If you are looking for an amazing diving experience, this is a definitively place to go. Reef and aquatic wildlife are spectacular! Staff was super nice and very accommodating. Please keep in mind that it is quite remote place, do not expect all the luxuries associated with coastal resorts. They do not have a chlorine filled swimming pool, top speed internet, sanitized beaches or a full time bartender. You will be at an amazing location surrounded by nature with all its elements.

We just returned from Lighthouse Reef Atoll, where I took 12 university marine biology students for an 11 day experience in coral reef habitats and fisheries. Itza Resort was our home for this trip. Elvis - resort manager / dive leader / fishing guide / fly-tying teacher / naturalist and historian - and his staff did an incredible job at making this one of the very best field trips I've made over my 30 year career of taking students to wild locations. First - the region - the resort is on a beautiful island on Lighthouse Reef Atoll, 50 miles off the coast of Belize. Another small dive lodge and a few houses contain the only other human inabitants of the whole atoll. Superb reefs and dive sites are all within a few minute boat ride - we saw lots of sharks, groupers, snappers and dense populations of diverse colorful reef fishes. Great corals, none showing signs of the diseases that are hammering some other Florida and Caribbean sites. And - of course - the Great Blue Hole is only 7 miles away, and well worth the dive. Flats fishing - bonefish, tarpon, permit are all over the place. The lodge - very comfortable, rustic, and a great place to relax in hammocks on the porch or under the palms. Food was excellent, and we got dinners ranging from barracuda to burgers. The staff were all very friendly, outgoing, and dedicated to making sure that we enjoyed the resort that they were so justifiably proud of. Bottom line.... if you want a wild nightlife and shopping tours, this is not for you. If you want to live and dive on a beautiful coral reef island, enjoying a tranquil but exuberant experience, check out the the Itza Resort and Lighthouse Reef Atoll.

I stayed at Itza Lodge for two weeks for a college field course, and had an amazing time! The entire staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating, especially Elvis and Wendy. Everyone here knows their snorkeling/scuba-ing/fishing and makes sure you have the best experience possible. The only drawback is the composting toilets and limited wifi, but those two factors small in comparison to the amazing experience I had.

Itza is on Long Cay, a small island with only 2 resorts. The rooms are good-sized and nice, with full baths. Each room has a balcony with a hammock overlooking the ocean and I spent my late afternoons relaxing and staring at the sky, the birds and the sea. The food was amazing, for example fresh caught grouper for dinner. The heart of Itza though is snorkeling/diving. I snorkeled and it was beyond my expectations. I went out with Elvis, the manager of the resort, who kept me entertained throughout the whole trip. He has a story for every occasion, he knows every wave around the island and his presence alone guarantees a great trip. Anyway, the Blue Hole is everything you hoped. You could spend an hour looking at a ten foot portion of coral and the dozens of fish that inhabit it. And the whole while, the blue hole looms besides you with deep blue sinking hundreds of feet. It got better when we found a pod of six dolphins and I swam and dove alongside of them. In the afternoons, I kayaked around the island. Kayaking the perimeter of a remote, essentially deserted island is a special treat. I was all alone except for tons of birds, sand rays, fish of all kinds, crabs, starfish and just nature at its best. There is a path along the beach for walks - a night walk with a flashlight is a must, at the end the path opens up and the stars surround you. I also suggest a late night pier stargaze for the full effect. The greatest vacation I ever took.
