We discovered this hotel through the Small Luxury Hotels website, and decided to do a "Rainforest and Reef" package with Matachica's "sister" resort Gaia River Lodge in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve ~2hrs inland, splitting our time at both resorts over the course of a week on a full-board meal package.

The reservation process was easy, communication from the staff was prompt and comprehensive, and the hotel was everything it was advertised to be - amazing!
You have two primary options for getting from Belize City to the resort (it is located on the east side of Ambergris Caye, which is essentially a long, narrow island) - by air or by boat. Note: The resort stay does not include these transfers.

We chose to book air travel on Tropic Air, a local carrier that has multiple daily flights using smaller Cessna Caravan prop planes. The ride was ~15 minutes from wheels up at the Belize City airport to landing at the small San Pedro Town airport. From there, your stay includes a transfer to the hotel. The resort sends a staff member to pick you up at the terminal and take you the rest of the way to the resort, either by speedboat or by van, depending on the weather. We traveled by speedboat and it was an enjoyable 15 minute boat ride with fresh air and views of the coastline.

The resort is just as advertised - small, luxury, private. It's a well-maintained property, and the staff, food, beverages and amenities aligned with that atmosphere.

We enjoyed a warm welcome and stayed in a garden cabana with A/C, a porch with swing and chair and a nice view of the garden surrounding the elevated infinity pool. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and no special request was denied.
There are two on-site restaurants (with a shared kitchen) and two on-site bars. Both are outdoors but covered/shaded. Cocktails were creative and refreshing ($16-$23/ea), the food was delicious and fresh, and desserts were spectacular (the owner's son is a pastry chef).

Resort amenities are what you'd expect from a place like this: Non-powered watersports like kayaking and paddleboarding are included, and it's only a 15 minute paddle offshore to the reef, where you can tie up your boat and snorkel to your heart's content using equipment provided by the resort. The beach area is sandy, but the water is shallow past the dock and full of sea grass. Not the best for playing in the water.

Note: Beaches in Belize are public, but there was little to no foot traffic from folks not staying at the resort. There were a couple of vendors who set up at the resort dock every day, but they were friendly and not assertive/bothersome. The hotel provided evening/overnight security staff that patrolled the property. We always felt safe.

There are several a-la-carte on-site activities throughout the week like rum tasting, Taco Tuesdays and private or group dining. There are also several offsite excursions offered like sunset powerboat cruises, snorkeling/scuba diving and mainland Mayan ruin tours. We expected more organized on-site activities like morning or sunset yoga, but these were not offered. The pool deck or the pavilion at the end of the dock would be a perfect location; we hope they add it in the future.

There is also a beautiful on-site, indoor spa that offers typical treatments and we enjoyed a 60-minute Swedish massage just before dinner. Fantastic!

The resort exuded a very chill vibe and the layout of the cabanas made it feel very private. Adults only, no kids. Just what we were looking for; we'd go back anytime. Our thanks and gratitude to the following staff:
Charlie, Lucas and Aaron at the watersports area.
Egar, Jennifer and Heidi at front desk and Operations.
Julio, Silvano and Javier for exceptional bar and restaurant service.

Matachica is a paradise untouched by time. This visit is a must for anyone looking to take a step away from the rat race and enjoy pure relaxation at its finest. The rooms are all private, the resort sits privately from others on white sand beaches. White sand pathways guide you from room to room, to the pool, to the restaurant, and to the spa. An oceanfront room is not a requirement, but we did stay in one I highly recommend it. Waking up to the sunrise and the quietly lapping water every morning gave me a peace I’m still craving since leaving.

The staff at Matachica were absolutely incredible. They truly went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. Henry toured my wife and I through a snorkeling trip at Mexico Rocks and was so patient with me as I’m not the best swimmer. He allowed time for me to catch up while still taking the time to point out amazing sea creatures and tell us more about them.

