We stayed here during our Belizian trip and absolutely loved it. The property is north of San Pedro, secluded and quiet. This is not a mega resort where you have to struggle to find a beach or pool chair with loud people all over. This is a very private spot. Pros: Location is away from large, busy resorts and the town. You can get to relax in tranquility. Service and staff are top notch. The property including pool, grounds and the room are very well maintained. The boat tours were conveniently leaving from the hotel dock and the boat guys were great. Also, they pick you up from airport by boat in "White lotus" fashion ;)) We had an amazing massage at the spa. The golf carts were fun and convenient but expect a bumpy ride to town. We didn't try their dinner and cannot comment of quality of food. Cons: this is a spendy place. You get great quality and service, but the price tag is steep. Breakfast could be more glorious than a basic continental in this price range. Drinks at the pool bar were mediocre. if you are looking for a personalized experience in a private and pretty property and don't mind the cost, this will be your place! Enjoy ... …
I had the good fortune to go to Matachica Resort for my son's wedding. The entire staff makes you feel so special, like you are part of a big family. It is peaceful at the resort, it's a great place to relax, unwind, and ground yourself. The food is so delicious, and is presented beautifully by the helpful wait staff. There is plenty to do if you are so inclined. And if you don't want to do anything, the grounds provide numerous ways and places to relax. I found great solace at the end of the main dock. I fell asleep to the sounds of the waves crashing over the reef in the distance. I hope to go back again! Thank you for making me feel so special!!
Friendly, courteous, and helpful staff, great food at the resort restaurants, and quiet location. Great place to relax and enjoy Ambergris Caye. We were picked up promptly from the local airport and taken on a boat ride to the resort, where our room was waiting. The rooms were comfortable and well-kept with (thankfully) strong A/C. The grounds are well maintained by the staff and you're sure to meet Taco, the resort's fun loving dog, while walking around. Definitely take the time to enjoy a drink at the pool bar around sunset! I'd definitely recommend doing this resort's snorkeling excursion if/when it's offered. Awesome sights and very personal experience that's hard to match. The one knock on the experience here is that the water in front of the resort was plagued at the time by sargassum seaweed. Not the most pleasant but certainly not the fault of Matachica. Also, be sure to visit their sister resort, Gaia Riverlodge! …
We were looking for a relaxing, minimalist beach vacation and Matachica delivered. The food and service exceeded our expectations at every turn. The casitas were well appointed and spacious. (Note: NO TVs! We were thrilled to be forced to disconnect, though didn't want anyone getting caught off guard.) Despite the resort being at capacity, things never felt crowded or full. We were especially appreciative of the kitchen...they went to great lengths to accommodate my wife, who is gluten free (I would recommend giving notice of this in advance.) A few things to note: Do be sure to book your dinner spots a day in advance, as the main restaurant can get quite busy with people from outside the resort (as I said, the food is fantastic). Any algae bloom is simply not the resort's fault. I don't get the reviews that are upset by this...5 minutes of reading about the island and you know it's a possibility. The only inconvenience for us was not being able to walk straight out into the ocean from the casita. Instead, you had to go to the end of the dock to "skip over" the incoming seaweed and get to crystal clear water. The staff did their best to rake it up 2 - 3x/day. Head to the leeward side of the island/Secret Beach if you want the ocean "like glass", otherwise, it's just a consequence of being on the windward side of the island.…
Matachica is beyond description, but I will try. First, the people. We fell in love with the Belizean people within the first hour of being there. The staff is unbelievably friendly, and became family to us. From the service to our casita by Brenda, to Marvin who made sure my wife always had ice for her water, and Moises at the restaurant. They were all so professional and looking to serve us in any way we required. They front desk and concierge helped us book outings and made great recommendations. The facility was kept immaculate, even as the winds tried to move sand and leaves everywhere. The beach crew kept the beach clean of seaweed, which we did not find as a problem as some reviewers did. Don't miss Taco Tuesday and the live music. We really felt the vibe. We used the pool and hot,hot hot tub. It felt so good after a day of driving the bumpy roads in our golf cart. What a hoot that was. The food at Matachica as well as all the nearby food stands and cafes was incredible. We had fish of all kinds, lobster, shrimp, crab prepared in creole and other local menus. Never got tired of the food choices. Red meat is there, but why bother. We spent time on the reef swimming with the sharks and rays, and myriad beautiful tropical fish. We need to go back and try the fishing, which we heard was great from some of our neighbors at the resort. Skip Secret Beach unless you are young, have young kids, or love to be with a lot of drunks. A must is Truck Stop and The Garage for well prepared food and experiences. While bugs were not a problem for us, bring bug dope anyway. Some of the venues had mosquitos. Matachica is way off the beaten path, but we were looking to avoid the party scene and the resort is so very quiet. Rooms are comfortable and the AC is as cold as you want it to be. We are already trying to find a time to return.…
Very relaxing.. food was excellent.. staff very helpful and friendly.. grounds were beautiful.loved hanging out with the local pup, Taco..sunrise beautiful each morning and coffee delivery to room was a bonis
Boat ride from the airport, cocktail waiting upon arrival, private cottages, pristine beach, in house boats, guides, and excursions….. semi remote location. What more can you say? Oh, every single staff member was well trained and focused on client satisfaction.
Everything at Matachica was phenomenal. All of the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. They were always checking in with us to make sure our needs were met and they were willing to go above and beyond whenever we needed anything. The food at the resort was amazing. The freshly baked pastries were the highlight of each morning. We couldn't wait to head to breakfast to see what the choices were each day. The accommodations were perfect - our little casita was so romantic and the view of the ocean was breathtaking. We were 10 steps from the water and it was perfect. We went on a few tours through the resort and the tour guides were so knowledgeable and helpful. I'm uncomfortable in the water and they made sure I was not left behind and I always felt safe with them. We used the spa at the resort as well and that was easily one of the best deep tissue massages I have ever had. I felt like a new person after walking out of there. I loved every minute of Matachica and if I had endless amounts of money, I would never leave. …
We stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed the location, food, area, and character of the resort. Staff were friendly and gracious. We stayed in an ocean view casita and it was fine - loved the decor. Would go again.
My wife and I can't say or think of enough good things to say about our experience with Matachica & Gaia. We explored a great portion of Belize through the different guided trips available. It's one of the very few times in our life that we feel an experience was executed well. From customer service, to food options, to accommodations, everything hit the mark. Can't wait to go back and pet Coco and Taco (The lodges local dogs).
