Capt. Julian Cabral is one of Belize's top fly-fishing guides for permit, tarpon and bonefish, and as such is a great source of information about the area. Having Julian around makes fishing out of Whipray an experience you will never forget. The permit fishing is excellent and there are few places that offer better shots at this challenging fish. Several of the permit flats and tarpon lagoons are only a five minute boat ride away from the island. Bonefish go where there are white sandy flats and Julian knows where to find them to round out your Grand Slam! At the end of the day swap fishing stories around the bar while waiting for yet another epic meal in the restaurant before going to your comfy room for a great night's sleep to be up before dawn to start your new day on the crystal clear waters of Belize.

I visited Whipray in June. A few "things" must be mentioned: Weather and fishing conditions were poor. The water level was low, so the flats fishing was very bad. Julian's wife and the chef were absent due to illness and family issues. Regardless, we had a great time. I caught my Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish and got casting lessons that were the best ever. Food was simple but fantastic. Drinks, i.e. beer, were fair. Bring your own scotch. Accommodations were a bit "rustic" and the water use is dictated by rainfall (not much). Julian and his son, Julius, made the trip fun. I am convinced the fishing would be much better with a proper moon phase and some luck. I will go again. Do not, repeat, do no not, go unless you can cast 60 feet, accurately, in the wind. Julian will teach you, but don't expect it. Do not, repeat, do not, buy all the flies suggested on the site. Email Julian and find out what is "hot", then get all the stuff, line included, that he recommends. You will save $$$$!

I stayed with Bev and Julian Cabral in early January 2014. I came to Whipray to fish for Permit on foot, walking a flat and casting to sighted tailing fish. That was my goal and Julian Cabral made it all possible. With Julian’s kind help (and even one of his own flies!) I was eventually able to spot, cast, hook and land my first Permit. In addition to fantastic Permit fishing, the island also provides a tremendous amount of shots at Tarpon. The Tarpon are agressive and active on flies. I got daily hook ups. If the fishing wasnt enough, and it should be, then the food should bring you here. I have never eaten better. I sincerely appreciate Julian’s extra effort. He went beyond the call to get me on my fist Permit hook up and I cant wait to return and try to apply what he taught me at Whipray Caye. A very nice experience for me and most recomended to anyone serious about their fishing.

Whipray Caye is an idyllic small island with terrific little lodge and fishing service. Last June I spent the day with a local fishing guide trolling outside the reef off Placencia, then drop line fishing that afternoon/evening. Unfortunately, the boat motor wouldn't restart. We drifted slowly toward shore from about 23 miles out....with no cell service or radio. Around 9 pm, we acquired a cell signal and the guide called someone in Placencia. They reached Julian at Whipray. He came out, found us and towed our boat to Whipray Caye. Julian and Bev not only put us up in their lodge, the next morning, Julian repaired the boat motor, replaced water contaminated fuel, and got us going. Then Julian and Bev refused payment. Definitely the most enjoyable "stranding" one could ever experience. Great folks who are extremely friendly, kind and generous. If you are thinking of fishing the Placencia area, you cannot go wrong booking Whipray Caye Lodge!

Julian and Beverly were the best. Great food, great hosts and lots of laughs. The place to get away from it all! The variety of fish (permit, bonefish and tarpon) as well as jacks, barracuda and the delectable boxfish were found in abundance. Nobody works harder than Julian and Daniel to find fish and coach you in your fishing adventures. Great trip, We'll be back!

If you want to catch permit go to whipray caye lodge. Julian is THE permit guide. Julian and Beverly made Whipray feel like home - in Belize! After a long day of fishing an ice cold Belikin caps off the day.
