Absolutely the most romantic place you and a loved one can stay in in Belize. The "Casitas" are beautifully designed and decorated. The staff members are amazing. The entire place feels like a dream. My wife and I were there for our honeymoon and we loved it. No children under 16 can stay there but can visit for dinners. Meaning, no small children running around and parents running after them. No chicken finger meals. The food however is amazing for such a small place. I could recommend this place forever.

We were super excited about visiting Matachica but both felt (given the cost of staying here) that it fell a little short. We couldn't fault the staff who were all super pleasant (if a little out of touch at times). The rooms are okay - they reminded me of the places i used to stay in south east asia when i was a backpacker, albeit with a better bathroom and a colourful paintjob but ultimately were the same huts that were in need of a refurb. The beds were also a little odd, my husband and I ended up in the sunken middle area of the bed each night. The main area of the resort was a little drab and stylistically very confused (i found it odd that this resort self promotes it's amazing design when it was in my opinion all over the place). The food at mambo was nice, but so so so expensive and the dining area lacked any atmosphere. The best evening we had by far was when we escaped from Matachica and went and ate at the truckstop which was reasonably priced with an excellent choice of food. and super fun atomosphere. We were somewhat surprised that we were advised by hotel staff not to go as far as the town as it was such a long and dusty road in the golf carts - it took barely 15 minutes and provided us with some much needed respite from the boredom of the hotel. The pool bar was great but opened late and closed early and for the time we were there, the hot tub was occupied by the same large american woman who was taking full advantage of happy hour and loudly telling other unsuspecting hot-tubbers her full life story (every day). In short, matachica is neither very relaxing nor fun (in my opinion).

Thank you very much for your review. It is great that you enjoyed the service offered at Matachica and the food at Mambo Restaurant. We are sorry that you did not like our design choices which a number of magazines and online publications deemed interesting and exciting enough for feature stories, but we understand that tastes differ. We also understand that the laid-back vibe at Matachica which the majority of our visitors come for to get a break from everyday life was not what you were looking for, and we are glad that you found a more lively alternative for your evenings, so that you could enjoy a fun time. Thank you again for visiting our beautiful country. Burga Pattinson

We just got back from celebrating our 20th anniversary at this little gem in beautiful Belize. We cannot say enough good things about this resort, and absolutely hope to return. The resort is beautiful and extremely well maintained. It is a low key boutique setting with a relaxed island vibe and an emphasis on service and attention to detail. We stayed in a seaside casita and the view from our room was spectacular. Loved the nightly turn down service and the romantic, caribbean themed rooms. Other than the view and overall relaxing ambiance of the resort, highlights included a 1/2 day of reef fishing (where the chef prepares what you catch) and a resort snorkel trip to the marine preserve and shark ray alley. Fabulous snorkeling included multiple spotted eagle rays, an eel, nurse sharks and endless beautiful fish and coral. The staff at Matachica is top notch - attentive, friendly, and always smiling. We thought we would venture out and try other island restaurants, but we wound up eating almost every meal at the Mambo restaurant onsite because it was just that good. Delicious happy hour cocktails at Danny's Tree Bar capped off every afternoon. The resort's slogan that "the world can wait" perfectly sums up our experience at this tiny slice of paradise!

We stayed for 3 nights at the beginning of a 4 week trip to Belize & Mexico. We stayed in Pomegranate, a lovely room with excellent lay-out; super large bathroom with space for all luggage/clothing- meaning the bedroom and seating area could be kept free of clutter. I think the room was described as being 60 feet to the waters edge- which was pretty accurate. A lovely swimming pool and terrace. We made the choice to stay here on basis of the strong comments regarding the resort's restaurant- and we were not disappointed- some of the best food acroos ouir 4 week trip. Travelling from the UK we used Matachica in order to "get over jet lag", but we did take the snorkelling trip to shark ray alley- and this is an absolute must- we swam with nurse sharks (so many my wife could hardly enter the water), rays, and had that unforgettable moment when a loggerhead turtle swims right beside you for a couple of minutes- magical. I find it easy to recommend Matachica- great cocktails too.
