Had to get away from smoky air due to fires and because too much restrictions due to Covid we were glad to find this island open. Large room and spacious bathroom with jacuzzi, beautiful courtyard garden with music and fireplace lit in evening, beautiful paintings, frames showcasing island and its history, over-all cleanliness is good, I thought bed was hard but hubby said soft and we slept very well, no coffee first day but was there the next day, juice fountain all day, walking distance to the beach and the rest of the shops and sites, no staff in office at times but easy to reach and responsive, they were kind to let kids stay to finish up online class after check out and let us keep our luggage in the lobby before our ferry ride. We were able to do some activities although some are closed due to Covid but had great time doing submarine experience, hike to the garden, tour by shuttle and kids did aerial adventure/obstacle course on treetops, enjoyed the beach, clear, clean waters... food was pricey but very good, social distancing observed throughout the island and visitors and locals compliant with mask use, and sanitizers and clean restrooms all over the place, great experience...rooms pricey but expected as everything costs a lot to be shipped to this island, hoping to come back with more friends and family...

Managed to find a good deal as booked the same day when already on the way to the island on the ferry. Had a good sized room which included a large bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. Decor is a bit dated but not shockingly so. Breakfast was adequate as can be expected in this class of establishment and staff were all helpful and friendly.

I rented three rooms for the weekend. Ours was a two bedroom suite, over three hundred dollars more than the single queen and king bed rooms. We had a stained couch and bed in one room. The other room had a bed. Our old refrigerator and microwave was situated under the bathroom sink in the single king room. We had two showers, no tub. The other rooms had spa tubs and separate showers. Our room had chipped tile and flooring. Book a stay with a king sized bed if you want a long walk to the hotel and no view.

He was great we stayed in one of the view rooms (best view we have ever had in Catalina) and were very comfortable in a renovated room that had most all the comforts to make our stay great! My recent stay at Catalina Courtyard Suites was delightful. The hotel’s unique charm immediately caught my eye, and its convenient location near all the shopping, restaurants and beach made exploring the area incredibly easy and enjoyable.
We were also fortunate enough to meet Jacob, the owner, who is truly fabulous! It was inspiring to hear about the amazing Improvement he is planning on doing with the hotel in the next year. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a special place to stay in Catalina. We can’t wait to return! The Roeben's

King room was nice size, very large bathroom, super clean, lovely fire pit to sit around at night. Downside is getting into building after 7pm you must enter thru courtyard and hike up a number of steep stairs. Also bed was rock hard.

This place is a mixed bag. The location was great, less than a block from the main drag, so close to restaurants, shopping and the water, which was lovely. The beds were comfortable. Our room had no view and barely a window. Their idea of a breakfast offering did not approximate anything like a meal. Cookies, instant hot chocolate and lemonade. Our shower was near to impossible to turn on, and it was even nearer to impossible to find the hot water. Catalina is suffering a severe drought, and this waste of water felt horrible and unnecessary. There was a cubby with a frosted-over fridge and small microwave, but no cups, cutlery, or anything that might facilitate food preparation. The person who checked us in was very cordial.

I made the decision to stay at the Courtyard Garden Suites after reading just about all of the reviews on Trip Advisor, so I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. We arrived on a Sunday about noon and I already knew that it was early for a 2:00 check in so naturally I assumed we could have our luggage stored until our room was ready. We took a cab from the Catalina Express pier, which I was glad we did because my husband can’t walk too far at one time and the luggage made it more cumbersome and this hotel is located on the end of the main drag, Crescent Avenue. When we went into the office to check in we found that the door was locked and no one there. We called the number on the door and a nice young woman stated that we just needed to come over to their sister hotel, the Hotel Catalina. She gave me horrible directions and so we ended up schlepping our bags up one hill and down another so by the time we arrived in the office we were hot and out of breath. Evidently a lot of visitors had the same thought as the lobby was filled with luggage. The nice young lady checked us in at her desk and said they would call us when our room was ready and would have our luggage in the room when we arrived. We went and had lunch and then decided to take a chance and see if our room was ready yet. It was and it was quite nice, room 501, but our luggage was not there. The manager quickly got on the two -way and requested that it be brought up. After about 15 minutes it arrived. The room was very clean, the bed was comfortable but the room overall was not exactly what I was expecting. Most of the reviews had stated “beautiful Ocean View” and “Full Kitchen”, neither of which we had. It had a small under counter fridge and microwave with a very large big screen TV over the dresser. The bathroom had recently been renovated and the stone was very pretty with a huge sunken whirlpool bathtub. Since I live in drought- ravaged CA I felt too guilty to take a bath and waste all of that water so I did not use it. The shower had no pressure but in CA you have to get used to that. The linens were very nice. When we checked in we were told that they light the fire pit around 6:00 every night and have coffee and donuts every morning at 8:00. The fire pit was never lit that night and Monday morning came with no donuts. They finally arrived after I asked for them. Overall, it was a nice place but unremarkable. One tip, you can cut through this hotel and land on the next street…a shortcut that would have been very nice to know about when we arrived.

