Our second trip to Utopia was better than the first. How do you top 5 star ratings? By being stranded there during the corona virus outbreak. Seven guests made the trip the week of March 14th 2020. The island closed down travel Mar 17th. The staff at Utopia could not have done a better job taking care of all our wants, needs, & desires. Paul and Chrisna kept us informed of all events impacting our return home, if and when it would happen. Paul always relayed facts and information without prejudice or false hopes. He contacted every avenue he could to provide us with up to the minute information. His advice on what to do was spot on and appreciated. The advice? Let’s conserve where we need to conserve and continue on with the island people’s best interest first, then your comfort. Last was their own personal interest. Utopia Village is there for one reason, to provide a living for the people on the island. The Avenent’s invested in Utila for personal reasons but soon discovered the hidden treasure of the wonderful people there. They decided early and began to develop a plan where Utopia Village could provide a lifestyle for residents and an event impression for tourists. If this was accomplished, all else would fall in place. They did it, it’s happening now and will be successful long term. They help the schools there and the citizens of surrounding cities. They teach environment stewardship, personnel health and show compassion by example. This is just a few of the philanthropic services Utopia Village gives back. During this week of uncertainty (10 days actually) we saw a village of people dedicated to others, putting their best foot forward to make a memorable vacation for us tourists. Upon arrival our room was decorated with an eagle ray towel and balloons welcoming us back. Diane and I had a romantic 40th anniversary dinner to ourselves on Wednesday. We dove every day either off the boat or off the shore to conserve fuel. (Utopia offers it’s boat to Pigeon Cays emergency services). Dive master John certified our Son as an open water diver and the crew tossed a return celebration party at the driveway with signs, kazoos, and celebration. He will never forget it as long as he lives. The food was phenomenal, the great diving was valet style, (I once got scolded for carrying my own tank) and the service for food & drinks is unsurpassed. Eddie brings treats, like cookies, to the hot tub after diving each day. He sets up coffee at 5:15 am and he retires only after the last guest retires. We shared captivity with Coloradans Matt Perry and his sons Brady & Ryan. They were so gracious and enjoyable we had a blast diving, conversing and playing cards in the evening. We are still in touch with friends we made last year now we can add the Perry’s. The facilities are kept in perfect condition and always cleaned prolly thrice daily. Attention to detail is unsurpassed. The toilet paper is folded every time the crew tidies up in the guest rooms. I have never changed a roll of paper. They remove small rolls and replace fresh. Daily we get towel animals on the bed and turn down service in evening. The dining table has never repeated a decorative setting. Each day it is inventive creative and unique. The same can be said about the food. Lunch in the pool is a unexpected treat. The menu is catered to personal preference and diet needs. It’s delicious, always appealing and plentiful. When you visit Utopia Village you are supporting the people of Utila. You are getting a dive vacation of a lifetime and an opportunity to make new friends. All while experiencing great diving and the chance to “see a whale shark”. We will be back some time in the near future. Perhaps to organize a reunion with previous guests of years past. It will be the only time we have visited a place THREE times in 40 years of travel.

Your review made us smile for so many reasons - it brought back memories of what was a memorable 10 days. It was our last week with guests (turned into 10 days) before the Coronavirus shut everything down. In just a few days in early March all major sporting events were cancelled, flights were cancelled, borders were closed, and stay-at-home orders/curfews were instituted all over the world including Utila. And you were here with us on out tiny little island trying to figure out with us what it all meant. Naturally there was some extra stress as we all tried to figure out how and when you would be able to go home. But what we will remember is the attitude you and your family (and our other guests) had during this period, and your concern for and kindness towards us and our staff throughout. Luckily we were still able to dive and snorkel and laugh and have fun. We are so grateful for all of that, and for your generosity towards our staff. Thank you for the review and all your positive comments about the resort and your stay with us. It truly means a lot to us. We hope we will see you again when this has all passed.

My fiance and I have traveled to many incredible dive resorts and locations over the years, but this by far was the best experience we have ever had. My fiance also has a severe allergy to dairy products, which complicates international trips, but the Utopia Village team was phenomenal with providing him multiple options for every meal and snack! Honestly the food he had at Utopia Village surpassed most of the food he gets back in the States. The people were amazingly kind and helpful, always asking us how our stay was going and how it could be improved. Their involvement in the community is truly inspiring (you must hear the story for yourself!) and we enjoyed every moment we spent exploring the resort and island. And that's before we even mentioned the stellar diving, which was stunning. Our dive masters were knowledgeable, friendly, and a lot of fun. We even got to see wild dolphins at the end of one of our dives, thanks to our watchful boat captain! If you're looking for an amazing place to dive and make lasting memories, stop looking now (seriously.) This is your place. It is absolutely worth every penny! We cannot wait to go back!

