parking area with walks to several access doors, (that require a key card after 9pm). Also, food service is closed on Mondays. Nice stay and a bargain at $122. Will be back.

The hotel is beautiful and updated. So many nooks and crannies to explore and wonder what happened back in the woolen mill days. The hotel is loaded with artifacts, but use your imagination as there is little to explain the story.

The rooms are enormous with comfy beds and pillows. The shower is large and has a rain shower head. Housekeeping replaced our towels and made the bed, but left behind used coffee cups and didn’t sweep the bathroom floor or wipe the counter in the bathroom or empty the trash. Those things are opportunities for making this hotel better. It can be noisy if the hotel is busy as the doors seem to slam closed and allow even the sound of a hair dryer to be heard.

I had high hopes for the Indigo Room for dinner and breakfast. Staffing shortages likely are to blame for the uninspired setting, melamine dishes and order at the counter service. We passed on dinner service because of the setting, and breakfast food was meh. Toast was barely warm bread, eggs were cooked at too high of heat and “Amana bacon” was so thin and underwhelming. Good tasting coffee served only in a paper cup for $4 is unacceptable for a wannabe great hotel. In her defense, the morning server was handling it all on her own for the two days we were here.

Be sure to visit the Amana Furniture store and Warped & Woven Mill Mercantile gift shop next door! Lovely items!

We were in the middle of a 14 day road trip and spent two nights here. This hotel is absolutely first class. The repurposing of this old building to the use as a hotel is amazing. It is clean, the rooms are spacious, the common areas are large and bright. Staff was friendly and helpful. Pet friendly. The area is safe and full of history. It makes you want to get out and walk. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

It is not perfect, however. As I noted, we were in the middle of an extended road trip. It is our routine to stop about the mid-point to refresh, do laundry, etc. That is the problem. There are no laundry facilities in this hotel for guest use. There is also no laundromat in any of the Amana Colonies. In fact, the nearest laundry facilities are almost 20 miles away in Iowa City or Cedar Rapids. This was an unexpected inconvenience for us.

Also, there is no portico over the entrance to the lobby of the hotel, only a very small cover. This is only a problem if you are trying to load/unload luggage in pouring rain. Ask me how I know, LOL.

In short, if we happen to be in the area again, we would not hesitate to stay here again. But not if we need to do any laundry.

We stayed at Hotel Millwright for two nights to attend our granddaughter's wedding in The Loft
From the availability to check in early to beat a winter storm to checkout, it was a smooth adventure. All staff was positive and helpful. Rooms are huge and nicely decorated. The ease of having the wedding, reception and stay all in the same location was a plus in winter conditions. Enjoy all parts of the 2 day adventure and highly recommend Hotel Millwright.

We were within walking distance of multiple antique stores, shops, restaurants, wine shops,, and a brewery in quaint Amana. Many luxury touches in the room-- for example, real coffee cups (not plastic) and Amana woolens on the bed (the hotel is part of a woolen mill). It was a wonderful experience.

The room was spacious

My husband and I stopped in Amana for overnight stay. In the past we've done bed and breakfast type places. This time we chose to try new Millwright Hotel. We loved it from the time we walked through the door. The hotel sits on Woolen Mill property. The decor is textile and industrial. Take the time to walk around hotel and look at different items. Staff at front desk were very pleasant and offered suggestions on things to do and delicious menu items. We chose to eat dinner there. The food was tasty with generous potions. Our waitress was upbeat and outgoing. Our room was very spacious and overlooked canal. The walk In shower was huge. Large screen TV. We recommend the hotel and food. It's close to everything in Amana. Lots of parking.

The hotel was once a landmark woolen mill. They now have single rooms and suites spread among several buildings. In addition there are two Covid friendly new buildings one a whiskey bar and patio and the other a brew pub and patio. The other outdoor space was set up for a wedding. The restaurant, the Indigo Room, was socially distanced and the staff followed CDC guidelines. The pecan crusted trout was excellent with garlic mashed potatoes. The room was spacious and super clean. They’ve only been open a few weeks but operations were smooth. It’s a perfect getaway for a day trip or overnighter.
