I have been to WCL 5 times now, and each time my experience has been wonderful! The fishing is world class, the guides are experienced and knowledgeable about the fishery and the area, the food is amazing, (prime rib and king crab on Saturday nights! What?!) and nothing compares to Whaler's Cove hospitality! I even surprised my wife one year and flew her up as well! it was her first time on a float plane, first time halibut fishing, and our guide had her on the fish almost immediately! We even visited the Baranoff hot springs and had a wonderful time there as well. Make sure to try it out if you like HOT hotsprings!
Amazing views, amazing fishing, amazing people (love you Mark & Christine!), what more can I say!? If you have never experienced Alaska, you owe it to yourself to experience it with Whaler's Cove Lodge! You won't be disappointed!

We just returned home from a true bucket list trip at Whalers Cove Lodge in Angoon, Alaska. We don’t know what was better the service from the staff crew at the lodge or the fishing. We caught several halibut over 50 pounds'. The staff crew are prompt in finding the answers when they are asked questions they don’t know and are eager to help with any request, small or large. The meals were first rate exceeding the quality of the food we ate in Juneau before flying in to the lodge. The captains are also top notch and truly try to catch the types of fish you want. The captains allow you to participate in setting out the lines or you can sit back and wait for the fish to bite then reel them in. The rooms are great with many having a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains on Admiralty Island right from the decks outside your room. You can also see eagles sometimes whales sea lions and sea otters in the bay in front of the lodge. If you have ever gone on a whale watching trip you can enjoy seeing whales while fishing. This was our second trip to the lodge and we have seen whales breaching and bubble feeding on both trips. Each fishing morning starts out with catching herring bait which is also fun all by itself. We anticipated a slight let down in expectations for our second trip but the second trip was even better than the first trip. There is a family like feel with all of the interactions with the staff crew and customers are made to feel like friends.

Traveled to Juneau Alaska. From there we were provided a float plane to Whaler’s Cove Lodge. Upon arrival we were greeted by the crew of the lodge and welcomed to a hot breakfast and then packed our lunch for the first day of fishing. Our boat captain “Dom” was awesome and throughly enjoyed him for our daily fishing trip. The daily fish trips were very eventful, you never know what your going to get, but we pulled up some beautiful Coho “Silver” Salmon, Halibut, Cod, Rock Fish, and a huge skate which is in the Ray family. Dom Released the poor guy to enjoy another day. Totally filled all our fish boxes take home with us. Bonus was lots of humpback whales feeding all around us. Now that is a treat I never get tired of. They are majestic when you watch the bubble feed taking place. Even saw Orcas cruising by. After each day of fishing we had a beautiful cabin overlooking the water to unwind in and relax. Of course the gourmet always had a surprise for dinner. Mark and Kristine Powers, who own the lodge along with their whole staff were so accommodating and we totally recommend Whalers Cove Lodge for a week of fun filled fishing and other activities. They also offer river fishing and kayak fishing. River fishing is awesome, haven’t tried kayaking but those who did, caught some huge fish as well. Can’t say enough about our boat captain “Dom” had some very extraordinary days. Husband Tom had a large cod on his line and then something just took his line almost out to the end. Probably a pretty large Halibut latched onto to the cod, but broke loose after a long and tiring fight. Several times we had 2 halibut on the boat. Happened with the salmon as well. If your looking to go on a great Alaskan fishing trip. You won’t be disappointed. Our trip was August 21 to August 28, 2021. Thank you Mark and Kristine and all the crew for a great time.

+1
Nice to find a place where employees take pride in their work and the customer experience. Primarily oriented to salt water fishing but also offer great fresh water experiences. Great for all ages. Everything from gear to clothing is provided. Boat captains are very knowledgeable and helpful and you will catch a lot of fish. The accommodations were new, clean and well done and the housekeeping staff did a great job. Food was above average but was better when they stuck with local and fresh ingredients and kept it simple. Staff in restaurant/lodge provided great service. Fish processing and packaging was top notch. My box survived a 24 hour trip from the lodge to Phoenix AZ in 110 heat and was still frozen solid when it arrived, packaged, vacuum sealed and individually labeled. If you book, read the materials they provide. They do a great job of telling you everything you need to know and bring in advance.

Outstanding fishing in southeast Alaska. I have been to WCL more than 10 times and it just is the best week of my year. Rustic but beautiful accommodations, friendly and attentive staff, absolutely terrific dining and expert guides who help you fill your freezer with salmon and halibut. You can’t go wrong.

