Kimpton The George is celebrated for its prime location near Union Station and the Capitol, with guests often noting the convenience and walkability of its surroundings. The hotel earns high marks for cleanliness and the special touches in its well-appointed rooms, though some guests have encountered maintenance issues or unexpected odors. While the amenities, including complimentary happy hour, are a hit, and the staff's friendly and responsive service frequently garners praise, a few travelers have felt let down by hidden costs, hinting at a need for more transparent pricing practices.

Just back from a quick stay at this hotel, and a very pleasant experience. Their front desk staff were extremely welcoming and kind, which really set the tone. We were offered our choice of room and given a very early check-in, which was greatly appreciated. Our room was lovely and comfortable. We ate dinner in the restaurant and my scallops were cooked to perfection. Very close to the train station, which made our trip to DC very easy.

Thank you for taking the time to write this amazing review. I am very happy to hear that we were able to check you into your room early. I am glad that you had the chance to dine in at the Bistro Bis. I totally agree that the food there is amazing. I hope that you come to visit us again in the near future.

The locatio is a convenient 7 minute walk to Union Station and the subway (although you run a gauntlet of homeless and addicted people to get there. The room was good sized, with a bed and a sofa/sitting area. The bathroom was good sized, and the room was quiet. There was an iron in the closet, and a coffee maker in the room. The wifi was wobbly and frustrating at times. The staff were friendly. Housekeeping was uneven.... I like the fact that they do not provide single-use plastic bottles of soap, etc, but pump bottles on the wall of the shower. However, in my case, the body wash was empty, and the coffee maker had not been serviced from the last customer. All considered, however, it was a good choice, and I may well say again.

We stayed three nights at The George Hotel after a 2 week US road trip. Family of 2 adults and 3 teens. IHG Platinum Elite member.
Overall we had a great stay and I agree with previous reviews that the staff really make it - so helpful and engaging! They were especially patient with me constantly asking if my delayed suitcase (courtesy of American Airlines) had arrived - it finally came 2 days later. They provided me with some emergency toiletries which was very helpful. They happily gave us a late checkout and arranged a taxi transfer to Dulles at the end of our trip which was also very helpful given we had a late flight home.
I was a little disappointed however with the rooms. We had booked two kings with sofa beds, and with the sofa beds pulled out there was very little space. I also felt the rooms and corridors outside were looking in need of some attention. The rooms also felt very dark and gloomy without any nice views (just out to the other rooms opposite). Housekeeping was a bit inconsistent and I had to ask twice for coffee pods and creamer as they had not been replenished. Given that we were paying around $250 per room per night I was hoping for a little more to be honest.
Location was however very good (wonderful views down to the Capitol) and we enjoyed breakfast each morning at a bakery next door which was very convenient. We used Ubers to get around and they were cheap and plentiful.
Overall a great trip nevertheless and we would consider this hotel as an option for a future trip.

Thank you for the comments! We are always looking on areas to improve and have circled back around with our housekeeping teams to keep up the consistency. We re also continuously making improvements with scheduled updates, changes and replacements happening constantly (we just replaced all of our carpeting in our foyer and ballroom).

I stayed in the hotel Feb 13-15. The room was clean but not luxurious. The shower was broken in room 810: water flow would not completely shift to shower head. That reduced the pressure. During check-in they did not mention the resort fee at all, even when I asked "you will only charge incidentals right?". They affirmed positively, but then charged about $60 resort fee for two days. They did not even explain what the resort fee was for, or any of the amenities that come with it. This is clearly deceptive to me. The location was nice, close to Union metro line, botanical garden, and walking distance to National Mall. Overall, I think there are better hotels to stay with the same amount of money.

The hotel was in a great location for visiting the Smithsonian museums, the farthest one was about 2km away (30 minutes walk). The Capitol building itself was an easy 10 minute stroll away.

The hotel is themed around George Washington and his wife Martha, and tastefully decorated. Unlike many other hotels we have stayed in, this one had nice firm pillows plus a bath and separate shower.

The staff were all extremely courteous and friendly and always ready to assist. Happy hour was daily between 5 and 6 pm with supplies of red wine and white wine provided, and entertainment on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Today we were assisted by Ephrem who not only looked after us over happy hour, but also provided car valet services and often guidance and directions

A French bistro off the lobby also provided great dinner options, and there were several restaurants within an easy 15 minute walk.

