Stayed here only one night with my family. We reserved a jack and jill room and a mini suite w/ full kitchen and sofa sleeper. The jack and jill rooms are very nice, I would recommend them if you need 2 rooms w/ one bath. Very convenient w/ a mini frige, but no AC so summer days/nights can be a bit warm. Open windows and fans made it comfortable enough. 2 of the 3 beds were nice, the 3rd was too soft. Overall these rooms were clean and comfortable.
We were told our mini suite would be ready by 3pm, come 6pm it still wasn't cleaned. The manager was very apologetic and offered my family free beer, wine or other refreshments. He also discounted the room and had it cleaned immediately. Overall the room was nice, it had a full kitchen w/ one burner stove, dishes, full refrigerator and small table w/ 2 chairs plus a sleeper sofa. There was no door separating the main bed from kitchen/couch area, but this wasn't a problem for us. The sofa sleeper however, was very uncomfortable. It was at a significant incline such that we had to sleep with our head at the foot of the bed. When we opened it, there was a lot of hair under the couch and no blankets in the room (likely just forgotten in the rush).
I noticed the stairs were very dirty when we arrived but the next day they had been vacuumed and looked cleaner. The community balcony was nice to sit outside and have a drink (no covid concerns as it was only my family outside). In my opinion they could definitely step up the cleaning throughout the property but it wouldn't keep me from staying there again.
The hotel staff wore masks and had hand sanitizer available for guests. They also designated one door as an entrance and the other as an exit to help with physical distance. I didn't see anyone wiping surfaces to disinfect, but we were also only there in the evening, so it's possible it was done during the day.
I would recommend this hotel for the price I think you get a great location and very friendly and helpful staff. Most of the hotels on the island are very old and maintain the original look so if this is known and expected, I think the property is a good choice.

Hermosa Hotel is located just around the corner from Main Street with a convenient location and approachable price. While the room was quaint and the building needing some love, the overall experience was positive. Our overall experience in Avalon more than made up for the little time we spent at the hotel.

This historic hotel offers an affordable price and convenient location. It is close to the attractions in Avalon since it is located on Metropole, right in the middle of the action. We experienced friendly customer service, clean room, and was able to check in early and checked out late given our schedule in October. The room was a cottage on the street level, only going up 4 steps, we had what we needed in the room and was able to fit our golf clubs and 2 bikes. A couple of things were inconvenient - bathroom light suddenly went out almost like it was on a timer and we did not have TV connection on Day 2 afternoon and evening. We notified the front office and they worked to fix the TV connection but was not fixed before check out. The air conditioning during the hot spell worked very well so kept us cool. Really look forward to the new bar including coffee/tea service being up and running. Good that there is a breakfast/coffee place just down the street that was open by 6:30. Overall good experience.

Hello sarab!! We are happy that your experience was good :) The island at time has been known to have spotty internet and TV service from time to time, being that it's an island with limited towers we all have to share with each other. We will keep note of this for your next stay, we'll do everything we can to make sure your TV signal is in great condition.

Staying at this hotel, I had clear expectations that the rooms would be small, older, and "historic." However, the physical space was at least somewhat updated. We stayed in 50/51 - the Jack and Jill rooms. With LVP flooring and mostly white decor, it looked fairly clean and modern. I really liked the size for a family of 4, and that we had two separate rooms (making it easy to have kids in one room and adults in another).

However, the cleanliness was a MAJOR issue. The ACs were not cleaned out at all with the ACs blowing up dust particles. Turned out the filters were full of black dust and looked like they hadn't been cleaned out in years. The fan was covered in dust. The floors were black with dirt. They apparently never mopped either. I had requested a pack'n'play, but the room did not have one until I went down to the front to get it. Towels and linens were not hung up. There was no curtain on the window facing the street. And the dresser in 50 that had the microwave and fridge on it looked about to collapse. There were broken light bulbs, in the broken drawers. They knew we were coming to stay there with a baby and left falling apart furniture that looked like a literal hazard.

While I thought the physical size was nice enough and the location was great, the upkeep of the hotel was not good at all. I would suggest the hotel take a look at its cleaning practices. Removing the broken and dangerous furniture, hanging a curtain in the bathroom facing the street, and doing a quick swiffer of the floors between guests (or even leaving one for the guests' use) will go a long way toward improving the hotel room.

I almost never write reviews but my husband insisted I do in this case. The location is very good for walking (a little far to the Casino or Descanso but near almost everything else). I booked this hotel for my son and his girlfriend. They would've stayed with us at Hamilton Cove but because of their dog, I chose Hermosa. I'm not even sure where to start. The bed wasn't made upon arrival and they had no towels. My son asked for towels and the lady told him she was the only one there and couldn't leave her post basically (this was Friday). Saturday they asked for towels again and told the same thing. It wasn't until my husband went in there and insisted someone give them towels that she called the on-site "manager" who managed to find some. It is so bizarre. Do they not want their guests to shower? We went to check out the room (#27) and use the bathroom. This place is a dump. I was so afraid there would be a fire or an earthquake. Everything was disgustingly dirty and worn down! The room was bizarre with the bed pushed up against a second door. They were right near the fire escape but the stairs looked like they were on their last legs. I love Catalina and have visited many times so I'm sad to write this but do not stay here. I get it, if you have a dog you have few options on the island, but I'd seriously say leave your dog home and stay somewhere else.

