The Sofitel is charming and situated in a beautiful part of Washington DC. Restaurants and monuments are easily within walking distance. There is a very European feel to the hotel and staff were welcoming and helpful. There is a lovely bar and restaurant on premises. Nous reviendrons❤️

Checked into this hotel and the person checking us in was new and did not even know the address of the hotel. They were very kind to upgrade our rooms. Upon entering the rooms after a 12 hour drive it was clean, but the lock on the door was hanging off the wood. The front desk answered and took the order for room service and also for housekeeping. We ordered room service and never received our full order and when called back still never came. There was one employee that was very helpful with everything and that was Lindze. She was the most helpful with everything. We really appreciated her. The food was just fair and the housekeeping was just fair. Bed was comfortable and the halls need an update too. I am not sure if I would stay there again.

Having stayed in many Sofitels around the world, and acquired Diamond ALL status along the way, it's fair to say we have good idea of what the Sofitel brand involves. Firstly, the positives: *The hotel is well located. It's within a few minutes walk to The White House and general strip of monuments and museums along 'the mall'. Metro station is around the corner, and things are very easily accessible so makes the hotel a good base to explore the city. It's in a business district so not a great deal or restaurants in the immediate area. *The bed was, as expected, extremely comfortable and served to provide 4 amazing nights of sleep. We had the junior suite which was equipped with a mini fridge (no mini bar!), nespresso machine, plenty of power outlets (including by the bed) and 2 large TVs. The rain shower was lovely. Views were of the internal courtyard so nothing to see. That is really where it ends, as the negatives truly detracted from the overall experience. Especially considering the room rates are $300-400 a night! The negatives: *This is suppose to be a luxury hotel, yet rooms are serviced with paper cups and cheap plastic water bottles. *Breakfast menu is a la carte, and not buffet style. Each food/beverage is itemised with a price. Where breakfast is included/pre-paid us part of the room, it is only possible for guests to have 4 options from the menu with a cold and hot beverage. That's it! Anything else from the menu, or a substitute (i.e switching croissants for toast) is chargeable. It's certainly not worth paying the $35 daily add on per guest for breakfast when reserving the room, and I would recommend The Corner Bakery a short 5mins walk which has more options at a fraction of the cost! The biggest let down was the mandatory "guest amenity" fee of $30 + TAX per night. This was not mentioned in the initial reservation, and only when you get to the hotel does it come to light. In essence, it felt like a bit of a trap. What is it? For a daily £30+tax fee you get: *Coffee/Tea in the hotel lobby every morning - this is a communal space, and the first time I have seen a hotel charge guests for this. Anyone from the streets can walk in and help themselves at the cost of guests. Needless to say we ensured the friends that we were visiting in DC, we invited to help themselves too! *Water in the hotel lobby every evening - again, this is a communal space, and first time I have seen a hotel charge guests for this. *Bottled water in the room - surely this is standard service for room service? But no, this hotel charges guests for cheap plastic bottled water in the room. *Handling packages - again, one would think this is surely a standard service for a hotel. Whether you use it or not, guests are charged for it. *Access to the gym - again, another service you would think is part of the room reservation. Guests are charged whether or not they use the gym. *High speed Internet - the standard free 5mbps wifi, is upgraded to a whopping 10mps! ALL status members are supposed to get this inclusive of member benefits, but it's not honored and is included as part of the $30 "guest amenity" fee. It's clearly a side hustle netting the hotel at least $6000 daily for services most guests will not use, and charging for things that would be "standard" in any hotel, luxury or otherwise. I wouldn't be surprised if the 'guest amenity' is increased in time, and 'services' expanded to charge guests for using the elevators, servicing the communal toilets in the lobby or even the use of the power outlets in the room!! If you have never stayed in a Sofitel, then i can imagine this hotel will be a good experience. For the seasoned Sofitel traveler, with this hotel, you are paying a premium for the location primarily as they have fallen short of the Sofitel brand and services in general. I had reached out to Karla the GM on 13th Aug via h3293-am1@sofitel.com, expressing all of the above, but received no response. I have noticed some reviews do highlight the above too, and responses from the hotel has been that they will review to improve things... clearly standard copy&paste response with no real intention to improve the guest experience as same niggles present several months later. If I were to be in DC again, I would likely be staying at the Fairmont instead.

Response from Karla Erales, General Manager at Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square Hotel
Responded 4 weeks ago
Dear Shreebo, I want to start by thanking you for taking the time to provide a thorough review of your experience at Sofitel DC. While it is certainly not the experience we wanted you to have, the points you bring up are very helpful for us and do not go amiss. First with the positive, I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed the Sofitel Bed, a good night's sleep is definitely a priority when away from home. Also, we are very fortunate to have our hotel so ideally situated and this definitely plays an important role while visiting the city. Now with the not so positive, I have gone over the different points you have mentioned with our Executive Team so that we can address each one in the most relevant way. We are currently in the process of revamping our offerings which will also include a change in coffee cups currently in the rooms and with the exciting news that we will also be refreshing our Bar and Brasserie in the months to come. While we do not offer buffets, we are looking at different ways to improve and extend the selections offered in all of the meal periods so that you do not feel limited in your choices nor chose to visit another location. The Guest Amenity Fee is looked at frequently and amended so that we can include services that are important to our guest and we look at feedback very closely in order to make changes where needed. We have added some wellness inclusions such as Yoga classes as well as guided morning runs along the monuments and will also be including additional equipment in the Fitness Center. There are more changes to come that I'm sure will be enjoyed and I can assure you that this is not a cut and paste response, we value your comments. I hope you will also accept my sincere apology for the delay in contacting you, unfortunately the e mail address used is not the right one, I can be reached at Karla.Erales@Sofitel.com and would be very happy to continue communication with you if you would like. It would be wonderful to be given the opportunity to welcome you back and provide you with the Sofitel experience you have always enjoyed, please do reach out to me personally should your travels bring you to DC again. Sincerely grateful, Karla

