We stayed at de Real Macaw January 2022. We moved out as soon as we could as it is quite run down. The fridge did not work and there was no coffee pot. Management was not answering their phone to help us find the room assigned to us. The screen doors block the room number from view. There was a deserted Real Macaw office a block over but it seemed like it hadn’t been used in the last few years. It appeared to us that the apartments that garnered good reviews in the past are no longer part of de Real Macaw. All that is left is quite run-down and nowhere near worth what we paid, nor worth the rating that trip advisor has given it. It should be around a 1 or 2.

Drug dealers selling cocaine and weed all day and night directly in front of the place along with pimps and sex workers. They would be across the street and leaning against the property fence. Very intimidating and aggressive. No property security. Vendors / drug dealers directly across the street fighting among each other on several occasions - on one occasion a machete was brandished. Vendors / drug dealers blaring music into the night and very early in the morning. Did not feel safe. Barbed wire across the fence did not prevent drug dealers from hanging out and leaning against fence. If you parked your golf cart in front of the property the drug dealers would sit and hang out in it eating food and selling their drugs. Rooms themselves were dirty. Towels were more like rags that came in different colours. Broken fence and gate. Minimal staff presence.

The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The location was perfect, with a view of the water! It's close to shopping, restaurants and activities. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and will do it again in the future.

I had to leave room #8 because it was infested by cockroaches! It was everywhere in the room even on the BED. I had to leave at night and find another hotel last minute. This room is unsuitable for renting to tourists and the issue should be treated. I requested a refund but the hotel refused by saying that they couldn't find cockroaches in the room. If you read previous reviews on Booking.com and here you'll see that the hotel is well aware of the issue but does not act in good faith and lie. There are way better options on this island!

Very nice staff. Clean rooms. It is very reasonably price with a great location. It is just across the street from the beach, but has their own pool. Centrally located for a stroll either direction to explore Caye Chaulker!

We arrived here after booking several weeks in advance, our room was triple booked. The owner arranged another hotel and said she would pay as it was their error. Once we arrived at the new hotel the owner of de Real Macaw 2 refused to pay leaving us homeless. Their treatment of paying guests was terrible luckily hotel China Town delivered a top class service.

Only stayed 1 night and that was enough. Yes, this is a very budget, very basic, very no-frills/cheap accommodation. Stayed in room 1. Room is located on the front of the building. “Sea view” from the front porch (the porch is a plus). The FAQ/FYI for room #1 is...directly across the road from local vendors, loud music, listening to brash comments made by vendors as people walk & guests walk by, smoke from the next door restaurant as you sit on the porch,...). Be careful when you enter the room to avoid banging into the bed (bruising, stub toe, ...). There is an A/C. A request for hairdryer and towels made. Good hairdryer. Only 1 towel per person. A/C worked fine, only a sheet on the bed. Again, you get what you pay for. The biggest complaint was...NO HOT WATER for shower or in the tiny sink. Also, remember /to NOT flush the toilet paper!!! Calls were made to number provided in the “guest book” about the LACK OF HOT WATER without reply. All I wanted was a nice, at least warm shower after riding the water taxi and walking along the beach and dirt streets.

This was our second stay at De Real Macaw. It is not a fancy hotel, but the location is great, the staff is friendly and you can't beat the price. We stayed in room #3 (the lower level of the back building) and we like it because it's tucked back off the street and the front building breaks the wind and noise. The room itself always reminds me a bit of a cabin... no frills but quaint and serves its purpose. The bathroom of this room is actually quite large and the shower has great water pressure and gets hot. The bed is a bunk bed with a twin on top and full on the bottom, which is a bit awkward, but I used the top bunk to stash all my clothes. The mattresses and pillows were not great, but I'm convinced that Belize doesn't believe in soft beds. Our room had a mini fridge and coffee maker, and they supply coffee. The girls who clean the rooms are very sweet and always quick to provide fresh towels. I spent a lot of time on the deck in one of the chairs reading; the perfect spot to get a breeze without being blown away and to hide from the heat of the day. One of the things I like most about staying here is that generally the other guests are all friendly. Everyone sits out on their decks and is quick with a hello, even if language barriers prevent much further conversation. If you are looking for budget accommodations De Real Macaw is a great option!

I rented a budget room in this small hotel. The room was clean and seemed to have been recently painted. The staff was friendly and mostly helpful. On the downside, the door to the room did not lock (the bolt was not lined up correctly) and although I pointed this out, nothing was done to try to make it lock or even close completely. I was told something to the effect of, "It's okay, it is safe here." I placed my dive bag between the door and the bed in an attempt to discourage any unwanted entry. I really do not need much beyond a clean room and a comfortable bed when travelling and although the room was clean, the bed was horrible--very worn. I have slept on carpeted floors that were more comfortable. There was a fan, but no AC, but that was not a problem. The temp was comfortable. There is a good local restaurant next door and many others nearby. There is easy access to the beach, diving and snorkeling companies, other adventures, native and other crafts. The island is small and everything is easy to get to if not by foot, then by bike or golf carts. I think the other rooms were larger and perhaps had better beds (!). #8 was very small and I would recommend only for solo adventurers on a tight budget--will be better if they change the bed to one less worn!

Couldn't adjust the A/C temperature or ceiling fan speed so the room was fairly hot. Room was very plain but clean and staff was friendly. It is centrally located near the ferry and center of town. Price was decent.