We booked the lower cottage for a family of 4 thinking there were 2 rooms, a great little kitchen, if needed, and a living space to spread out. Immediately upon getting to our "cottage", we all wanted to leave and would have eaten the costs to find another place, but there were none available. The only perks to this hotel was that it was dog friendly and we had our dog with us. The hotel claims to be remodeled, but painted chipping everywhere. There were no doors to separate the "rooms" so absolutely no privacy. The floors were dirty and needed to be swept. They gave us 1/2 roll of toilet paper and paper towels and had to go to the front desk to ask for more. The kitchen was not stocked properly. There were 2 bowls and NO PLATES! I went to the front desk to ask for plates and they just said they didn't have any, so I had to go to the Vons to get some paper plates on my own. They only had plastic forks and spoons and 4 mugs - but no coffee maker. The air conditioner was only in 1 room and did not cool the entire unit. There was a ceiling fan in the same room as the air conditioner, so that didn't help. The hotel did provide another fan for the other "room". The windows and baseboards were filthy - like no one had wiped them down for months. The air conditioner had tons of lint it in as well. One of the screens was completely ripped, so that window could not be opened as it was easy to break into the unit. The unit was so old that all the electrical conduit was exposed, but no one thought to extend the plugs further down the walls, so charging devices was awkward. The lighting was horrible - no fixture in the bathroom and no way to dim the bright bulbs and since there were no doors to separate "rooms" this was annoying. The bathroom was gross as the baseboards were filthy in there and no shelves for toiletries. There was no house keeping. The entire "hotel" is so old and the grounds were dilapidated. Someone needs to come in with A LOT of money to really restore the units, or they really should be demolished. I would never stay here again and would not recommend this place to anyone. The only plus was that it was dog friendly and the location was convenient, but that is the extent of it.

We stayed there for 3 days . When we’re checking out , we asked for a printed receipt of our entire stay. The receptionist ( Jasmine ) said that she cannot print the receipt because it was already sent to our email when we booked earlier. The following day , we checked our credit card bill and found out that we were charged extra $100 . I called her and asked why we’re charged $100 . She said we destroyed 2 towels . I told her that the 2 towels were not destroyed but was just soaking wet because the shower curtain was 2 inches short from the shower floor . There was no other option but to use the towels to wipe the wet floor as we don’t want to slip and get into an accident. So we did complain to the hotel manager but the issues felt on deaf ear. No one wrote us or contacted us to settle the issue . I even found out that the hotel towels were only 50 cents each at Costco because it was the very cheap kind ( automobile dry towels) I felt that the Hermosa Hotel was doing this dirty tactic so they can charge us . I believe we’re not the only ones who experienced these dirty tactics . They set up very strict rules to follow so that one false move and you will be charge ! I believe they resorted to this kind of modus operandi because they are trying to compensate for the lost revenue during the last 2 years of pandemic by overcharging their guests. My advice, go book in another hotel because it will just ruin your vacation .

On arrival They switched our rooms because our cottage was in need of repair and put us in a suite in the main building, calling it an upgrade. Now we have people above us and next to us and noisy stairs nearby. We chose the cottage because we didn’t want someone above us. We come into the room and the toilet was running. A worker came to “fix it” but it continued. The shower had obvious mold. The microwave door was broken and didn’t work well. There were two TV’s and both didn’t work proper. One did not work at all and the other only had 1 local channel and had no remote. No hair dryer provided. No room service during our stay. Air conditioning was set on a timer and we had to keep resetting it. Upon hearing that Edison was turning off the power to the entire hotel at 9:00 am our last day, when asked, the hotel did not know of an alternative for showering/electricity. One final thing was a male hotel worker was taking a short cut through the women’s public bathroom/showers. When we complained the about everything, the hotel comped one day of our stay. But, the overall problems impacted our vacation.

Sadly I wish we had read the reviews before we stayed at cottage H. This was the worst hotel my husband and I have ever stayed at, and we are not particularly picky people when it comes to motel and hotels. We have felt cleaner at a $40 motel with cigarette burns on the comforter. While the Hermosa Hotel cottages have great potential—fantastic location, cute exterior—they are in severe need of repairs and renovations, and also just a good solid clean. The floor to the bathroom was wet when we arrived and there were no towels in the bathroom at all. There is black mold on the ceilings, walls, and floors and giant dents in the door. There are no hangers or anything to put your clothes away in, so we just opened up our suitcases on the floor and walked around them. The kitchen is half-stocked—pots and pans, yes, but no cutlery with which to actually eat. The floors had dirt on them and we did not feel they were clean enough to walk around on bare feet on, even upon first arriving. The curtains are a fire hazard on the heating unit. The door handle to the bathroom is placed on the wrong side so that the kitchen is entirely blocked when the door is open. The bed is poor and the mattress itself has many, many stains if the mattress cover is lifted up. The key card to the door worked about half the time. The walls are dirty and look as if they haven't been cleaned in years.

That said, the check-in staff was very friendly and kind. So, this review has nothing to do with the staff and everything to do with the dire need to repair this place. Black mold is highly toxic and there are so many holes in the walls, whether from nails or someone punching the door (?), that A LOT of work needs to go in to justify the cost of this hotel. Perhaps those in the renovated hotel have had a more pleasant experience, but the cottages leave so much to be desired, most of which is pretty standard cleanliness as it relates to health. We booked for two nights but left after a night. Based on the other reviews, we didn't even try to get our money back.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Hermosa Hotel for a week while visiting the island for his 21st birthday. While the hotel may be small, it was very charming and our room was just perfect for us! Staff was super kind and welcoming, the room was clean and comfortable. We loved that the prices were very affordable, as it gave us the ability to use more of our budget for activities on the island. We had never been to Catalina before and had no clue about walking distances. The Hermosa was literally 2 minutes walking from Vons grocery store, and from the town with all of the shops and restaurants! We really scored when it came to location and will definitely stay here again :)

Hello everyone! Sorry for the late response. The third night will always depend on the room type you are in. Our Ocean View room is an extra $75/night and then $300 for the third night. It also depends on if you're adding a weekday night or weekend night. Please give us a call to check availability and get a specific price quote over the phone!