I didn't catch everyone's names but I'd like to give a big shout out to all of the staff because they were all so professional and welcoming. Especially Tray my valet guy, and Chris/Marina/Mark with banquets!

I was in and out of DC for a business meeting, arriving in the evening and literally left nearly 14 hours later. I selected the Sofitel DC due to its proximity to my meeting and GLAD I did. The front desk staff were super friendly and provided me with an upgrade. My room, a king, was clean, great bed and pillows, large bathroom with good amenities though oddly, an iron but no ironing board. I ordered room service for both dinner and breakfast so I can't comment on the onsite facilities but they looked nice when I walked by. Room service was quick and the staff that delivered it friendly. While I didn't get to enjoy the neighborhood, it was a great location and something I would definitely consider the next time I am in town and have some personal time to explore. The one thing of note, DC is still very empty likely due to remote workers and it was August (a Wednesday) and session was out for U.S. elected leaders. I walked to my morning meeting and was literally the only person on the street for blocks. A bit bizarre but I'm not complaining. Anyway....nice stay at Sofitel and I would recommend it, especially for a business trip.

We could not have asked for a better venue and experience. The Sofitel Washington DC was amazing! The coordination was smooth and almost effortless before the ceremony, and the staff were super helpful and accommodated anything we needed. The hotel is a fantastic venue with a location that can't be beat. All of our guests commented that the food was fantastic! The venue has so many built in picture taking spaces and our guest loved the ability to sit on the patio, lounge in the bar, or dance the night away! We could not have asked for a better experience for our big day! Thank you Sofitel and Sofitel staff!

Definitely it is not a 5 star hotel as some mention. I would give 4 star but 3 fits also. What I didn't like: No concierge or help for visitors. Even a cheap city map they didn't have, had to go to another hotel and beg for one. Restaurant reservations they Google, they are not able to make a call so it is faster to do it ourselves. Compulsory 30usd tax including telephone calls, higher speed internet that most of times doesn't work, 2 X 0,50 cents water bottles, coffee and tea at the lobby, package handling (it was useful for me, but any other hotel do that for free, except Loews or Hilton), and other things most guests don't use. No views (luxury and higher have views to a building other side of the street, superior room has a view to a wall and back of another very close building, standard room probably hasn't a window), Bathroom toiletries are different brands each so shower will make you smell like a fruit salad, They probably don't use a softener when washing towels (or softener is not working), All glasses are the cheapest roadside hotel plastic or paper cups. Maybe they are still very worried about covid but not about convenience or confort. If using plastic glasses is obligatory they could use nice cups as this is supposed to be an elegant hotel, but the cup is the same we find in 1 or 2 star hotels, or hospitals. Minibar doesn't cool down. Probably it only freezes when we request it to be filled but I had some beverages I wanted to cool for my city walk and couldn't do that. When I flushed toilet during the night I believe I woke up the entire floor. It makes an incredible noise. What I liked: Reception staff is very friendly, Location is very nice, not far from anywhere and next door to the White House and less than 20 minutes to the museums. Blackout curtains in the room really work. Shower is good, pillows and bed are comfortable, air conditioning works. Cleanliness and cleaning service. Very good. Room size is perfect. Valet staff is friendly and prompt (don't forget it costs 60usd per day)

The hotel was wonderful in every way and we want to thank the management and staff for providing us with a perfect long weekend from beginning to end. Here's what we experienced: >As we drove up to the hotel, we were greeted by a kind and friendly valet (Mazimba) who both brought our suitcases, etc. to our room and quickly arranged for our car to be parked. He helped us throughout our stay and we enjoyed seeing him every time. And when we needed our car during the stay, we could use the phone system to quickly arrange for our car to be brought out... and it was right outside the hotel at the requested time. Everything about the valet service was close to perfect. >A quick, easy and friendly check in, even thought the hotel was full and very busy. Every encounter with the front desk was equally warm, professional and very helpful. Each person went the extra mile! >The cleanest hotel room we have seen in years! You could probably 'eat off the floor' if you wanted to. Every surface in the room was spotless and the furniture was in perfect shape. There was no sign of degrading or mold in the bathroom, which had a shower and a great bathtub with both a faucet and a shower head fixture. The sink counter was spacious and there was more than enough room for all of my stuff. >The modern, but nicely muted decor of the room was a pleasure to spend time in. And the closet was large so that we could comfortably hang all of our clothes. > Before we arrived, we asked for a mini-refrigerator and it was right there when we arrived. Any time we made a request or asked for help, the staff took action immediately. It was a bit like magic! We will definitely return to the hotel when we return to D.C.!