I wanted to treat my son to a little staycation and tried the Willard, which was full, but their reservation people recommended the George. I was interested in trying a Kimpton hotel so thought it would be fun. Really not impressed with this hotel. It was fine, but nothing special. Really pretty basic... Not even a hair dryer in the room? The absolute worst is the surprise resort fee. I booked the room an hour before I checked in and they told me a price $50 higher than I'd literally just booked. When I pointed this out, the front desk clerk glossed over it by explaining the amenity fee and then incidental fee that's automatically added but then removed minus the amenity fee at checkout. I asked what was included with the amenity fee and was pointed to a little sign on the counter that listed things like free local calls. Ridiculous. Just give the real room price. I'm going to report it to DC tourism bureau because I doubt they're allowed to do this even though they've apparently done it for years based on comments here. This hotel is an odd location. You have to be careful walking at night along E Street. There are a lot of homeless people living in the next block. It's nice if you want to be near the Capitol and I love to walk in DC, but it's a long walk to anything. I do like Bistro Bis.

My trip to Washington, DC on 16 Feb 2021 marked my first official travel since the pandemic hit in March of 2020. After a long day of air travel, I arrived at my hotel where my employer had made a reservation: the Hyatt Regency right around the corner. I pulled up to find the hotel closed. No signs, no notice, no point of contact, it was just shuttered and dark. The taxi driver was nice enough to drop me around the corner at The George. Thankfully, the lights were on and Mr. TC Lewis was behind the desk.

I briefly told Mr. Lewis about my situation, and he offered to call the Hyatt on my behalf to see if he could sort out the confusion. He also allowed me to sit in the lobby while I did the same. After 20 minutes on hold, I was told that yes the hotel had closed and they were unable to contact me directly because my reservation had been made through a central travel company required by my agency. In nearly 20 years of travel I have never encountered a similar situation.

Upon ending the call, Mr. Lewis quickly booked me in a room at your hotel, made sure my IHG information was up to date, gave me some detailed tips for ordering from a delivery service, and offered me a little solace (a glass of wine even though it was a little past the designated wine hour). He booked me in a nice corner room; unfortunately upon settling in it became apparent the heat wasn't working. Mr. Lewis quickly rebooked me in a new room, made sure it was heated before telling me it was ready, and personally moved my bags.

Mr. Lewis is the epitome of the consummate professional. He provided exceptional customer service and went above and beyond to ensure I had a pleasant stay at this property, even if it meant straightening out my reservation at a competing hotel. For these reasons, I will certainly stay at The George when I return to Capitol Hill, and I will recommend this hotel to my colleagues for their official travel.

My mother and I stayed at The George for the American Library Association Annual Conference in June and we could not be more pleased with our experience! As soon as we walked in we saw the fantastic Pride Month decor and felt really seen and affirmed. LOVED your “We Say Gay” postcards at the concierge. We loved the daily wine happy hour, chic comfy decor, and anything we asked for from staff - blankets, wine glasses, mugs, plates & cutlery - was cheerfully fulfilled even if it wasn’t a typical request. In particular we absolutely loved how your staff interacted with us and how friendly they were, especially Solomon, Daniel, Ephrem, and Benjamin who were so courteous, responsive, and went out of their way to take special care of us. I cannot heap enough amazing praise on Benjamin who made us feel like we were VIPs at your establishment - and that wonderful smile (please give him a raise/promotion immediately)!! Housekeeping staff were incredible as well! Additionally we ate several times at Bistro Bis because Memo and his staff made us feel like we were special guests every time. When we checked out I took my mother to the Hirschorn and Solomon was very kind to stow our bags while we visited the museum and even offered to put my cold bag in the staff fridge so my leftovers wouldn’t spoil. My mother and I have stayed in all kinds of boutique and luxury hotels in major cities everywhere, but our experience at The George was absolutely top notch. We can’t wait to return!!

This is a lovely hotel, and I think I might have been a bit stingy on the stars. I’d like to give it four and a half stars, but that isn’t an option! It is very beautifully decorated and massively convenient, especially if you are travelling to DC by train (as we did) as it is a less than five minute wobble with your wheelie bag from the station. The hotel staff are lovely and we arrived just as they were starting their (apparently daily) 5pm complimentary wine hour in the reception area. A nice touch! The rooms are also beautifully decorated and really well soundproofed. The only reason that this is four and not a five star is that for our party of five, the room was small. With the sofa bed pulled out you had to participate in bed parkour to get from one place to another in the room. Add to that five (small to medium) suitcases and the situation was even more acrobatic. Also, in our room the bathroom door was a slider and made of glass. It didn’t shut properly and if you turned the light on at night, everyone woke up. You sensed that whatever you did in the bathroom, everyone in the bedroom could hear and see!! So, if you are a small travelling party, and you know each other really really well, this isn’t a problem and this is a lovely hotel, right in the middle of the action off the mall in DC, surrounded by nice restaurants and walking distance from the station. It is also a short taxi ride to Ronald Reagan airport.

On may last stay, I was told that the amenity charge was a regular feature. I believe, but may be mistaken, that it is associated with the affiliation with IHG Hotels. My daily amenity fee was $22.99 with a $3.40 amenity tax. It did not appear to be associated with any specific useage of hotel amenities, rather, with their availability.
