Blackbird Caye is a privately owned Island sitting on The Mesoamerican Reef System - often referred to as the "Jewel of the Caribbean" - it is the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere with a rich tapestry of vivid corals, mangrove forests, coastal wetlands, and diverse marine wildlife. Within the reef you will find Turneffe Atoll the Caye where the resort is located. Turneffe is the largest and most biologically diverse of the 3 atolls found in the Caribbean home to more than 65 species of stony coral, 350 species of mollusk, and more than 500 species of fish, manatees, dolphins and invertebrates. There are over 70 dives sites all within 10-15 minutes from the resort and 45 minutes to Lighthouse Reef where The Great Blue Hole is located. The resort is made of 17 modern cabanas facing the Caribbean Sea. The cabanas are all equipped with A/C, fans, private bathrooms, either King or Queen Beds with new comfortable bedding, private porches with chairs and swinging hammocks. Included in the price are your cabana, 3 daily meals, dive or snorkel package, complimentary transfers to the island on Wednesdays and Saturdays and use of the resort's kayaks. We are the only resort on Turneffe with an air strip making it convenient to arrive or depart any other day of the week. Our courteous and helpful staff will always make you feel at home as customer service

We've spent 10 days at Blackbird Caye Resort and we had a blast! You really feel like you're in a remote place but will all the comforts you'll need! The food is really good and the bar is a cool place to hang out and meet with other guests and the friendly staff. You don't need to be an expert diver or snorkeler to stay here. When we stayed at Blackbird Caye there were all sorts of people with different levels. Some people have never done snorkeling before and they were immediately in love with it! And other just wanted to stay on the island and relax. And if you love SCUBA Diving, then this is the place to go! The dive spots are all very close to the island and you can even go to the Blue Hole! That's a truly unique place that not many people have the chance to visit! We will definitely like to go back and hopefully see some of the staff that we ended up becoming friends with!

Arranging travel and arrival was easy and accessible; management went above and beyond to accommodate. Staff personally welcomed us to the resort for orientation and breakfast. The food is excellent, especially the dessert- with tea and coffee accessible all day. The updated cabanas are charming, clean, and very picturesque. Dives were small groups, with very experienced staff to provide trips according to interest. Very memorable, unique dives with sharks and dolphins were experienced. To dive the Blue Hole, this resort requires you to have an advanced certification. This was the only inconsistent travel communication we received when planning our trip. If you want a private, primitive adventure this is worth your while.

As you will find in many of the previous reviews, it is the staff that make this destination what it is. We have been blessed to have been guests at Blackbird Caye several times and each time is one of our most favorite vacations, allowing us to leave a piece of our heart there when we leave. Through our visits we have made lasting friendships with other guests as well as the Blackbird Team. Our visit was in early-mid March. On this trip, we stuck to snorkeling with Chris and went out twice a day. Chris, is the best snorkel guide in the business. He ensures that unique fish/creatures/coral are identified for guests that are with him. While out, he keeps a careful eye and knows where his snorkelers are at all times. If you are comfortable, he lets you wonder on your own. Do this at your own risk though, because you may not see the unique things he points out. He understands the ocean, weather patterns, current, visibility and takes all this in to consideration when choosing the snorkel spot each time. One of our favorite sayings is when we have arrived, fins and masks are on, he will say "the pool is open". The food this trip was remarkable. They had a couple of different chefs throughout our stay due to allow for time off, and we had great meals with both chefs. It is amazing what they can do in a remote location. Fresh produce at all meals. Beautiful plate presentations and quality taste! Dining room staff ensured you had everything else needed to make for a comfortable meal. Kurt and Ashanti were always there to lend a smile, say hello, and be gracious hosts during our stay. Our cabana was right on the water and steps away from dining, palapa bar, and dock. All cabanas have great locations. House keeping arrived after we left for the first snorkel of the day (9:30am) and had the room cleaned by the time we got back to the cabana. Each evening they would return while we were at dinner for turn down service. The chocolates placed on the bed is always a nice extra touch. Doctor flies were plentiful on the remote island during our stay, however, what we found most helpful is to wear lightweight long pants and long sleeve shirts. We did not encounter mosquitoes or sand fleas. However, they can be prevalent given the location and remoteness of the island. Jeorge was the bartender during our stay and he did not disappoint. Everyday at 5:30 there are snacks in the bar. People gather and share in the days events recalling the highlights of the dive and snorkel trips. Also, Jeorge makes the bar time extra special with his numerous magic tricks. We looked forward to what kind of magic he had up his sleeve each evening. Always with a smile on his face, he would say "beginner's luck". Melissa and Markus were the on-site managers. You would frequently hear Melissa say "what can I do to help". They had a very hands-on approach and appeared to have good rapport with the other staff members which helped make the entire operation run as smoothly as possible. We are already looking forward to our next return trip!

I needed a vacation to totally unwind and release my stress. Blackbird Caye Resort was exactly what I needed. The room was spacious and extremely comfortable, facing the blue sea. Just waking up to this relaxed me. I looked foreword to breakfast every morning. There was something different and inventive every day It was always delicious with fresh fruits. The staff made you feel like family, from Kurt In the kitchen who is very professionally yet personable, to Chris who made you feel supported yet independent in the water. I got to do what I really wanted to do, sit by the beach with a drink in my hand and a good book to read enjoying the sunshine.Blackbird Caye Resort is definitely the place to go for relaxation or for adventure. What ever you desire, you can find it there.

Our second visit to Blackbird Caye. So much has improved! The resort is remote and built for diving and snorkeling. Melissa and Markus are the cordial and efficient managers. Ed, Aldo, Jakob and Capt Biggie are the marvelous dive crew. They are helpful if you need anything, but will leave you alone if you want to explore on your own. If you want to hunt lionfish, they have spears and an encouraging attitude. One of the crew always seems to be around the dock day or night if you have questions or just want to shoot the breeze. Meals were interesting and flavorful with a most pleasant staff. The shore guys kept the beach weeds to a reasonable minimum as they were out at 6 am and worked at it on and off all day. The housekeeping staff visit twice a day. In the morning to make the beds and tidy up and then during the dinner hour to close the curtains and turn down your bed. The new Cabanas are very comfortable and I recommend you try them, they are worth it! If you want to dive the Blue Hole you MUST have your advanced certification. Nitrox is 32%. Get George in the bar to show you some card tricks. There are fish and coral books available in the bar and office for use to settle arguments over a beer. We went as a family ages 65,63,30 and 27. 3 divers and 1 snorkeler. All enjoyed the experiences and antics of the crew and guests. For those folks who have been to Blackbird in the past, let's get some new folks to visit! I unqualifiedly recommend the resort as a diving and snorkeling haven for young and old.