We were traveling with our two 20ish children. We wanted real beds for them. We got a room with two kings. The beds were great! Also, we needed to stay a bit late on the last day of our stay and the staff gave us a late check out that made it possible for us to scuba dive that morning.

We didn't see anything about breakfast on the advertising, but there actually was coffee and some small items for breakfast. That was a nice surprise.

They had a fire pit. We went out and met some really nice people.

That being said, some constructive criticism:
- the shower water temperature only got to lukewarm;
- this room is definitely in the process of being upgraded - some of it needs a bit more "love";
- no one was ever at the office - we solved that by going up the street to the sister hotel - probably better if they just tell you to go to that hotel rather than trying to call them ...

Ok...I am going to warn you as others have before me....do yourself a favor and stay SOMEWHERE ELSE!
About 3 months ago, we were looking for accommodations and things were getting booked pretty fast. It came down to air bnb's on the wrong side of the island or the penthouse at Hotel Catalina. The first mistake was not reading the reviews beforehand, like I always do as I have been in the travel industry for over 20 years, so I know better, but we were getting nervous and just booked it without another thought.
The day of our arrival, before leaving Dana Point, we called inquiring about transportation and was told by Ignacio the front desk manager, they did not offer transportation and our options were a $10 shuttle or we could walk which would take about 15 minutes. As if! Having never been to the island, we did not know. My friend was annoyed at how curt he was with me on the phone and called back to verify they were not going to cover the shuttle and was told the same thing. When we docked, we called the hotel and was told where to find the shuttle. When we pulled up to the hotel, and went into the lobby, that's when we discovered mistake #2, which they DO NOT clarify on their site or any booking site....there is a Hotel Catalina and a Courtyard Garden Suites. The penthouse is NOT at Hotel Catalina...the blue sign you see from the ferry, it's actually at the Courtyard Garden Suites. We arrived at 1:40 and was told by Ignacio that check in is at 2:00 and that we could not check in earlier. With only 20 minutes to go (or so we thought), we camped out in the lobby. While sitting there, we noticed Ignacio taking other guests to their rooms. With my background, I am aware that if rooms are ready, you can check in a little early, but we were not offered any explanation as to why he was allowing other guests to check in and not us again as he was adamant, that check in was 2:00. 2:00 came and went with no sign of Ignacio. By 2:15, we called the mainline and spoke to another manager who promised to call him. To our dismay, he left his cell phone on his desk, so nobody could contact him. At 2:30, we saw Ignacio and housekeeping leaving from the Penthouse and he finally gave us keys without any apologies for the delay or any explanations. We were directed to our private elevator, but due to the age and claustrophobic nature, we sent our luggage up and decided to take the stairs. While it looked as if the furnishings have not been updated since the hotel was first opened, we were quite impressed with the space and the modern upgrade to the shower in the master bath. What we were not impressed with was the fact that we found remnants of dried food on the dining room rug and throughout the entire unit which we found gross and alarming, particularly since they keep a vacuum cleaner in the closet and this is the most expensive unit on property. It was also quite hot and after noticing the thermostat said 77 degrees we turned it down to 65.
Nevertheless, we just wanted to head to our friends yacht. After being gone for 6-7 hours, we returned to a locked hotel entrance. Our key only gave us access to our elevator, but to use the stairs, we needed actual key cards to get into the hotel, which Ignacio did not provide. We called a staff member and when they arrived, their key card did not work. It took an additional 10 minutes and 2 staff members to get us access to the hotel. Upon entering our PH it was still hot with the thermostat reading 81 degrees! We called engineering and after about 15 minutes, he declared "It's broke", without explaining what exactly was broken. As we were sitting around trying to figure out what to do as it was 11:00pm, we got a knock at the door and were surprised when 3 cops entered our room along with Cathy, an Asst Mgr we had not previously met. Apparently, Ignacio sent them to kick us out because we complained too much! The cops were very nice and very sympathetic to our issues as they too were hot and they also understood that when you're paying $1800 for 2 nights, you have earned the right to top notch service which we did not receive at all. They were not inclined to make us leave and neither was Cathy who then apologized for our unfortunate circumstances we encountered earlier. She also explained that they clean all of the bottom level rooms first, saving the PH until the end because it's the largest suite on property. Finally, we had a decent explanation for why Ignacio walked other guests to their rooms ahead of us. After careful negotiations, Cathy agreed to bring us an industrial sized fan and she came back the next day with key cards. Cathy was great & we were glad to have the situation rectified for the remainder of the weekend.