Charlie took us on an amazing fishing trip and knew all the best spots to catch reef fish. He taught us about Grunters, Porgy, and Snappers and even dressed our catch for us to enjoy at the resort restaurant. Such an amazing and friendly guide.

Chantel and Lilia gave my wife and I amazing attention at the spa. The environment was so peaceful and serene and the massages were incredibly enjoyable.

Julio, Archie, Jasmine, Nathaniel, and Sylvano(hope I spelled it right) took care of us for our meals and the candlelit pier dinner we had. Each experience dining at the resort restaurant was memorable and the food was incredible!

We were four adults (family related) staying in this cozy resort, about a 30 minute ride North of San Pedro. What a pleasant surprise this placed turned out to be. We arrived by boat, though, from the local airport, which is likely a quicker route, given the roads are not in the best of condition. This resort is quite secluded, and located a good distance from the busy streets of San Pedro, but close enough to grab one of their golf carts to take into town for some local cuisine and shopping. The pictures do this place justice. It is a cozy, intimate setting that transcends you back in time to a day when laying in a hammock by the beach on your porch, or opening up the glass doors of your bungalow to let the sea-breeze blow through (screen doors are present to keep the bugs a bay). The staff is very courteous and helpful, and the food was very tasty (their deserts were the stars of their cuisine - try the keylime pie). They will deliver coffee to your bungalow at a time of your choosing, and they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner (sporting a casual restaurant on the beach, or a more refined experience in their Mambo dining room). 15% gratuity is included in their prices, but the food and beverages are not included, except for a morning continental breakfast with coffee (but we supplemented our breakfasts with egg dishes for an extra fee). They have a heliport on the property for guests who like to arrive and depart by helicopter — which we took advantage of on our departure when we flew out to see the Blue Hole and stay on the atoll, afterwards. They sport an outdoor beach bar, as well as one in doors (by indoors, I mean opened to the atmosphere, but under cover with shutters than can close off against the elements, if rain and wind set in). The experience here is unlike one would encounter at a Corporate hotel. The atmosphere is anything, but commercial, and proffers the feeling of stepping back into time. I enjoyed how quiet this place was, and with the sunrises right over the water, I couldn’t help but get up each morning to watch it from my porch with a my morning coffee. My only complaint, which is small, is that while the property maintenance was quite good and attended to, we did have an outdoor jacuzzi tub with our bungalow which didn’t work, and one of the 3 ceiling fans in our unit was showing signs of age in its motor. Hats off to the lady who cleaned our room daily, an artist who created the most amazing designs with bath towels.

Very disappointed. In rooms costing almost $1000 USD per night, you do not have bottled water but a Thermos with treated water. Ours smelled musty and we were very sick for a day. They didn't have a problem with that! In fact, the manager offered us two bottles of water as compensation
For breakfast included, at this price, you have no choice, it's continental breakfast with coffee, fruit and pastries and industrial orange juice not good, served in horrible Duralex glasses (good, it reminds us of the canteen in France!) and that's not all, the worst is to come. If for breakfast you want to add two eggs to the dish and 3 slices of bacon it will cost you the modest sum of $14 (you think it is Belize dollars which corresponds to $7 American but the scam is not far ... ) In very small and greyed out at the bottom of the first page it says that the prices indicated are in US$ but in the rest of the menu there is no mention of the currency next to the price.
The hotel is located on the waterfront but you can not swim there because the water bottom is black with many algae. Otherwise the rooms are fine (fortunately at US$1000), the staff is friendly, but you are parked like sheep away from the city center which is more than 20 minutes away. If you exit at the back of the hotel, you come across a construction road with multiple buildings under construction along the way. Far from Belize's dream in agency brochures!!!!
One positive point, a very nice snorkelling trip from 1 h 30 to 500 m from the hotel charged $ 90 per person (and of course in US$!) You have already seen in France menus with prices displayed in a foreign currency!!!

Where to begin...it's rare that a traveling experience transcends your expectations. Matachica's website does not do it justice. My husband and I stayed for 4 heavenly nights. This was our first time in Belize.

