We had such an amazing time reef fishing with Captain Sam and Lucas that we booked two more days of it!! They are the type of guides you hope for when you travel: they know the area, the water, the winds, and adjust as the day progresses! We had so many great experiences and encounter, but our three excursions with them were our favorite part of staying at Matachica!!

We finally arrive at around 6pm after taking the hour and a half water taxi from Belize City and we have all these merchants in our face about taxi rides and golf cart rentals. We were so overwhelmed I decided to call the hotel and ask the best way to get there and they already had the captain waiting for us to take us on their private boat up to the hotel. That instantly made me love these people. Every single person on the staff was accommodating and kind and made our stay incredible.
The room was the most amazing room I have ever gotten to stay in in my life. They had very large mosquito nets around the bed which were necessary, but since they were so big it didn't make the bed feel claustrophobic. They would come into the room twice a day once to make the bed and once to turn down and light incense to help against mosquitoes. We loved the smell of the incense too it wasn't too over powering.
The food was so good we ate at the restaurant multiple times because it was so convenient. Every one of us always loved our meals. The cocktails were also really good and they would bring them to you where ever you were on the resort (big plus).
The grounds were stunning and the amenities on the resort were top notch. They have a lot of free stuff to take out into the water. You can grab a kayak and snorkel gear and paddle out to buoys so you can get in the water to snorkel.
We stayed 4 nights and we had excursions every day. I do wish that we just had one more day to stay at the resort and just relax.

Thank you very much for your stay at Matachica and for your review. We do what we can to protect you from the hustle and bustle and it is great to know that this made for the perfect start of your stay. While I am sure you created lots of memories with all the excursions, it looks like you will have to come back to get that relaxation part covered as well. When you are ready, why don't you ask us about our repeat visitor special? Thanks again, Burga Pattinson for the entire Matachica team

Our stay left nothing to be desired, the location was perfect just close enough to the local town center to visit by boat or golf cart but far away enough to be secluded and private. The location was incredibly beautiful with a pristine beachfront and reefs you could visit by just kayaking out from the hotel. The individual separated rooms with their own entrance and hammocks were very private and comfortable. I felt the staff and the layout of the property made it very covid safe and I took note that the staff was thoroughly cleaning everything behind guests and always wearing their masks. The hotel also had onsite covid testing which meant we didnt have to go anywhere for the tests we needed for our flight. The food at the restaurant on the property was the best I had the entire trip there was almost no reason to go into town. Reminiscent of my best dining experiences in Michelin star restaurants in places like Paris and Tokyo everything on the menu made for unforgettable culinary delights and top trending Instagram photos. The staff were incredibly helpful, always remembered our names and preferences and set us up with incredible massages as well a schedule packed full of fun activities like snorkeling with sharks. Last but not least the drinks and cocktails at the restaurant, poolside tree bar and on the boat were all really well made and little details like fresh fruit, strong drinks and decorative elements like fruit skins quilted into little animals on the edge of the glass made these the most extravagant and delicious drinks ive had in Belize. All and all an amazing way to round off our trip which started at the sister hotel Gaia in the Belize rainforest which I would also highly suggest.

Once they pick you up from the ferry (they do it in style, on a boat with free welcome drinks custom made for you), you don't need to worry about anything. They'll take care of all arrangements, all details, just tell what you want. They are not cheap (but not super expensive either) but they do know how to take care about the guests.

Now, some things to consider. This is beach resort, so the main activities are about the beach and the reef nearby (you can kayak there and snorkel or take a boat trip). But if you happen to be there during sea grass season ... Well, you'll probably smell it, but you can still enjoy your vacation. Swimming off the pier is fine, the water is clear after first 50 feet or so. You can also go to Secret Beach, it's a short ride on a golf cart or a bicycle to the other side of the island - there is no grass there. Also, it's fairly far from the town, so this is a great hide out location to relax, but it may not work if you're looking for a more social vacation.

