I have done a good deal of traveling in my 65 years, I honestly can't recall having had a better stay than the one myself and 3 friends had at Hickatee Cottages. The setting of these is beautiful, smack in middle of tropical forest with butterflies, squawking parrots, woodpeckers and numerous very vocal Howler Monkeys. The cottages are exceptional, well built and well kept. The food was outstanding and plentiful ( you may need to go on a diet when you get home...) But what really made this experience truly exceptional and memorable is the owner, Allison. She is an incredibly warm & charming host who goes out of her way to make sure you have everything you need to make your time in Southern Belize a great experience. When we arrived a bit late after a long day on the road a tasty local meal and cold beers were waiting. She arranged all of our breakfasts and dinners. She booked local guides for fishing and snorkeling at the Snake Cayes, and also a river tubing trip with a great Mayan guide the mountains with a stop at a local restaurant afterwards. Anything you might want to do or experience in the area she can set up because of her extensive connections throughout the area and strong ties to the local community. We had five nights at Hickatee but to do the area justice and unwind I'd suggest at least weeks stay. Although we explored a good deal; swimming in various waterfalls and rivers, visiting several Mayan villages, there was still lots more to do such as seeing cacao and butterfly farms, and getting a guide to go birdwatching. Anyway, when moved on to Caye Caulker we all felt a pang of homesickness for Hickatee the laid back life back in the jungle. My suggestion is that if you are doing the cayes and the jungle it might be wise to visit the cayes first and save the best for last. Finally, an anecdote to illustrate how well looked after by our host... Because of a snafu one of my friends was not able to get a refill for a critical medication before leaving for the trip. We scoured Punta Gorda's pharmacies for it but as feared it was not available. When Allison heard this she quickly called around Belize City and managed to locate the medication. When we dropped off our rental car both the meds and a taxi ride to the Caye Caulker water taxi was waiting. Above and beyond... P.S. - I almost titled this review, "Allison Ruined Our Vacation!!!" because she treated us so well and gave us such a wonderfully pleasant experience that the rest of our time in Belize, although good and without any unpleasantness, was by comparison a let down.

My daughter and I loved everything about this place. The cottages are cozy and clean... and the porch hammock is a great place to relax and listen to the sounds of the jungle. We used the bikes everyday to explore the area. Allison and the staff go above and beyond to make this place special and are very helpful with planning day trips/tours. It really is a little slice of heaven on earth- bumpy road and all.

I must admit I was slightly nervous about staying somewhere without A/C in this heat but the cottages are so well designed that it wasn’t an issue. The fan was ample. The best thing about Hickatee however is the fabulous welcome given by Alison and the way she looks after her guests. If ever someone was in the right business it is her. Don’t be put off by the rough road in, it’s worth it. In addition we were treated to a ‘dawn chorus’ by the local howler monkeys - what an experience!

Thank you so much for the very kind review. While it is the Belizean jungle, the earlier months in the year can offer cooler temperatures throughout the evening. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us. It was our pleasure having you here!

Hickatee is our go to place in PG. It is not really off the beaten trail but you may well think so they are located in the jungle just minutes away from downtown PG. This year we were informed that they had again upgraded the Solar power station so there is no issue with power shortages for your devices. The entire resort has hi speed internet servies as well. Each cottage has its own on demand hot water for showering. The food is great the breakfasts Ali makes all the fresh bread and muffins. The fruits are so flavourful that when you get home the local fruits seem bland. The owners are keen to help with tours having the finger on the pulse of whats hot. The property has trails to walk around to look at many species of plants birds insects. It is likely that you will be seranaded by the troop of local howler monkeys. The cottages are all unique and very pretty we have stayed here four times now and will go back again in 2021. This area of Belize is often overlooked by travlelers mainly because they are unaware of all the things you can do. There is fishing, snorkeling and scuba here for water lovers and if you hike there are the trails on the property and any number of other areas that you can go to. There is caving ruins and so many cultural things to do. Cocoa farms where you can not only learn but actually make chocolate the Mayan way. There are also ruins nearby that are virtually undiscovered. Ali and Eduardo the owners have many little hidden gems of tours you can take or do that you will have to ask about. There are butterfly farms right next door that you can visit. Hickatee caters to the traveller who is tired of the average lodge. It is truly a hidden gem we will be back again and again if you have questions please ask us we will be happy to help out

