We had an amazing stay with a once in a lifetime experience seeing a jaguar in the wild on the hunt. Great food and friendly, well-trained, and knowledgeable staff. Not only were the tour guides knowledgeable about bids, flora and fauna, but so too were the waiters, who were able to assist with bird identification.

Chan Chich was remote, the last section on dirt roads. We stopped at two security gates, where it was apparent only the resort’s drivers could pass. Ten or twenty minutes later, the car slowed and a jaguar was seen, crossing the road. We arrived at a lodge set in paradise. Beautiful landscaping, thatched cabins with vents to let through cool breezes and nature sounds, and mosquito-netted beds. Each unit had a hammock, a mosquito-net covered lounge chair, and a pair of chairs and table for those who wished to spend a quiet moment out on their cabin deck. Two pools were available for guests, protected from leaves and critters while allowing a view of outside nature. Inside, each pool had a waterfall arrangement at one end and tropical plants surrounding the edges. We rarely saw other guests in the pool, probably because so many guided tours were available. The staff and maintenance crews far outnumber the guests, but you rarely notice unless you are looking for help. You can wander on your own, though we also enjoyed interactions with friendly staff. Each guide we had was very knowledgeable, patient, and personable. We took the archeological tour of the Mayan ruins. Fascinating. The lodge sits in the flat middle ‘courtyard” and is surrounded by evidence of taller structures, huge mounds of earth, grass and trees. The protected eco-resort helps protect the ruins from future looting (we got to see where looters had dug into the mounts and structures before Chan Chich was established, even seeing evidence of color paintings on the inside walls). The University of Texas spends two months each year digging out small sites, then covering them back up to protect from further damage. We went on primarily bird tours. This protected area is so large that there are a variety of ecosystems. Other than birds flying overhead, there were few birds we did not get good views of, either in binoculars, cameras, or the spotting scope. Guides were also knowledgeable about plant, animal, and bug life. For the first time ever, I went on a night walk, the guide providing us with night lights. I was amazed by night birds, spiders, and even a snake (highly poisonous but quietly escaping into the vegetation). I may start going for more night walks in our Michigan woods to see what I can find. Food at the ledge was marvelous. Four choices at each meal allowed for restrictive or adventuresome diets. Further adjustments and substitutions were easily made. Diners could eat inside at larger tables or outside beside hummingbird feeders and beautiful flowering shrubs (I photographed two different exotic butterflies feeding off the flowers and four different hummingbirds, all without leaving my dining chair). The staff at Chan Chick were the friendliest people we’ve ever met in our travels. Each day, the cleaning staff left behind little papers with Mayan myths and legends, and I definitely brought these papers home with me. Sadly, I did not realize until halfway through our visit that they had ice cream (not always on the menus but available on request). The coconut ice cream was absolutely delicious. The chocolate ice cream was sinful, unlike any chocolate ice cream I’ve had before. The Belize people are proud of their cocoa and this ice cream shows off the difference in quality. It spoiled me for chocolate ice cream from anywhere else. My husband (a micro-brew man who makes his own) was disappointed by the corn-based local beer (ale or stout), but finally settled on a third choice, Lighthouse. We had been greeted at our arrival with ice tea made from allspice leaf, and I found that always refreshing after a long day out on trails.

First, we ditto what all others have said. For me, what a wonderful way to kick off my retirement and 70th birthday! My wife and I were mesmerized by the simple quality and exquisite luxury in the middle of a Maya town. To heck with climbing a Maya temple: Going INTO two is far better! We took full advantage of eight of the walking and riding tours while we were there. All the guides were wonderful. Although this is our first time, we expect we will come back. After all, we were there with people who had been there 8, 15, & 17 times before while we were there! In fact we were there with two on a night time tour when an owl was spotted who ended up posing for us for about 5 minutes. The two that had been there 17 times said this was the first Owl they had seen. That is but one reason to come back again: there is always more to see and enjoy. The food was delicious and the unlimited Belikin beer and Coke products were a welcome surprise. Thanks to Annabella and all the staff (from Vidal, to Christopher, to Levi,to Eli, and all the rest) for making our stay so wonderful. T & D

Magical and peaceful place in the middle of the jungle. The only sound you'll hear will come from the birds and monkeys. Staff is amazingly nice and the food was great. Thank you to Malcolm for the lovely horseback ride, memory for a lifetime.

Chan Chich is truly a magical place! We were met at the resort by Malcom, Leslie, and Annabel, the managers, and they were beating the drum and welcoming you with cool drinks and towels. My friends (Dixie and Julie) along with myself were shown to our amazing cabanas and then offered a scrumptious lunch. Every day was even better due to the outstanding staff. We did the vehicle tour of Gallon Jug, the coffee farm, Sylvester, Laguna Verde and Laguna Seca with our excellent guide, Vidal. We did two walking archaeology and nature tours with Kristopher and he is very knowledgeable. So much wildlife to see! The restaurant with Eli and the bartenders, Mikey and Emil, catered to our every request. The pool and hot tub is the perfect way to spend the afternoon. At night, there is nothing better than going to sleep with the Howler Monkeys singing to you. Truly a magical place!!
