We thoroughly enjoyed our 6-night stay in this cozy & charming cottage. It is quite compact, but carefully-planned & decorated & we were very comfortable during our stay. While central Arcata is nearby, the location is very quiet, great for those of us who are light sleepers (the very comfortable bed helped too). Though we stayed just after the county again permitted short-term rentals & only communicated with the owner by message & phone, we were in good hands, with all inquiries addressed promptly & helpfully.

When I have to be in the area near Eureka for my work, I arrange it to stay here.
The accommodations are charming with all essential needs met ( internet, location, amenities).

The hosts are always welcoming with assured cleanliness, quiet privacy, and yet offer information about the beautiful Redwoods and nature surrounding this “find”.

The Rose Court Cottage was incredible! While traveling on business, I usually end up in the "Anytown, USA" hotels and motels, but this time, what a difference! The cottage is a santuary for the weary business traveler, conveniently located in the heart of beautiful Arcata, yet protected from the street noise. I felt like I was at home. The bed is so comfortable, internet access in the room, a fridge for the fabulous leftovers from the area restaraunts, and darling decorations that send a sense of calmness throughout your entire body. Christy was a wonderful hostess! Homemade treats bedside each night, and a perfectly made room upon return at the end of the day. I would recommend this lodging experience to anyone, business or otherwise. I truly considered staying permanently!

I found this using trip advisor and was not disappointed. Christy is a wonderful chef and host. She made special arrangements to accommodate my Celiac gluten intolerance. We had delightful egg dish the first morning, amazing french toast the second morning, terrific bagels made with all local toppings from farmers market. Looking forward to this mornings cuisine, what ever it may be. We booked 6 nights here and have enjoyed every minute of it. Very quiet, restful location within minutes walk of downtown and everything you could need. A great central place to stay to experience the Gentle Giant Redwood Forests all within an hours reach from here. Even the local forest is impressive. Many many things to see and do here. Wouldn't hesitate to come back. Christy is a very knowledgeable person to get information about the local attractions, she was also very sensitive and attentive to our inquiries.

I have traveled the north coast for many years, both for business and pleasure.
What a special find, Rose Court Cottage is for me.

When I travel for business, I find the quiet and comfort of Rose Court Cottage welcoming after a long drive and long days. The care taken in the decor, little touches to make one feel at home, and warmth from the proprietor makes for planning to return! With a pained lower back, a good bed is most important to me! I LOVE this bed! A small kitchen area, clean bathroom, the important things we need especially when trying to get the most out of your travel budget.

After many stays for business from 2004 on, I finally planned a pleasure trip with my significant other to the Giant Trees and unique nature trails of the Lost Coast.

Arriving this past December, even with the beauty of nature calling, WE DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE ROOM! Cozy, warm, music, (t.v. if you want it!), I highly recommend this charming secret if you are anywhere near Arcata.

Sorry, but this is not a place I would ever stay again. We booked for two nights (unfortunately) and when we first walked into the cottage I was overwhelmed with the smell of a cold, damp place--mildew and mold. We were headed to a wedding and didn't have time to make adjustments to our stay otherwise I would have cancelled and gone elsewhere. We tried to air the room and cover it up with sprays, but to no avail. It was difficult to sleep with the sheets having to be over my nose and mouth so I wouldn't have to breathe the smell. The sheets were clean and so was the cottage, but if you like a sunny room, this is not it. My husband and I felt like we were mushrooms by the time we left and my clothes smelled from having been in the room for two days. We were sorely disappointed and were happy to leave. We have learned our lesson. Hope you will too before you book!