We were super excited about visiting Matachica but both felt (given the cost of staying here) that it fell a little short. We couldn't fault the staff who were all super pleasant (if a little out of touch at times). The rooms are okay - they reminded me of the places i used to stay in south east asia when i was a backpacker, albeit with a better bathroom and a colourful paintjob but ultimately were the same huts that were in need of a refurb. The beds were also a little odd, my husband and I ended up in the sunken middle area of the bed each night. The main area of the resort was a little drab and stylistically very confused (i found it odd that this resort self promotes it's amazing design when it was in my opinion all over the place). The food at mambo was nice, but so so so expensive and the dining area lacked any atmosphere. The best evening we had by far was when we escaped from Matachica and went and ate at the truckstop which was reasonably priced with an excellent choice of food. and super fun atomosphere. We were somewhat surprised that we were advised by hotel staff not to go as far as the town as it was such a long and dusty road in the golf carts - it took barely 15 minutes and provided us with some much needed respite from the boredom of the hotel. The pool bar was great but opened late and closed early and for the time we were there, the hot tub was occupied by the same large american woman who was taking full advantage of happy hour and loudly telling other unsuspecting hot-tubbers her full life story (every day).
In short, matachica is neither very relaxing nor fun (in my opinion).

Thank you very much for your review. It is great that you enjoyed the service offered at Matachica and the food at Mambo Restaurant. We are sorry that you did not like our design choices which a number of magazines and online publications deemed interesting and exciting enough for feature stories, but we understand that tastes differ. We also understand that the laid-back vibe at Matachica which the majority of our visitors come for to get a break from everyday life was not what you were looking for, and we are glad that you found a more lively alternative for your evenings, so that you could enjoy a fun time. Thank you again for visiting our beautiful country. Burga Pattinson

After taking a short flight yo San Pedro and then a quick boat ride to Matachica, I felt as if I was entering a most beautiful and exotic resort. One immediately notices the well maintained beach, inviting sea pods to relax on while enjoying a delicious cocktail of your choice. The setting is very tranquil and this is the vibe of the whole resort. Chill.
We had the Melon room which was very spacious, excellent bed and bedding that opened up to the inviting sea. The bathroom has good amenities.
What I really appreciated was the attentiveness of the staff who all seem to take their jobs seriously and who wanted to please. We had all of our meals at the hotel and choices were plentiful and the food was delicious ( and the cocktails are outstanding!)
Our days were spent enjoying the beach, snorkeling which was world class and relaxing.
If you want to unplug and really feel that you are away from it all, Matachica is an excellent choice. I would highly recommend and look forward to my next stay!

We couldn't have picked a better spot for our honeymoon in Belize. We opted in for the honeymoon package that is offered, and it was blissful, and extremely well priced experience.
The level of service was top notch from the moment we arrived at the San Pedro airport and were boated to the resort, to the immaculate daily cleaning of the room, and of course the friendly staff, servers, and bartenders. Jordy, Louis, Amy, Derby, and Dawn would refer to us by name, and were always happy to go out of their way to accommodate us. From bringing drinks to us by the pool, having a dessert from the bistro brought to us in Mambo, to even driving us to a near by convenience store so that I could find a shirt to keep my arms shielded from the sun, we felt the added 15% gratuity was never enough for the level of service we received and we were happy to always add to that.
I hate that I cannot remember the name of the incredibly hospitable gentlemen at the front desk, but he was always there to help us rent a golf cart, reserve a massage, arrange our snorkeling and Mayan ruins tours, and schedule our Covid tests for reentry the US. They all went off without a hitch!
Food at both restaurants was consistently delicious. Between the two, we were never at a loss for something different.
We loved the secluded location, and were happy to be away from the hustle and bustle of San Pedro, which was still only a 20 minute golf cart ride away.
Beautiful place, top notch service, and we couldn't imagine a better honeymoon.
Thanks Matachica!!

Negatives
Matachica is not cheap and there are some mosquitos on the property. If you are on a tight budget or are very bothered by mosquitos, you may second guess this resort, but if not, I would highly recommend Matachica!

