We stayed at hobbies last February and had a wonderful time. Sue was an amazing host and very accommodating. The beach was awesome for our 15 month old. Location was nice and quiet. We hope to return to this amazing vacation home in the future.
This review comes 6 months after our vacation. Hobbie’s Hideaway was in a transitional period after the untimely passing of one of the owners. Unfortunately, this important information was not posted on the resort’s website when my partner was doing her research. She chose Hobbie’s Hideaway as a low key and relatively inexpensive place to relax for two weeks. Apparently she missed the part about Hobbie’s Hideaway being primarily a fishing resort. The widow was left with running the place and was off the island when we arrived for our vacation. The worst rainy season in years had just recently ended and the humidity was oppressive day and night. The beach was beautiful, but infested with biting sand fleas. After sunset the mosquitoes were out. Our apartment was comfortable to me only with the noisy window air conditioner on. The folks there went out of their way to accommodate us as best they could. We were picked us up at the airport and taken directly to a nice grocery store to stock up our apartment kitchen. We were offered rides in their SUV to wherever we wanted to go. We were also treated to a wonderful meal prepared by local cooks the evening of the owner’s return to the island. But what I truly wanted was swimming and relaxing on the beach just outside of our apartment. Neither were readily available, due to the location and voracious biting sand fleas. We could access the water only after walking across the beach to the end of a long pier, or getting a ride into town to the public beach crowded with locals and tourists. We joke about the unexpected adventures we often encounter on vacation. This one had a bit too much of the unexpected for me.…
Beautiful apartment. Wide open and spacious. Clean, quiet and a fantastic view. Everything was perfect from the time Ronald picked us up at the airport, took us to get groceries and got us all settled in to our room. He took us on a great island tour and snorkeling. Easy to get a taxi. Walking distance to Blue Island Divers and Salty Mango (great food). Sue and Ronald checked on us frequently to see if we needed anything. Sue is a wonderful hostess and we enjoyed having drinks and great conversations with her.
First off I booked thru VRBO and the description of amenities is inaccurate there is no washer/dryer. I could not leave a review there at all, like it was turned off some how, and noticed there were no other new reviews for the last 6 months. There are many pro's and con's to this property so I will list the pro's first: the view is wonderful! the bed very comfortable and kitchen worked although needed appliance upgrades as well as basic cooking utensils, there again it is a 3 star rating so not surprising. BENGAMINA was the local dog I fell in love with, she really made it easier to be gone from my dog, would have taken her home if I could! And last but certainly not least Ronald who is basically running the place, picking people up from the airport and taking us shopping at the local grocery store as well as general maintenance. Now for the cons; unfortunately I can't say much about management cause my mom always says if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all. We really didn't see much of Sue as there are health and other issues going on there that we won't go into. After reading all the old reviews this sounded like a great place to stay in its hay-day but not so much now. There was a restaurant and bar as well as snorkel tours and fishing charters. The signs are still there but you are directed to close by businesses if you inquire. This is a place that sorely needs to be sold and infused with some loving attention. Beware of Sand Fleas, not anyone's fault but get really annoying, be sure to get spray and after bite! This place is not as advertised but is a much cheaper than a resort and with a more local flavor.…
A quiet hideaway, right on the beach. Great access to the reef either swim out or kayak, lots of coral and sea life to view. A short walk, down the beach, to Blue Island Dive Shop and Salty Mango restaurant. Visited late December 2017 to early January 2018. Yes, we would go back to this location.