We spent 2 weeks in Belize with our first 5 nights at Hickatee Cottages. We could not have picked a better place and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. A wonderful, peaceful, and beautiful location to begin and end our days. We did not have a car during our stay - but were easily able to get into Punta Gorda via the complimentary bikes, or just walking. And the local Tide Tours company picked us up on site for scheduled tours. Breakfast in the morning, and rum punch/dinner in the evening on the porch of the main house were both extremely relaxing. Allison is a great cook for Monday night dinner -and on other nights partners with local Asha’s Culture Kitchen for delicious meals. If you stay on a Wednesday night -taking part in the local Garifuna drumming presentation is a must. There is a resident troop of Howler monkeys. Although we did not get to see them on site -we were able to hear them almost every night! Allison is a wonderful and knowledgeable host. Very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable -and able to provide whatever guidance/assistance/tips are needed in recommending sites or arranging tours in the local area. The cottages were amazingly quiet and comfortable. We stayed in the Wilby Suite and loved it. Coffee and tea delivered to your porch every morning to start the day was a lovely extra. A totally rejuvenating stay and we would love to return one day!

I just spent 10 days at Hickatee (named after an endangered turtle species). It was the perfect place to calm my soul and to write. Sounds of monkeys and birds all day while blue morpho butterflies flew by and fireflies at night. Alli accommodated every possible need with true graciousness, even scheduling a massage in my cottage! I can't recommend this place highly enough to connect with nature, explore the jungle, walk, read, write, paint etc. And a pot of french press coffee each morning delivered to my porch!

We absolutely loved our stay at Hickatee in the jungle! We spent 2 weeks in Belize, in 5 different accommodations, and this was our favourite! Allison is an amazing host with lots of local knowledge and tips! The property is alive and cabins are beautiful and you can hardly tell that it’s all completely off grid, but it’s fabulous that it is! If you’re there on a Monday night, definitely take Allison up on her home cooked meal..she is modest but her cooking is delicious.! If you’re there on a Wednesday the local drumming crew is talented and it was a fun experience! And if you have a chance to visit the butterfly ranch on a Thursday that’s another must. We got coffee delivered to our veranda every morning followed by the yummiest and freshest complimentary continental breakfast you’ll likely ever have in your life! If you plan to visit southern Belize you will not be disappointed with a stay at Hickatee Cottages!

First off, they have great customer service. The owner Ms. Allison was so kind and welcoming. She gave us a some informative background info on the Resort and also a tour. The room/cabana was so welcoming and gorgeous and although there is no ac, the fact that the cabanas are surrounded by trees somehow creates a cooling effect. I am definitely making a second trip there and I recommend it to people who are nature lovers.

I had stayed at Hickatee Cottages last year with a large group. When I decided o come back to Punta Gorda by myself to do some fishing there was no question that I would be staying here again. The owners are awesome. I felt like I was staying with friends. The grounds are slightly manicured jungle. Large trees and flowering shrubs everywhere. If you time your trip right you might get to see a large variety of orchids in bloom. It's off the grid but not rustic. The Wifi works well and if you need it, so does cell service. I stayed in "T'ree", one half of the duplex. Cabins are clean, and cozy. Bathrooms are large, with huge showers. Falling asleep on the comfortable beds listening to the crickets, frogs and rain is heaven. Lying in hammock for early evening relaxing before dinner is great too. Allison was quite helpful in coordinating rides into town and pointing out fun things to do between fishing trips. I can't say enough how well Eduardo and Allison treat their guests. As soon as I returned home I started looking at the calendar to figure out when I could come back.

Most of the grounds of Hickatee are pure jungle. Easy-to-pass jungle trails have been and you can explore all corners and feel all tarzan or jane. And don't forget to look up, because there are regular howler monkeys passing by in the treetops! Host Allison bakes the best bread and the most amazing banana muffins you can wish for. After being served your morning tea and coffee served on your porch. Hickatee Cottages was one of our finest sleeping places during our trip through Central America!