Service
Matachica staff treated us like royalty. We did not touch our bags from the airport to the resort. On the boat ride in our complimentary drink order was called in so it was waiting for us when we stepped off the dock at the resort. That set the tone for the amazing service we got all week!

Property
The water was gorgeous with white sand beaches. They do get sea grass here, but staff rakes it up each morning so there is hardly any on the beach and there was no smell of it. They could also be found regularly sweeping sand off of wooden walkways and raking it every day. They kept the resort in pristine shape and it truly felt like an island Paradise.

Activities
We spent a lot of time relaxing in the lounge chairs, but enjoyed the complimentary snorkeling gear, kayaks, and paddle boards. There is a bouy a few hundred yards off the beach at Matachica, so you can paddle out there and tie off and have good snorkeling. For activities, we did a massage, private snorkeling at Mexico rocks, group snorkeling at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, private dinner on the pier, and visited San Pedro and Secret Beach. Our favorite activity was the group snorkeling trip; the marine life was incredible! One let down was visiting San Pedro. Based on Matachica, we were expecting the rest of the island to be kept very nicely and sprinkled with extremely high-quality resorts. In town we found it to be busy and seemed to be in slight disrepair. Secret beach seemed to us to be a party atmosphere and cheap place to drink. After our trip to town we had a great appreciation for how nice Matatchica is! There is nowhere else on Ambergris Caye we would have rather stayed.

Food
The food at the resort was top notch and we ate almost all of our meals there. They had some of the best bread I had in my life and all the food was perfectly cooked. It is a big bonus that the restaurant is only about 15 yards from the beach and every seat has beautiful views!

Room
Our room was a Seafront Casita, only 20 yards from the water with a private hammock on the front porch! We woke up most mornings to watch the sun rise from our bed. It was kept very clean by the staff! Bathroom was very nice and the AC worked great.

Matachica is the best resort on Ambergris Caye!

The staff was helpful and friendly at first, and pointed us in the direction of the bar in a very friendly manner. However, after the first server tried to prepare a bloody Mary for me, I had to send it back because it was very salty and not exactly drinkable.

She advised that I should wait to the bartender arrive to work, which I did. I specifically asked for my replacement drink to not be spicy or salty. The actual bartender then prepared the bloody Mary for me, and it was actually even saltier than the first one. When I went in to let them know and settle up the bill, the bartender simply advise that the drink was US$12.50... and was unmoved by the fact that I was returning a full drink that I had explained was not drinkable.

It is a shame that such a wonderful property would leave such a mark in my mind, especially such a negative one! I am not sure that the high price of the resort is worth the service you get! Unfortunately!

Thank you very much for your visit to Mambo Bar and for your review. After consulting with the bar staff, we are currently looking for an alternative provider for the tomato juice used in the Bloody Mary, since we were assured that no salt was added to your replacement drink. Again, thank you very much for drawing our attention to this matter, Burga Pattinson

After two years of staying put, we were thrilled to finally escape our COVID pod and relax on the beach. I read all of the Matachica reviews and wasn't one bit disappointed.

I found everyone on the staff to be kind, efficient, and knowledgeable. Shout out to Jennifer at the front desk and Charlie who ran our boat excursions. Both are exceptional folks.

We ate at the Bistro every morning with the continental breakfast, freshly baked bread was outstanding and dinners were just as good. We had Mambo, the luxe restaurant the last night, and it was worth every penny.

The rooms were spotless, everything stayed tidy the entire time, the resort offered bug spray for the mosquitos and the bathrooms were stocked with everything you'd need.

We absolutely loved our stay. The kayaking, snorkeling, sunset cruise, the food, the pool, walks on the beach, all of it was so memorable. We can't wait to return. I wouldn't hesitate to book this resort again. I can't wait to return. We stayed in a casita by the pool, our friends stayed in an oceanfront, both were equally great. But, of course, there's nothing as good as waking up to the sunrise on your veranda.

No mini Fridges in the room. You can get ice at the bar. You can rent a golf cart and head up towards San Pedro and there’s some grocery stores for snacks. If you drink alcohol best thing to do is get it at duty-free at the airport because all alcohol is charged at the resort.
