We took our family for a week in August 2022 to this wonderful hotel. The staff gives the impression of being owner operators as they are extremely friendly and great at what they do. Every morning the cleaning crew is up early disinfecting the property with mops, rakes, brooms and happy faces. Our rooms were perfect and we LOVED the daily comps of wine and cheese, and coffee and breakfast treats. A truly beautiful property filled with families enjoying games, visiting, playing in the grass and just a walk across the street from the beach. Located just a quick walk from the Catalina Express and great luggage service so you don't have to deal with getting to and from the boat. Centrally located to shops, mini golf, restaurants and Descanso Beach. We can't wait to return to this special property. We booked through VisitCatalinaIsland.com and worked with Giovanna who was the absolute BEST at helping us get everything we needed for our group of nine, including a 3 month old baby. The hotel provided a brand new Pack and Play to our rooms. Our hotel desk crew of Julia, Juan, Angel and Marissa were so thoughtful in anything we needed. We can't wait to return and will absolutley be staying at the Pavillion Hotel!!!

My wife and I traveled to Catalina Island last week for 4 nights at the Pavilion hotel. From the moment of dropping our luggage off to picking it up, everything was handled very professionally and accomodating. When we arrived on the ferry we dropped our luggage off with David just a few steps from the ferry. He was very easy to find with a sign for luggage dropoff for the Pavilion and Atwater hotels. He showed us right where the hotel was and we were able to walk there in about 5 minutes. Check in was handled by Juan and very efficient. He told us there was a bottle of wine waiting in the room for us and if we did not like it we could exchange and even get more bottles. This was because in the current Covid situation, they are not doing their wine and cheese event each night. He also informed us that due to also not offering breakfast that we had a $40/night credit which was applied to our accout to use at Descanso beach club or Avalon Bistro. We chose to have a breakfast sandwich the next day at the Bistro and then were able to use the rest of our money for lunch and drinks at Descanso Beach since the beach club is only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday's and we would not get a chance to do that. We also had the glassbottom boat tour included as well which was very nice as well. We did the flying fish tour and the day trip to Two Harbors on our own. Highly recommend going to Two Harbors for a nice relaxing afternoon on a better beach that what is in Avalon. Now onto the staff: David is the bell/concierge who took care of our luggage. He also got us additional bottles of wine with no charge due to the cancellation of the wine and cheese events each night. He also directed us on restautrants and even brought us an additiona bucket of ice while we were sitting out in the beautiful garden area. He is very efficient and always has a smile on his face even though he is working his butt off all day. Tiffany also works at the front desk and booked our excursions for us even getting us a 10% discount. She gave us 10% discount cards to use at a couple of restaurants. She was always a delight to work with and never led us wrong. As mentioned before, there is a beautiful garden area and also a fire pit which is very nice to sit an enjoy on the cool evenings. Based on the covid situation, they were definitely taking this seriously and always cleaning. You could smell the fresh scent of cleaning products many times as the housekeeping staff was cleaning. Great location, amazing staff and beautiful grounds and as they say only 14 steps from the beach even though the beach is not what I pictured.

Our family has stayed in many Avalon hotels over the years, but the location of this one, right on the harbor, is exceptional. The room was not particularly spacious, but adequately so for tightly packed Avalon (and worthily designed as such to protect the surrounding wilderness). The King bed was comfortable. The lodging may seem pricey at first, until you realize it comes with amenities like late afternoon wine and cheese, a high-quality morning buffet at the nearby Avalon Grille, Casino passes, etc. On balance, it turns out to be a genuine bargain!

Let me make this as fair and accurate as possible.
I came to Catalina for an anniversary trip with my girlfriend.

This is a nice enough and quaint feeling hotel, but for $450 a night one would expect more than you might find here.

Firstly, I paid this price for the top listed room: a 350 square foot king room with a patio. For perspective, at this time you could buy a 1.5 thousand square foot room at the Bellagio in Los Vegas for around the same price. That being said I realize we are in a small island city and that you may have to take what you can get, but the price is still steep.