I have to say I have done a lot of traveling, a lot of fishing and had quite a bit of travel experience. This lodge is hands down my favorite experience to date. As a woman that likes to fish I think its worth mentioning that I felt right at home and extremely comfortable with the staff, lodgings and fishing captain. So much so that we have decided to bring our daughters and their husbands back next year!

Just back from a repeat four-day fishing trip at WCL. Both the fish and the weather cooperated. The silvers were running strong, in both salt and fresh water. We also caught plenty of halibut and the other usual deep water fish. The lodge and accommodations are top notch. The staff is first class, very helpful and engaging. You won’t believe the food! All boat captains are experienced and personable. They’ll tailor your day on the water based on your expectations. Top marks in all categories! It would be hard to find a better experience.

Everything I hoped my first fishing trip to Alaska would be - and more! Great communication with Riley in the office to get our spot lined up. Seamless travel details through Ward Air. Arrived on Tuesday morning, shuffled up to the Boot Barn to get our gear and then .... get to the boats and time to get fishing! We were lucky to have amazing weather so that was a bonus. The fishing was great and we will be set for the winter. All of the the staff was amazing start to finish. The lodging superb, great cabins that are clean and well stocked. The food - well if you go hungry there its your own fault! I can't wait to go back again!

We fished the Queen Charlotte Islands the past 2 years and had a wonderful experience and caught lots of Kings, silvers, haluibut, cod and rock fish. We decided to try South East Alaska and found a few good reviews of WCL. I spoke with Alice and explained that we wanted to fish King Salmon, she assured me many times the last two weeks in June are the peak run(which may be true for other areas). In fact she said they were expecting so many kings the limits had been raised to 2/person/day. We had high expectations for Kings. Upon arrival we soon realized after talking to a couple of the guides and guests that they NEVER get a good run of Kings, they may catch some but never consistently. We were pretty disappointed, in fact the week before we were there i don't think any kings were caught, and the week we were there, only 1 king was kept! Unbelievable! Also she said going self guided was great and encouraged and all the staff would help point out where to go and what to do. When we went self guided, NO ONE would tell us where to go or what to do. They said it was against the rules? We caught some small halibut and pacific cod. The lodge and food are sufficient and the staff is nice. Really feel deceived! I'm sure later the silvers would be in and good fishing, but that was never mentioned, just come in June and you can for sure keep 2 kings a day! I'd be careful booking here if your coming Salmon fishing. If you want amazing scenery and wildlife you won't be disappointed.

Responded Nov 2, 2016
Strong Eagle, Thank you for taking the time to place a review. We did have a great King Salmon run in 2015, then 2016 got quiet again! Mother nature does like her cycles with the fish runs! Our year in 2016 was strong for halibut and cod. I apologize for the miscommunication regarding self-guided "guided" trips: Fish and Game are routinely boarding our vessels and monitoring our VHF communications and Facebook page (they are up with the times!), and they even book trips as guests (under cover) to determine that we are truly not coaching any self-guiders. They are very stringent and provide healthy fines for lodges who attempt to subvert the regulations by "quietly guiding" self-guiders. Each year we strive to improve our accommodations, food service, and to bring in crew who excel at providing great customer service. Although we may not have the trophy king run - the fishing less than 1 mile from our dock in mild waters has proven to be consistent for the past 35 years in filling up fish boxes! We hope that you've been able to find a lodge that meets your vacation desires! All the best, Kristine Powers

Rick,
Yes. My wife and I travel from Knoxville to Atlanta where we pick up a flight to Seattle then onto Juneau one day early (Thursday). We then use the next day (Friday) to pick up the beverages we take over to Whalers Cove (you can only bring alcoholic beverages with you - you cannot buy them there). We also go to downtown Juneau for sightseeing and eating at the "Hangar" a great restaurant right on the pier where the sea planes take off and land. We usually rent a car for the day to take these trips. You can also drive to the Mendenhall Glacier. They have a great visitor center and you can walk out and see the glacier up front an personal. We stay at the Juneau Travelodge which is within walking distance of the airport. We then get picked up at the Travelodge early Saturday morning (around 4:30AM) by a Whalers Cove staff person for a bus ride to the ferry terminal. We then take a 3 hr. ferry ride to the lodge. We fish for 7 days. We return from Whalers Cove lodge on the same ferry that took us over who are bringing in the next weeks fishermen. We arrive back at the ferry terminal and take a bus (along with fish who are loaded onto a truck) back to the airport where we catch a 3pm flight back to Seattle where we spend the night and then fly home the next day (Sunday). So, if you take the 7 day trip you have no problem getting a flight back to Seattle. I would highly recommend going to Juneau one day early to protect your trip in case of bad weather of a flight cancellation. Hope this helps
