We have stayed at the Old Turner Inn multiple times over the last 2 decades and have never been disappointed. Whether Christa or Kathleen was at the helm, the welcome was always warm, the food spectacular, and the company engaging. As other historic establishments have been turned into over-priced "boutiques" stripped of their charm (looking at you, Zane Grey Pueblo!), the Old Turner Inn has remained a place that feels like home. It's by far the best hotel (and the best value) in Avalon.

The Old Turner Inn is a quaint little B&B a few blocks off the waterfront. The theme rooms are well taken care off and the hospitality is second to none. If you're looking for a quiet place to stay just off the beaten path, then this is the place to stay.

We went to The "Old" Turner Inn to celebrate my 50th Birthday, and had a wonderful experience. Christa, the innkeeper, was amazing. This lady can cook. Her breakfasts were to "die for". She made us feel welcome and comfortable. It was like staying in the home of a dear friend. The furnishing in our room, the Seashell, were very inviting. This room receives the morning light, and when you open the blinds, the entire room lights up. Christa's suggestions for where to eat for dinner, were spot on and very helpful. I would recommend anyone to stay at The “Old” Turner Inn in Avalon on Catalina Island, and bring your appetite!!

We stayed at the Old Turner for the weekend with another couple. It's a charming B+B a short walk to the Pier and Main Street. Christa the caretaker was pleasant but a bit cold to us. The place seems appropriate for older couples who can conform to rules that younger people wouldn't. One such rule is no food in the rooms. Being on Catalina and not carrying food is pretty difficult since the prices for restaurants are so high It's natural to go to the supermarket instead of going out to save money. I was stopped by Christa while carrying a bag of ice to my room. She reminded me of the rule, and I said it was for sodas. A place that charges $250ish a night and has such a strict caretaker is not a place I would return to. The Old Turner Inn is fine for older folks, the rooms are small but comfortable and the breakfast is excellent, but I wouldn't recommend it for younger people.

I agree with the first post about the inn's accomdations. Yes, the rooms and innkeeper are very nce. However, what they dont tell you is also important. Most people looking at a B& B vs. hotel are paying for the "experience". Well, the experience at the Old Turner is lacking. There is a tourist bus depot and city yard across the street. The noise was almost unbearable. If you are a heavy sleeper then, it might be OK. However, for my $$, I recommend staying at one of the rental houses a street or two off the main drag. Too bad, because it does have some aesthetic charm.

Response from OldTurnerInn, Owner at The Old Turner Inn
Responded Jan 11, 2009
This review was written in the summer of 2005, since then we have added air conditioning units to the 2 suites that face Catalina Ave. With the units in place, guests can leave their front windows shut - and we have not had any noise complaints since. While there is a tourist bus depot across Catalina Ave., it is NOT directly across the street, but rather across the street and down about 300 yards, and the first bus tour departs at 9am (Summer) and 11:45am the rest of the year. Also, there is not a City Yard across the street, but rather a parking area that the Catalina Island Conservancy uses to park their cars. There is a small freight office directly across the street that does use trucks, but they are closed on weekends.

I feel a bit of a party pooper after all the glowing reviews, but we both agreed we had stayed in several better B and B's, though the Old Turner Inn is a pleasant place. The coffee they make at 7:30 is barely warm by breakfast. When another guest complained about it, Christa said "I'm doing my best!" the next day, the coffee was the same temperature. The hors d'oeuvres were soft cheese covered with jam, chex mix and canned olives. Another day, pretzels and ranch dressing (nothing home made). The house is very nice, yes the street is quiet, but it was not as welcoming as we had been led to believe.

Great location, friendly hostess, good breakfast, nice room and bath. Did not feel like we had any privacy though, as you could easily hear through the walls. And the hostess' shoes woke me up by 7am because she was walking back and forth just under our room all morning long. It sounded like wood shoes on a wood floor. We chose to spend the next night somewhere else even though we had already paid to stay there. She did offer to refund us the second night.

The rooms were great and so was the hospitality, we felt right at home.
The hostess was really sweet and thoughtful and the afternoon wine and hors d'oeuvres were a wonderful touch.

There are so many great things! For me, the special quality of staying at the Old Turner Inn is getting to know fellow travelers, sharing experiences over (a great) breakfast or after the day's activities, enjoying wine, great conversation and stories from Kathleen's father one evening and Dave and Kathleen the next.

The inn is about 200 feet from the plaza where you can book and begin your adventures on the island and about 300 feet from a great, locals restaurant. I highly recommend staying here.

We came to Avalon to celebrate my birthday and found the "Old" Turner Inn to be the ideal place to stay. The inn is conveniently located in the central part of town yet is quiet and sheltering. We peeked into all the rooms and found them all attractive. Ours, the Seashell Room, was very comfortable and private, with wonderful natural light, a perfect king-size bed, and a large, airy bathroom. Christa, who runs the inn, and Bill Hill, who owns it, were gracious and friendly. Early morning coffee is excellent, Christa's enormous breakfasts are beautifully prepared and presented, and there was always an abundance of fresh fruit. The afternoon wine-and-appetizer hour is not to be missed, since that is the time when one can hear fascinating local lore from Christa, Bill, and their friends who have known Catalina since their childhood. They made us feel very much at home (and the appetizers were delicious). One of the old-timers, Dave, even gave us a guided tour of the neighborhood's architecture. If you're looking for comfort, quiet, good food, and cultured company, this is the place for you.

Answer from OldTurnerInn
Avalon
Hello, thanks for contacting The Old Turner Inn. We do have rooms available that weekend, however we do have a 2 night minimum at this time with any Saturday night stay. So, either Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun. I do happen to have a Saturday only stay available on Sept. 15, if your plans are flexible. Check back with us as it gets closer to the weekend, and we may be able to help. Otherwise, within a couple of weeks of the weekend, the Catalina Chamber of Commerce will have a list of hotels with availability on upcoming weekends - and those with Saturday only stays available. Their number is 310-510-1520. Kathleen

Great place to stay. Can't recommend it enough. Darling B&B, clean and charming. Family raised in Catalina so they know the history. Kathleen provides a full breakfast at 9:00 and a light happy hour at 5:30 with 2 bottles of wine, one red one white. Lots of places to eat, but if you like Italian food, go to the Portofino Villa. Enjoy!