On top of this, upon arrival I found that this is not in fact the best room they offer, and that there are actually suites upstairs that were unlisted/ unavailable to me.

Also upon arrival we were notified that one of their few amenities listed: free bike rentals for 2 hours, were not available.

The available amenities that we did receive were a small plate of mini wines and cheese in the evening, and a normal American style breakfast in the morning, similar to one that you would find at any decent hotel. They also claim that you receive admission to the Descanso Beach Club when buying a room as if it is a special deal, but the regular admission is only 2 dollars, and they were not even charging it at the time.

There is also no room service available at any time other than breakfast, which slightly baffles me due to the reputation of the hotel.

Small grievances: They got my name wrong on my check-in text notification, we had to wait for at least 10 minutes at an empty front desk once we were called in for check-in, and the ice machine was not in service.

In all fairness, the rooms were very clean and sanitized/ appealing given their size, and the property is aesthetic, modern and cozy.

Mr. David meadows on the boat when we arrived in Avalon. He took care of us for the entire time we were there which was three days and two nights.

He did something extraordinary for my birthday! He knew that it was my birthday weekend and he provided us with champagne wine carrot cake flowers and a gift card!

Also Ms. Lisa is super cool.

We did ask for late check out that day because our boat to come back wasn't until 7:00 PM.

They would not allow it due to the coronavirus. Although they normally would have they explain to us that they need an extra several hours to sterilize each room. I love that!

The room was great the property was beautiful, and the staff was amazing!

If David were one of my employees, there is nothing I wouldn't do to keep him!

Catalina island is a beautiful place to visit with a lot of outdoor/water sports activities, great for summer and family especially during the pandemic. The hotel is at the center of the Avalon, walking distance from the Catalina express dock, pier, Casino, and the beach. The hotel provides many precaution to ensure every guest is safe. I know they are doing their best. However, the hotel needs to be remodeled and renovated bcoz the rooms are so old. I think it’s a little overpriced for the poor quality of the furnitures, rusted refrigerator, old style coffee maker, etc. When I book the hotel, I was expecting the price would match the quality of the room thinking the picture online might be old pictures.

The hotel provides $40 food and beverage credit per night is a plus but selection is limited to breakfast and limited restaurants.

The biggest bummer was no internet access. On the second day after we arrived, the whole internet server in the hotel was down for the entire time of our stay (4 days). We cannot book any excursions during our stay. Kids can’t log on for online class. It was a hectic bcoz we had to hop to diff restaurants and local library to “borrow” the wi fi access. The biggest bummer is we couldn’t book any activities bcoz the whole island is under the management of Catalina Island company. Once their server is down, the whole island activity basically shut down too! Other activities from the private companies are still running but most of fun activities such as zip lining and aerial adventure were under Catalina island company.
If you can predict your schedule, I would suggest to book the excursion ahead before your arrival. The server on the island is very unpredictable and unstable. Bring your hotspot if you have It.

I will not be coming back to Pavilion but would definitely try the hotel Atwater which is fully renovated hotel also in walking distance to the beach.

This hotel is very close to the Catalina Express, we arrived early in the morning and were able to check-in early. The staff was very informative and friendly. We were able to borrow their bikes to ride around the island. Later on came back for their wine and cheese hour. The wine was delicious and they had a big variety. Overall that $30 fee is so worth if for what you get including the breakfast. Will definitely stay here again.

The amenities were great. Every morning we had a complimentary ($19.95 to public) hot breakfast buffet. Every afternoon from 4:30 to 5:30 the hotel provided wine and cheese in a beautiful room to be consumed there or taken out into the gardens with a beach side view. We want to give a special shout out to Tiffany, who presided at two of our wine and cheese tastings. The cheeses were outstanding as were the wines. See two photos below.

Come for the service and location , they are really kind and accommodating even in a covid world.

