The location is bit far from the center city, great backyard, friendly host. We ordered a double layer bed, private room. Room is bit old and dirty, bed is not comfy, and the noise from the stairs and neighbors are bit loud.
Located right next to the train station, this hostel offers usual facilities that hostel offers. There is parking in the street facing the hostel at night and there is a parking lot (you have to pay to stay there) next to the train station during day time. The place was clean, including the dorms which was equiped with a/c. I"d recommend this place to friends / familly.
My son & I stayed here. It is very laid back and casual. The whole place smells like Marijuana. The bunks were comfortable, but the people in the other bunks were moving around & getting up & down all night. Next time, I would ask for a private room, not a dorm room. The bathrooms were great. The employees were friendly.
Having found Hilltop Hostel a couple of years ago, it has become my go-to choice for trips to D.C. Being right across the street from the Metro stop means complete accessibility to downtown, having Busboys & Poets one block up means that meals are excellent (kitchen facilities, of course, and a wealth of take-out/local restaurant menus posted, including local tavern that offers a discount, so many solutions available for longer stays—B&P is not cheap, but high quality and very socially responsible, so the splurge feels good!) Staff has been very friendly, unlike another reviewer, I did see the cash-only notice prominent in the terms when I reserved (and the deposit was so minimal on the card!) We often sit in the common dining area, good conversations with other guests, staff; nice notebook of Takoma Park history—all in all, a nice home-away-from-home. The only thing that could be improved is the common computer; it can be difficult to use, slow connection. Also, we older folks can find bunk beds with straight-up ladders difficult, but they are standard in dorms, not a unique problem. (External and internal stairs should be noted for those with mobility issues.)…
This should have been a nice stay. I tried to check in with a 60ish man, when a woman of the same age burst into the office shrieking "why have I been called over?" She ignored my attempts to check in while yelling at her friend about other issues, ignored me until I stated "I see on this piece of paper you have me in room 4," where at she howled that I was in room five. When I directed her attention to the piece of paper upon which either she or her friend had scribbled, she ungraciously ignored me again. A simple, "I am sorry," would have sufficed. Extraordinarily unprofessional behavior. I later sent a note suggestion that Van Halen should not, in fact, be blared out of the office at all hours into the common room, and the same individual wrote back in a huff stating that someone always manned the office (untrue; it is usually closed) and that "no one has ever had a problem with this [soi-disant] music." Despite the great location and the price, I will never stay here again due to the rudeness of this person who is some type of manager. If you want to shriek randomly and vent your negative emotions, please don't do it in front of customers, as you won't have repeat customers.…
