Friendly hotel with clean and nicely furnished rooms. Great location close to the beach. Good quality mattresses and bedding. The breakfast room was nice and they had locally roasted coffee. All in all great value for money.

I stayed at the Rio Sands often with my family when I was younger and had incredible memories of a quaint hotel with a great location close to my favorite beach. I brought my husband to see the area and, of course, had to book a room in the same hotel I had loved so much years before. We were hoping to make it a frequent vacation spot, but the hotel that we checked into this week was significantly different from that of my memories. The first thing that greeted us in our room was a wiry, curly hair in the middle of a pillow. After replacing it with a few pillows we had brought along with us, we thought we could move past the incident. But, as we unpacked our belongings, something caught our eye from under the bed: a crumpled condom wrapper. Needless to say, between the wrapper, the hair on the bed and a dirty-appearing shower (also featuring several previous guests’ hairs), we were very unhappy with our room’s cleanliness. Unluckily, our first night at the hotel was the night Aptos was affected by the PG&E power cuts. We understand that was a fluke the hotel was not in control of, however, we were left in a freezing cold and dark room with only a small flashlight we signed out from the front desk (and, yes, we paid full price for it). We also were left without a way to contact the front desk with the aforementioned problems with our room. Frankly, the only good part of our stay was the time outside of the hotel room on the beach. The worst part was that our short stay ruined all of my favorite memories of staying at the Rio Sands. I won’t be returning.

We have had a heat wave in the central valley, so we decided last minute to go to the coast. We booked Rio Sands and it was the perfect place for a few days away from the heat. We booked a family suite which has a queen bed & 2 bunkbeds. The kids room with bunkbeds had a door that blocked them off from the parents. They could watch TV or play without bothering us. It was nice for us to have some privacy. The room also a kitchen with a large fridge, stove, microwave. It would have been perfect for a little bit longer stay too. The location was sooooo perfect for our family. We could walk to the beach in just a few minutes. There is also a few restaurants and a little corner market. We will definitely come back here again!!

We are here at the moment. Our check in went smoothly and initially we were ok with the room despite its worn appearance. We put our bags up and took a walk on the beach and went to dinner. After dinner, we came back to the room and began to figure out the room’s layout and how to work the AC, etc. Well, to our surprise, there is NO AC. It’s mid-August. So height of the summer. Thinking I must be missing something, I called the front desk. A different employee was working at this point and she was very unsympathetic to my surprise and discomfort about leaving our rooms windows and doors open to the the outside. I hung up the phone and tried to figure out how to make this work. But as I sat there trying to figure out how we were going to get comfortable here, people are strolling by our “front” and “back” doors. It’s very disconcerting. Let me explain..... The hotel is really a motel. It’s a two story structure with exterior doors that lead directly outside. We are in a ground floor room with our front door leading straight out to the street and the back door/lanai (which has a sliding glass door with a screen) is open to anyone that wants to walk by. There’s no way we feel safe leaving our doors or windows open in this situation. The website should clearly state that the rooms do NOT have AC, so you will have to sleep with your windows and doors open to have air circulation in your room. So our choices are 1) leave our windows and back door open and worry all night about safety, or 2) close it all up and feel safer, but sweat in the heat all night. Apparently there are fans they loan out to guests but they are all gone. Maybe the hotel should keep enough fans to accommodate EVERY room? After speaking with the front desk a second time, and explaining how uncomfortable and unsafe we feel, I had to ask several times if there was anything else we could do to alleviate the situation. At that point, we were finally offered a fan from housekeeping. I’m not sure what this fan is used for, but it has so much dust in it, it’s like an allergen attack waiting to happen. I am glad to have it, but it’s really not an ideal fix. Overall, I’m very disappointed in this hotel. All in, we are paying about $300/night for our room and at that rate, I would have hoped for a little nicer situation. The best thing I can say about the hotel is it’s very close to the beach. You can walk there. Other than that, the parking is tight and sparse, the room is very dated, especially the bathroom, and the AC situation is the nail in the coffin for me. I would NOT recommend this hotel.

I have stayed at the Rio Sands before and I just love the location, staff, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. I have been in a room with my best friend and my 3 nieces and there was plenty of room the kitchen is a big help with picky eaters.
