We looked hard to find a place surrounded by natural beauty, with really good food, and not too expensive. We found it! They have even accommodated my gluten-free diet and my partner’s vegetarianism, deliciously! Hummingbirds buzz through, toucans visible across the river. Bring your binocs! Plus the family-style dinners have been great for connecting to people we might never have spoken to. Highly recommend.
Stayed here for a bit of relaxation aside from the usual tourist hotspots and it was brilliant. Incredibly attentive service from the manager (Manuel) and volunteer (Hilary) which allowed us to make the most out of Rio Dulce, as well as plan the rest of our trip. Family dinner & honours system for tab made us feel at home, and the dorm room (with a mix of single beds and bunk beds was cosy and well kitted-out with mozzy nets). The numerous hammocks arranged on the jetty were a perfect place to read, snooze, watch the sunset, chat and enjoy the amazing limonadas from the bar. Swimming in the river was relaxing and the jumping platform only added to the fun! They even let us rent kayaks for us to make our way to Livingston (while someone took our bags on the lancha across). All in all, we had such a lovely stay and would recommend this place to anyone looking for a few days of relaxation in the most beautiful setting!…
perfect location to enjoy rio dulce! just at the beginning of the gorge. wonderful set up, very friendly and informative staff, they do everything to make you feel welcome. take a kayak to explore the beauty of rio dulce. go up to finca tatin and hike with a local guide to tiger cave through the beautiful rainforest. then visit the thermal springs and more....
Your in the Jungle Baby and it does get better everyday. After years of research on what country I wanted to live in and months of research on places to stay even using Google Earth I found a Paradise. These staff memebers work 12-15h a day 7 days a week. Things can sometimes go wrong with that work load but not for me, afew who felt a bad about their chose long travel can make us all grumpy. First thing Communication! They clean everyday from the time they awake and if you want clean sheets, room, bathroom cleaned or a clean towel only ask. They are helpful in so many ways. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are awsome even if its veggie. Patty goes out of her way to see I get food I like and being veggie and not able to taste the meat she is spot on. No there's no wi-fi pick up a cheap sim and a small interet package in Livingston or Rio Dulce if you see me there ask to tether to mine for afew minutes. I have stayed there for about 28 days and have left to dive in Utila for a week then return. The place is so relaxing so many things to do and the staff will give your space or soialize when they can. They do serve drinks if you like. People complain about the cost of the food drinks ect. I will tell you they bring fresh supplies daily and your not paying any more than you would in town. Iv'e checked as often as I go to town for supplies of my own. Choclate, booze, snacks and tabaco and if I dont feel well they are always willing to have thier staff do it for me within reason. If your coming from Rio it can be a challange at times as at around 10 if guest are headed that way you can catch the return at 2:30 or call ahead and they can help. If not thier charge is Q90 so dont let another shuttle take advantage of you. These are good people that work long and hard for YOU. I hope you find your spot here too. Last thing Clara from Germany who drug me out on a rainy night to do the night hike the night before she left your parents would be proud of a mature young woman you have become. Without asking and knowing my disibality in my legs she would turn to flash her light and help me over some difficut obsticals along the way Thank you. Still thinking about those bamboo ubrellas our guide made for us. Come all and have a blast. One other thing. Thanks Jaime for the upgrade to help me with my legs. Your all champs. Thanks Carlos for having your nephew and Gabrial pick up snuff tabaco will in the US. Life saver.…
The second I booked this place I knew there was going to be trouble. They only provide one boat a day (they still charge you $7-8 for that). I knew I would never make that boat as it is only at 2pm. The guy was able to message me but kept telling me that only a private boat could take me there for $100. Not only did the price keep going up but he never organised the boat and twice I was forced to find somewhere else at the last minute. For around $20 you could take any boat heading for Livingstone and get dropped off as it is on the way but I think the "private" boat and the whole way of getting you there is just a shakedown. Plenty of other places to stay that are much simpler to get to and have better communication.
Extremely frustrating. After booking a month in advance, confirming 2 days before they didn't have the room we booked and sent us to finca tatin,2 girls in front of us had the same thing happen. No WiFi EVER (despite advertising) no customer service from staff who are unhelpful and unapproachable. Told us in one instance they are unable to contact the cheaper collective boat and forced us to use theirs and the next time it wasn't convenient to use theirs they easily called the collective? Mediocre food at best, and you are charged for everything including filling a water bottle. Rooms are dank and pillows are gross. We got marooned here and felt like hostages to their garbage service, and with no WiFi or information ha troubles planning the next leg of our trip. I would advise checking out hotel perdido a much cleaner, nicer setting with people who actually care. …
The roundhouse is a backpackers place at the river Rio Dulce. They also have a few bungalows. We stayed at the bungalow at the highest point - which is a quiet spot. This bungealow is good and has a special bathroom - where you can expect some small "guests"; but that is logical in these kind of areas. There are canos where you can hire. The restaurant and bar were disappointing. Only a few things of the menu were available. Breakfast was fine. In the eve they eat together. There is no wifi. When we were around there wasnt really an enjoyable atmosphere.
I stayed there three nights with my girlfriend in a double with private bathroom. The hostel is located right at the river with wonderfull views, having really nice sun decks with hammocks! The was really good and the staff very friendly. Our bathroom was an outdoor bathroom which we really liked but might not be something for everyone. We had also crabs in the bathroom which made you really feel being in nature. No worries, as soon as you come close they run away 😀 Even so the website is saying Wi-Fi is available it was not at all. No problem for us but if people would like to plan their next stop it would really annoying finding out only there. We had a fantastic stay and we absolutely recommend this hostel for people that want to be in nature!
We loved the Round House and enjoyed the communial dinner around the table at night. Excellent company of staff and other travellers. Our room was comfy and clean, bathrooms were also very good. Location is awesome, restful hammocks & beautiful swimming spot.
We had an amazing time at roundhouse. My friends and I were pleased to pretty much have the place to ourselves after semana Santa (I've heard it can get quite busy.. so it all depends when you go!) the staff were hilarious, Jaime is the bomb. He'll make sure you're having a fun time. The family style dinner is delicious, but I would recommend bringing along some snacks to eat during the day (we would get snacky and Jaime would get the shuttle to pick us up snickers hahah) but yeah, this place is in the middle of the jungle so no tiendas are close by! Good kayaking and exploring provided by the hostel. Loved it!!