Perfection is a term that means different things to different people. I don’t know if I’ve ever witnessed perfection, but I know I’ve witnessed the striving for perfection. Paul, Chrisna, and all the staff at Utopia Village work tirelessly to give you a perfect vacation. Whether its rest, food, drink, diving, or any other tropical desire, you will be hard pressed to find a location where the entire staff will work tirelessly to provide you with your perfect vacation. Whisper to your spouse that chocolate is your favorite desert, the next meal you have a chocolate surprise. Mention that you dream of seeing a Sea Horse, and the divemasters will spend there time locating one for you. My future son in law has a food allergy that can be a bit challenging. Yet, they provided him a menu of which I was jealous. I’ve been lucky to travel to many places. But, I’ve never found any place working so hard to please, everyone. Paul and Chrisna have a devotion to the local area and local people that is heart warming, and again, rare. The diving is wonderful. Some of the healthiest reef in the Caribbean / Gulf of Mexico region. Again, the staff strives to give you the dive experience you want. There’s a lot of the world to experience, and not very much time. The number of repeat customers speaks volumes for Utopia Village. This was my third trip, and if the fates allow, there will be many more. Thank you Paul and Chrisna for making memorable moments for my wife, daughter, son-in-law (to be), and me. Looking forward to seeing you again.

We struggled with our response, as we searched for the right words to best describe how thankful we are. How much we appreciate your review, your multiple visits, you bringing more of your family on this 3rd visit, your amazing kindness and generosity toward us and our staff, and how much we enjoyed spending the week with you and your family. We hope you know just how much we appreciate all of that, and how much we have enjoyed your company and friendship. Thank you for all your kind comments in your feedback. It means a lot to us. We miss you and we truly hope that we will see you again when the world returns to normal. P.S We all smiled after counting the number of stars, finally able to sleep again 😀

I have been on a lot of dive vacations all over the world and can honestly say this is my top pick! It far exceeded my already-high expectations. The resort itself is perfectly nestled into a quiet and lovely beachfront spot with everything you could ask for: lovely and quiet rooms, gorgeous open air beach-front yoga studio, wonderful and well-stocked bar (I know...yoga & bar probably sound contradictory), remarkably wonderful food and local staff attending to (and anticipating) your every need/request (they really feel like family!), and some of the best dive masters I've encountered: competent (!), professional, knowledgable, fun, caring. There is a gorgeous and healthy reef right off the dock for any diving you want to do on your own outside of the many daily dives (they even accommodated us for our pre-dawn and night dive requests!) At night, they turn on underwater lights off the dock so you can watch the lemon and nurse sharks and plethora of fish from the dock while sipping your favorite beverage. PLUS, they are only open 1/2 the year, devoting the other half to truly inspiring community work: an important reef research & restoration project, community development for creation of sanitation and education infrastructure in the local communities, and much more. The owners and staff feel like they are family and welcome their guests as the same. I really love this place. It's aptly named, and I'll be back as soon as I can!

Utopia Village is one of those rare places that has virtually a 5.0 rating on Trip Advisor, and having just returned from a week-long visit in early March we can certainly attest to the fact that this lofty score is completely justified. Utila is a small island to the east of Roatan. We flew to Roatan, then used Bay island Air Charters to hop over to Utila, a 20 minute flight. There is a ferry that makes a trip once a day from Roatan to Utila, but the timing just did not work out for us. The resort arranged for pickup from the Utila airstrip, and after a short boat ride we arrived at Utopia Village, which is a beautiful little resort on a nice sand beach, a long dock, excellent house reef, pool, hottub (welcome after diving), outside bar, yoga center, etc - their website describes the site well. What distinguishes Utopia from most other places, as noted in many other reviews, are the staff and the owners, Paul and Chrisna, both South Africans who lived in the US for many years before deciding perhaps 7 years ago that it would be a fine idea to give up their successful corporate lives and buy a run-down dive operation on Utila, neither with any diving experience! They are charming, fascinating people who are truly committed to doing what they can to help their local community, which is quite impoverished by western standards. Virtually all of the staff are locals and those wh are not have lived on the island for years. Paul and Chrisna have launched some really interesting and effective programs to help the local community of Pigeon Cay - a recycling program, work with the local school, etc. We found it so wonderful to stay at such a first-rate small resort with such a commitment to social justice. The dive operation is great - John and Anke with Elvis serving as boat captain, are experienced, careful, kind, very humorous and a joy to dive with. The coral was in great condition. We did one night dive, and most in our party did 10-12 of the 15 total dives, as we were also fond spending some time hanging around. The food was the best we have ever had at any dive resort (including Hamanasi!) and was beautifully presented. Utopia only hosts 16 guest at a time, and at most meals we ate a single long table that was decorated in creative, beautiful ways for each meal. As you might imagine, the resort attracts interesting people, and we really enjoyed getting to know our fellow travelers. Eddie, the barkeeper and all-around helper, must have some kind of 6th sense in figuring out what guests might need or be interested in. We concluded that he must be clairvoyant! The outside bar was a great place to hang out. Of the 16 people at the resort, 15 were divers. There is not much to do if you are not a diver, though you can snorkel and of course just hang out. Several us made a day trip to Roatan to visit a sloth sanctuary and this was a great visit. Check out their website, which is very well organized, and if you read just a handful of other reviews you will get a true sense of Utopia Village, Of course, you have to visit to really get a true sense of what this resort and the commitment of its owners are like. You cannot possibly be disappointed!