You get a $40 per night food credit to the beach club (about 10min walk away) or the grill (around the corner). Generous offer to balance no breakfast due to covid. We didn’t love either restaurant though and ended up doing a Vons breaky.

Afternoon wine and cheese is also off, but you do get a bottle of wine (or your choice) in your room. The grounds are great and we enjoyed both some drinks and take away in the garden and also the pavilion.

The room is older but seems par for the area.

Our first trip to Catalina so we don’t have a lot to compare to.

Ahh, the top rated hotel in Avalon. I thought that I could not go wrong! Maybe we came at an off time, but it wasn’t as great as I’d hoped it would be. Several issues along the way.

Negatives:

We were unable to get into our room with the key cards they gave us at check-in. My husband went to get more, and we had the same issue again. They came to let us in and fixed the issue later.

The makeup mirror light was also out, and they replaced it with a new one also. We had to call them twice to get them to fix it finally.

Temperature in the room is all over the place with the thermostat, and it’s very humid. If your hair is prone to frizz and looking too voluminous, this isn’t the hotel for you.

The bathroom door squeaks, which is something they should fix to avoid waking your sleeping partner.

The sink is terrible and sprays everywhere if you turn it on as you would any other sink.

Some gross and rude guests. People arguing with each other over nonsense, people letting their children walk around naked (who are old enough that it’s really inappropriate). And we woke up to screaming, running, and door slamming children next door. Not exactly the place for couples or anyone trying to enjoy a nice rest.

The complimentary wine and cheese is terrible. We stayed two nights and didn’t even return to redeem our second vouchers. So gross.

Positives:

In terms of the room itself, it’s small but upscale. The bed and pillows were very comfortable, so no complaints there. Shower was fine. The bathroom sink has a makeup mirror and plenty of counter space.

Coffee machine is nice with Starbucks and high quality creamer.

They also have a safe in the room.

I really liked the fire pit they had going at night. Some friendly people invited us to join them, which was nice.

Location is awesome, and it’s easy to walk around and access your room easily.

Overall, some positives and some negatives. Hence the three star review. All in all, we’d check out the Hamilton vacation rental spot on the hill next time.

Hello. I'm not certain why this hotel has recent negative reviews. I say this because my family of four which includes twin 18 kids had a fabulous stay at this resort. We booked a king room for us and a double room for our twins. We were upstairs snd our kids downstairs just a few doors down. Both room were adorable and quite large. Also, bed, bedding, in room amenities were quite appropriate for the daily rate. The hotel is a bit older, but recent reno's make it feel newer. Yes, you can hear other guests as they walk by, but who cares. The hotel offers an amazing breakfast and cocktail hour as well as free use of bicycles. Big bonus is how close it is to the harbor. No need to rent carts or schedule a ride to the hotel. It took us less than 10 min with to walk to the resort. Oh, super duper bonus- hotel delivers your bags to your room from the ferry. Awesome!!!! As for another suggestion, Mt Ada on the hill is a gem. However, it only has 6 rooms I believe. So, if your looking for more than 6 rooms for your weekend away, try The Pavilion. You won't be disappointed. Ps. There are fabulous timeshares up in the hill, yet they are a bit of a drive to get back and forth.

Can someone tell me what the difference between the standard, superior and premier rooms are?
Answer from dandksmommy
Fair Oaks, California79 helpful votes
Well, we booked both a standard double for our kids snd a superior king for us and let me tell you we were not disappointed that the premier room was not available. Most likely because we have no experience with that accommodation. The standard double room was beautiful with nice comfy beds and great linens. It was at the back of the property on the bottom floor which in our mind was a bonus. No noise!!!! The room itself was a bit dark, but my kids didn't notice. The patio in front was tiny, but my kids didn't care. As for our king room it was lovely. Great bed, linens, lighting, yet the bath needed a lil updating. Otherwise, we LOVE!!!! The Pavilion not only for the rooms but also for the amazing breakfast and cocktail hour.