I couldn't help but feel like a main character in HBO's White Lotus series, arriving by private boat to Matachica's dock and handed a cocktail of my choice that was ordered ahead of time. By the time they handed me the aromatherapy towel for my face/neck in the lobby I was in a trance.

Matachica is an oasis for people desperately in need of rest and relaxation. (I live in a giant concrete jungle). This is not a resort but a state of mind. There is so much thought put into the lo-fi music (not cheesy!), the menus, the layout/flow of the grounds, and every detail.

The casitas are luxurious and each is named after a fruit/food. We were Mr.and Mrs. Pomegranate and I think we will forever fondly refer to each other that way. Even Matachica's dog, Taco, had a dog house resembling a casita, complete with palm tree thatched roof. My only suggestion is Taco's casita also gets a fruit symbol.

It is blissfully QUIET /PEACEFUL (thanks to the no kids policy) and feels like a dream come true for us haggard parents. It took me half a day to realize what was so different from my life back home because it was so jarring.

The staff genuinely seems to care about you enjoying yourself and being part of the Matachica team. They are very friendly and attentive.

Housekeeping was like magical elves where I never saw them, yet, I would return after dinner and the bed would be turned down and incense lit. Also, I was the lucky recipient of daily cartoon/message wishing me a good day.

We snorkeled, kayaked, fished, and rented a golf cart to explore.

Matachica is unparrelled in its service and ambiance; do not deprive yourself of this experience!

Dear Emily, Wow—what an absolutely fantastic review! We are beyond delighted to hear that your stay at Matachica exceeded your expectations and left you feeling like the main character of a dream vacation. It’s always fascinating when guests compare us to The White Lotus, and after watching the show, I totally understand why! The private boat arrival, the personalized welcome drink, and the aromatherapy towel do set the scene for an unforgettable escape—but thankfully, Matachica is all about relaxation, warmth, and genuine hospitality (no White Lotus drama here! We love that you embraced the quiet, peaceful atmosphere, found joy in the little details (Taco’s casita deserves its own fruit symbol, doesn’t it?), and enjoyed the thoughtfulness our team puts into every moment including the staff. “Mr. and Mrs. Pomegranate” has a wonderful ring to it—what a fantastic memory to take home!Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We can’t wait to welcome you back for another blissful stay in paradise.

Our stay left nothing to be desired, the location was perfect just close enough to the local town center to visit by boat or golf cart but far away enough to be secluded and private. The location was incredibly beautiful with a pristine beachfront and reefs you could visit by just kayaking out from the hotel. The individual separated rooms with their own entrance and hammocks were very private and comfortable. I felt the staff and the layout of the property made it very covid safe and I took note that the staff was thoroughly cleaning everything behind guests and always wearing their masks. The hotel also had onsite covid testing which meant we didnt have to go anywhere for the tests we needed for our flight. The food at the restaurant on the property was the best I had the entire trip there was almost no reason to go into town. Reminiscent of my best dining experiences in Michelin star restaurants in places like Paris and Tokyo everything on the menu made for unforgettable culinary delights and top trending Instagram photos. The staff were incredibly helpful, always remembered our names and preferences and set us up with incredible massages as well a schedule packed full of fun activities like snorkeling with sharks. Last but not least the drinks and cocktails at the restaurant, poolside tree bar and on the boat were all really well made and little details like fresh fruit, strong drinks and decorative elements like fruit skins quilted into little animals on the edge of the glass made these the most extravagant and delicious drinks ive had in Belize. All and all an amazing way to round off our trip which started at the sister hotel Gaia in the Belize rainforest which I would also highly suggest.

The wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in July. The property was so quiet and peaceful during our stay. No running or loud kids and the bar area didn't have annoying or typical "island" music playing.

The room was comfortable and spacious enough for the 2 of us. I really liked the insulated pitcher of ice cold water they refreshed daily. Ice does not last long in Belize, so being able to sip this in the middle of the night was great

I primarily stuck to the fruit and pastries for breakfast which were pretty good. The wife explored the menu and I "helped" whenever I could.

