Buyer beware! There was not even a golf cart shuttle from the harbor up the steep hill to the hotel. When we got there the hotel was 'tired' and in need of maintenance. We hiked up yet another really steep hill to our room near the dumpsters and loading area. The room was tiny and weathered. Not even coffee in the room. Management seemed somewhat indifferent to our requests. Particularly embarrassing as this was a special weekend with my wife. Won't be staying there again.

Booked this hotel for a birthday celebration however due to the coronavirus and mandatory shutdown, we're unable to attend. First of all, the small print indicated that my credit card would not be charged until check in but they charged it anyway. I contacted the hotel via email to ask for a refund. The hotel refuses to put me in contact with a manager or call me directly. All communication has been through email. The owner even refuses to provide their name. I have never been involved with a company so unprofessional, unhelpful, and unconcerned. This is not a company that looks at long term customers. We're in a national crisis and I work in healthcare. There should be some flexibility. I'd like to warn others about booking here by offering the final correspondence to me from the "owner": "Greetings, I was informed about your reservation through one of my employees about canceling and refunding. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, you asked if there are any options for canceling and refunding. The answer is no. There is no way we can do so due to booking non-refundable. I'm sorry you aren't happy with I am informing you, but these are the rules we provide for our hotel. Currently, all non-refundable guest is being offered a gift certificate for up to 6 months. Please consider this as friendly gesture, as we hope the covid-19 wears off. Thank you , Owner of Casa Mariquita Hotel" What kind of owner says "the answer is no", "im sorry you aren't happy but these are the rules", "consider this a friendly gesture" "we hope covid-19 wears off"...???... THIS IS LAUGHABLE and an example of how NOT TO TREAT CUSTOMERS.

We spent two nights and found the room and bed to be very comfortable. The pricing was very reasonable and less than most other hotels in Avalon. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. It is only a short walk up the street from the beach and was extremely quiet, considering it's location. We definitely would stay there again

This hotel is really good. It is close to everything, we can easily walk from places to places. The staff is super nice, friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and the beds are very comfortable. Moreover, our room had a beautiful view on Avalon and the sea. On top of that, this hotel is not expensive. I will definitely recommend it if we are looking for a nice place to stay and not too expensive.

This is one of those old "funky" hotels, near Avalon bay, that could be pretty but it's kind of rundown. However, the worst part is the total lack of customer service or hospitality. The two different agents we experienced at the front desk were void of smiles, welcomes or any sort of friendliness. When we arrived, the opening line was "I need your credit card and ID." Then we were told we'd get any info we needed and the rules when we came back at check in time. When we returned, agent #2 launched right into the times for breakfast (which, BTW is advertised as "breakfast", but is really only continental), the rules, etc. Never once did either of them welcome us or smile. Nada. Later because I felt a bit under the weather, we were napping and since we had been given the room right next to Housekeeping (#15 if you are wondering), we were disturbed by loud chatter by the maids as well as their radio. I kept thinking it would end, but when it didn't I called the desk to ask them to intervene. Their comment was "well, they've been cleaning rooms all day and have to fold the sheets." No, "I'm sorry." She did call them because the radio went off, but then the maids made a point of talking louder; finally they left for the day. Thirdly, the room layout had the TV over to the side of the bed, which is ridiculous since one cannot watch it sideways without a major crick in the neck. Obviously, we will not stay here again. I have to believe that there are more hospitable "funky" inns on Catalina and I would encourage people to shop around. Note: we booked via Booking.com, which I see now may have been wrong, as we didn't talk to the hotel in advance in person. Perhaps we would have caught their lack of customer interest sooner.