Response from lodgingmaven, owner/host at Rose Court Cottage
Responded Feb 14, 2009
The comfort and happiness of guests is my number one priority at Rose Court Cottage and has been since I opened in November 2003. I have been fortunate to maintain a high occupancy rate here, (in 2008, 26 nights booked in July, 30 in August, etc.) and to have accommodated pleased customers, prior to and following the arrival of BandBlover5, based upon my interactions with guests, positive Comment Cards they have provided, and glowing comments they have written in my guest book. I had not visited this website for quite a while, so was surprised and saddened to see the unkind review posted on July 31, 2008 by BandBlover5. I distinctly remember the couple who came over from the central valley to attend a July wedding in Arcata; in the interaction we shared, I definitely sensed some sort of negative energy from BandBlover5. Having recently read her review, her negative energy is now explained. I was on property while she was here and she could have approached me right after I checked them in if she was "overwhelmed" by anything having to do with the cottage. During their stay, I had no idea that BandBlover5 and her husband were displeased. She made no complaint to me nor left written feedback on the in-room Guest Comment Card. Countless guests had come and gone during a very busy summer who appeared pleased with their experience here. I have never before received feedback such as hers, but with me, the customer comes first, and had I known, I would absolutely have made certain that they received satisfaction. If they wished to remain at Rose Court Cottage, I would have discounted their nightly rate as a good will gesture, or if they opted not to stay because they were dissatisfied, they would not have been charged for the cancelled nights, or I could have attempted to move them to another of my six Arcata Stay accommodations. She characterized Rose Court Cottage as "small, cold, and moldy" and indicated low ratings for front desk, room, cleanliness, and service. There is no front desk here; I check guests in personally. She described the cottage saying "sheets were clean and so was the cottage," thus contradicting the low rating for cleanliness. I know the cottage was clean, because it is inspected prior to every check in and if something is not right, it is made right. They opted out of breakfast but they did receive the attention and service afforded all guests which include having a friendly and gracious host, making up the room daily, and providing home baked cookies and chocolates. On-line photos are unenhanced and accurately reflect the size and layout of the cottage; "cozy" describes the space on the website. If she anticipated that the cottage should be a larger "sunnier" space than depicted, I am sorry for her disappointment, but it is just as it appears on the internet. Coming from the triple digit heat of California's central valley, perhaps the guests were chilly on Humboldt Bay with our summer temperatures in the 60's and sun masked by our typical coastal fog. If it was overcast or foggy and they desired to be warmer and drier, the forced air heater and electric fireplace would have heated the space in minutes. In regards to mustiness or mold she perceived, though I did not perceive it myself, I did investigate that issue, whether real or imagined, in an effort to take cautionary measures for guests who may have hyper-sensitivities. I had the shower fan replaced, the forced air heating system inspected, and purchased a de-humidifier to draw moisture from the air. I cleaned all surfaces and furnishings, and washed all textiles, draperies, and slipcovers. As an additional measure to ward off any potential for mustiness, I used tea tree oil, an organic mildew repellant, to treat every surface that was treatable, including the windows, all woodwork and wood furniture, the sofa/sofa bed, and queen bed frame, box spring, and mattress, which I then encased in anti-allergy zippered enclosures. The cottage thermostat is also now set at a higher resting temperature. Dealing with the pervasive dampness in Humboldt County (redwoods thrive in a rain forest), requires diligence, and I am confident about the measures I have taken to ensure the comfort of Rose Court Cottage customers. Though BandBlover5's concerns were not shared with me personally, and I was not afforded the opportunity to address her issues while she was here, once known, I acted upon her feedback because I am committed to providing all of my guests the most enjoyable lodging experience possible.

Staying at Rose Court Cottage was the only planned aspect of our week-long vacation. Initially lured by a well-designed website, our expectations were far exceeded. Lushly fragrant heirloom roses were in full bloom in the courtyard leading up to the cottage. Every morning as we departed for our adventures, and every evening as we returned to our cosy cottage, I couldn't help but stop to draw in their elegant aroma. Fresh flowers from the garden were also lovingly arranged in hanging vases cleverly placed on both sides of a hand-painted mirror inside. Absolutely every detail was thoughtfully anticipated by the proprietor. Upon our arrival, Christy showed us all of the amenities- everything we could possibly need. Arts and Crafts architectural details and furnishings show the hand of an artist, while providing essential functions of a very comfortable bed and intimate spaces for eating and reading. Books on a variety of topics were arranged on a shelf above a comfortable little couch. I enjoyed reading about local history, and after throughly devouring the book "Locally Delicious: Recipes and Resources for Eating on the North Coast," decided I must purchase my own copy at "The Garden Gate," a lovely shop in the center of town. A fully stocked kitchenette enabled us to prepare a few meals for our road trips during our extended stay. Wildberries Market, featuring organic and local food, was just down the street from Rose Court Cottage. Arcata Scoop, a very special organic ice cream shop that we frequented at least 1.5 times per day, was an easy 5 minute walk away. Arcata Square in the center of town was the site of the weekly Farmer's Market- an absolutely sensual abundance of the most beautiful organic produce, baked goods, and local foods imaginable. Upon Christy's friendly suggestions, we took an early evening stroll through The Arcata Community Forest and also discovered the addictive allure of locally produced Cypress Grove goat cheeses. For less than the cost of a chain hotel room, we were able to enjoy living in a quiet and private space that was clearly designed for comfort, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Our extended stay enabled us to learn so much more about the fascinating community of Arcata and surrounding areas, including its creative entrepreneurs. The only difficult aspect of our stay was leaving!

I really enjoyed staying in this beautiful little place in Arcata, CA - the flowers/roses surrounding the place were amazing and made for a relaxing time in the courtyard over coffee as the sun rose or beer in the evening. Close to everything but a quiet nook to get some sleep on the amazingly comfortable bed. The little place had everything I needed with added touches from the wonderful Christie who owns the place! I would recommend to any one or a couple who wants a quiet, relaxing, comforting place to stay and walk all over town from the convenient location!

Great little cottage, a perfect gem with lots of fun details and touches, great hospitality and a friendly, helpful host. All we could want in an accommodation. The cottage is private and very quiet, and the entry courtyard is filled with roses and fountains and beautiful plantings.

Rose Court Cottage is a little jewel conveniently located in downtown Arcata, city of gardens. We only stayed one night, but are plotting our return, especially given that the place is dog-friendly!

The proprietor is very friendly, room is thoughtfully decorated, bed is among the most comfortable I've ever slept in(including my own), room is quiet, breakfast is very good. And there's even a sign suggesting customers drink local Mad River water, instead of the bottled crap. Made my day.