The pool was AMAZING! Somehow it was the perfect temperature. In the July heat, that is difficult to do because it wasn't too cold or hot.

It was the most relaxing resort I have stayed at. If am back on the island, I would definitely stay here again!

Arrived to ambergis via ferry and someone from Matachica was there waiting to take us via boat to resort :) Waking into the lobby I immediately knew I had picked a great place to stay and celebrate 50th Bday . Receptionist kind and quick check-in . We stayed in one bedroom cottage painted a beautiful yellow with a hanging chair outside. The interior was gorgeous, bathroom gorgeous and the rose petals a lovely touch.
Loves the pool/ hot tub , I believe it’s salt water because there was n chlorine smell.
The staff at pool were attentive
Food was delicious, especially the homemade bread.
I’d live to stay here again , could spend at least a week here … will need to save $$$

We were looking for a relaxing, minimalist beach vacation and Matachica delivered. The food and service exceeded our expectations at every turn. The casitas were well appointed and spacious. (Note: NO TVs! We were thrilled to be forced to disconnect, though didn't want anyone getting caught off guard.)

Despite the resort being at capacity, things never felt crowded or full. We were especially appreciative of the kitchen...they went to great lengths to accommodate my wife, who is gluten free (I would recommend giving notice of this in advance.)

A few things to note:
Do be sure to book your dinner spots a day in advance, as the main restaurant can get quite busy with people from outside the resort (as I said, the food is fantastic).
Any algae bloom is simply not the resort's fault. I don't get the reviews that are upset by this...5 minutes of reading about the island and you know it's a possibility. The only inconvenience for us was not being able to walk straight out into the ocean from the casita. Instead, you had to go to the end of the dock to "skip over" the incoming seaweed and get to crystal clear water. The staff did their best to rake it up 2 - 3x/day. Head to the leeward side of the island/Secret Beach if you want the ocean "like glass", otherwise, it's just a consequence of being on the windward side of the island.

We spent 4 nights at Matachica, Gaia’s sister resort on the ocean. We had a beautiful room, with a water view. The room was spacious, with a comfortable king size bed, fine linens and a mosquito net (we saw no bugs in our casita). There is a nice sitting area with a couch and chairs. The bathroom room was ample with plenty of closet and drawer storage space. After looking at how the other rooms were situated (note that all rooms seemed nice) I was very happy with our beach front casita.
The grounds are beautifully maintained. The pool area is also very nice. The beach area is pleasant, with lounge chairs. We also really enjoyed sitting in the giant lounge chairs on the dock and swimming there, the water was wonderful and warm. Unfortunately the seaweed sargassum, which isn’t good to swim in prevented us from swimming from the beach. The grounds keepers are diligent about sweeping it up. On-site you can borrow kayaks or snorkels. It’s important to note that nothing is close to the resort, to get to other beaches or restaurants requires a golf cart rental or taxi.
We ate all our meals there. The continental breakfast was included and adequate, served with fresh fruit and delicious granola, and you could get toast if you wanted. We also had morning coffee brought to our room each morning. We ate dinner at both the Bistro and Mambo restaurant. The food was excellent. Service can sometimes be a bit slow or innatentive. We had an exceptional meal at Mambo, which is their upscale restaurant. I also recommend having the Captain’s Dinner, which is a 5 course tasting menu which has a delicious, local menu.
If you are looking for an exceptional resort experience, I would recommend Matachica. The staff is attentive and can provide you with what ever you need, transportation to and from the airports, or from Gaia. You don’t need to leave as everything is there for you. The environment is serene without the loud resort music or bar areas every 30 feet.

No mini Fridges in the room. You can get ice at the bar. You can rent a golf cart and head up towards San Pedro and there’s some grocery stores for snacks. If you drink alcohol best thing to do is get it at duty-free at the airport because all alcohol is charged at the resort.
