The trip to DC was a first for me and my family so we wanted to stay at a hotel that was above average, had a great location, superb service. Below is a list of disappointments we had. I understand that our current environment requires certain precautions but all I ask for is communication. We arrived at the hotel late and we were looking forward to settling in and ordering room service. We were not told and it was not noted anywhere that room service was not available. We ended up using DoorDash for dinner that night. Ice had to be requested, which is not a big deal. The hotel knew we had 4 people in the room yet we only had enough towels for 3 people. When requested additional towels, we were given an ample supply. When I inquired as to the restaurant downstairs, I was told that it would not be available until Thursday, but we were checking out Wednesday. So again, we had to use DoorDash. The Kimpton George website listed a few things that either were not available or were not communicated. 1. We did not receive a PPE welcome kit 2. Minibar - Snacks and drinks were not available at the front desk. They only had bottled water and a small canister of chips. 3. Grab & Go items not available 4. In-room dining was not available Needless to say, having two teen boys in the hotel with a lack of snacks was not a great choice. The beds were comfy.

I wanted to treat my son to a little staycation and tried the Willard, which was full, but their reservation people recommended the George. I was interested in trying a Kimpton hotel so thought it would be fun. Really not impressed with this hotel. It was fine, but nothing special. Really pretty basic... Not even a hair dryer in the room? The absolute worst is the surprise resort fee. I booked the room an hour before I checked in and they told me a price $50 higher than I'd literally just booked. When I pointed this out, the front desk clerk glossed over it by explaining the amenity fee and then incidental fee that's automatically added but then removed minus the amenity fee at checkout. I asked what was included with the amenity fee and was pointed to a little sign on the counter that listed things like free local calls. Ridiculous. Just give the real room price. I'm going to report it to DC tourism bureau because I doubt they're allowed to do this even though they've apparently done it for years based on comments here. This hotel is an odd location. You have to be careful walking at night along E Street. There are a lot of homeless people living in the next block. It's nice if you want to be near the Capitol and I love to walk in DC, but it's a long walk to anything. I do like Bistro Bis.

Hotel- Kimpton The George (Washington, DC) Date- August 2020 (2 nights) Overall: Very good. 4/5. The theme of the hotel is captivating; the rooms just a bit above average, and the staff friendly and engaging. Rooms do not include suites, for the most part. Accommodations- Very Good. 4/5. We were assigned a “Executive 1 King” room, and it was nice. The styling and décor had a clear theme, George Washington. I took pictures all throughout the hotel for my history buff mother. However, it was substantially smaller than neighboring property rooms, and the only suite available at the property is the Presidential Suite. Next remodel: add more suites. One recommendation, though, is to better close the gap between the room doors and the floor. A brush or plastic bottom seal would help with climate control and add to the sense of privacy in each room. IHG Rewards Club Recognition- Good. 3/5. We were thanked for our loyalty. However, we had to ask for amenity points and the Raid-the-Bar benefit was unavailable. In other similar hotels, a bodega was erected at the front desk to accommodate the sudden thirst and hunger of guests. Sadly, guests will have to go elsewhere for snacks or soft drinks. A late check out of 4pm was offered. Staff- 5/5. Benjamin, the Housekeeping manager, who checked us into the hotel was delightful and fun to interact with. TC. who was our wine sommelier for wine hour was engaging and quite friendly. He was knowledgeable, and as accommodating as possible. Hunter, the night auditor was perky and helpful, even first thing in the morning! We chose to stay at this hotel for a special event, and we were delighted when it was not only recognized but we were also given mini cinnamon rolls to snack on. Excellent job, front desk, on making us feel like valued guests. Housekeeping- Excellent. 5/5. The room could not have been cleaner, and to top it off, housekeeping staff came to our room and checked on us just after we arrived to ensure we were happy with everything. All toiletries and bathroom supplies were provided in adequate supply for the duration of our stay. The only recommendation I have is that the flooring and carpet along the baseboards we routinely vacuumed. Pool/Gym- Not evaluated. Not open during the pandemic. Breakfast/Meal Options- 4/5. Very good. The restaurant was open, and wine hour proceeded as usual, less the prohibited congregating. Coffee service is not offered at the front desk, but coffee machines (Keurig or Nespresso) were in the rooms. Laundry- Not evaluated. Pricing was appropriate and two bags were available for dirty clothing. No one likes to pack their dirty clothes in with their clean ones; thank you for thinking ahead about this. Computer/Printer/WiFi- Wifi was strong throughout the hotel but streaming was regularly interrupted and not reliable. Property Appearance & Maintenance- Excellent. 5/5. Exterior- Very good. The hotel is appropriately branded and can be easily located. The entrance is clean and crisp, but the handicap buttons do not function, which makes bringing a luggage cart in a bit challenging. Interior- Excellent. The hallway walls and floors are clean, free of skuffs and debris. Artwork that captured the eye was present all throughout the hotel. Other- This hotel is one of the few Kimpton hotels that are charging the AMENITY FEE during the pandemic. The charge is listed at the front desk as an amenity including disinfection fogging, Personal Protective Equipment (masks, gloves, sanitizing wipes), and disinfection gel, all of which should be standard during a pandemic. The television remote control cover was a great idea, though, I have to admit. A picture of what the amenity fee is supposedly for is included in this review. Many of the other ‘amenities’ offered did not apply to most guests, such as an electric car station (How many people have these already?!?), use of a bike (standard at all Kimpton properties), PressReader (who doesn’t get their news on their phone or internet enabled device these days), local and long distance calls (who doesn’t use their cell phone nowadays?), upgraded WiFi speed (a standard Elite membership benefit of all IHG properties), and other questionable ‘amenities’. !!! RECOMMENDATION: Follow the lead of other hotels, including nearby Kimpton properties and hire a security guard to encourage mask usage. I ended up in an elevator full of mask-less young people two times during the first day of my stay at this hotel. At night, the elevators reeked of marijuana. I was told that disinfecting gel that was missing from stations had been stolen; again, security could potentially resolve this. The third caution I offer to other potential guests is the front door. Although set up such that guests should have to use their key to enter at night, the door was not secured at 1:15am. Why have this door feature if it is not going to be employed?
