Lovely accommodation to finish off our 2 weeks in New Zealand. Great position and easy walking distance to both french and british areas of Akaroa. Breakfast was great. Interesting rambling garden to explore. Only negatives are - no water pressure out of shower and slightly over priced. We enjoyed our stay.

I have wanted to visit Akaroa for over 40 years, and finally getting the opportunity, only a historic, bay-view house would to. Blythcliffe fit the bill perfectly, and was also so much more. John and Lesley are the perfect hosts, the room lovely, and everything very close for those on foot (Very near the bus stop too; although there's parking...

What a find! We've never stayed anywhere like this beautiful colonial home surrounded by forests and streams and yet right by the sea. Lesley and John were wonderful hosts and we felt right at home. They gave us great advice on walks and restaurants, served delicious breakfasts in the beautiful dining room and also introduced us to a friendly eel...

This was our second visit and we are already planning a third visit. Our hosts Leslie and John are warm welcoming people and nothing seems to be too much trouble. If you are intending to stay for a few days, "The Stables" is a lovely roomy self contained apartment, beautifully furnished, opening out onto a private courtyard. Blycliffe is only a...

Blycliffe is a haven of peace and quiet a short stroll from the town centre. The owners looked after us so well it was like we were friends staying at their house rather than paying guests. Lovely room, beautiful garden and smashing breakfast. Don't miss out on visiting the eel in the stream.

Absolutely loved this place. From a warm welcome by the owners to a lovely and huge apartment with awesome bath and shower. The breakfast was great, afterwards we played a sully game of croquet and were shown the 80 year old eel and had a short walk in the massive garden. We then got some great tips about South Island...

The gardens are well-kept and full of flowers. There are extensive paths through hilly forests with a stream (containing a fat eel called Pavarotti). Delicious scones and tea with a wonderful host, John Harding, a very interesting and welcoming person. He has been art director for major moves, like Lord of the Rings.

I booked the Stables at Blythcliffe as a treat for my mother and I, and it could not have been more perfect for our stay in Akaroa. From the moment we walked up the garden path, we knew this place was special. The grand old house is steeped in history and nestled in expansive garden and bush surrounds. John and...

Lesley and John were absolutely great hosts. What an amazing grand old house. Excellent comfortable rooms and amenities. Our first stay in a B&B as a bit of a treat. Really wish we had more time. Another time maybe. Keep up the great work.

We are honoured to be your inaugural bnb hosts! The Rose Room has such a lovely sunny afternoon aspect, and nothing beats that balcony and a glass of wine ! It was so nice to meet you both - come back soon!

Akaroa is our last stop for 2-week road trip on NZ South Island, and Blythcliffe has made it quite memorable and touching. The house was 160 years of history, and the outlook into the garden is fabulous! Lesley and John couple gave us a very friendly welcome: knowing the fact that we missed the last Cruise on arrival and has...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Blythcliffe is a superb, 158 yr old grand house, set in extensive, restful and private grounds; built in the Colonial Regency style, and known locally as Akaroa's Stately Home. We are one of Akaroa's oldest and most loved houses and have a Category 1 listing with Heritage New Zealand,Pouhere Tahonga. We invite you to come and experience this very special home for your stay in the quaint and historic French settlement village of Akaroa. Blythcliffe is an easy 2 minute stroll to several excellent cafes and restaurants. Hire a bike or kayak and explore the many other attractions Akaroa Village, harbour and surrounding areas have to offer, you're centrally located for trips further afield on Canterbury's stunning Banks Peninsular. Escape the crowds - we have two guest accommodations available: The Stables is a self contained, completely private, stable conversion, adjacent to the main house and grape lined sunny courtyard. Perfect for that romantic getaway weekend or longer holiday, it's open plan with kitchen, bathroom - including a claw foot bath - and one (extremely comfortable!) super king sized bed. Single roll out beds are available on request for a fee, they are suitable for teenagers or children. The Stables has wheelchair access. Enjoy your delicious, self served continental breakfast in your room, the courtyard or our sunny garden croquet pavilion. The Rose Rooms at Blythcliffe are a sunny, comfortable private suite of 3 rooms in the main house that comfortably accommodates two. You'll enjoy a lovely airy, sunny bedroom, a separate breakfast / sitting room and a private bathroom with shower only; all accessed from the main upstairs hallway, on the second floor. You have private access to the second floor balcony from both the bedroom and sitting room, overlooking the croquet lawn & gardens, the perfect spot for a glass of wine or breakfast with the birds! Kereru, Bell Birds and Wax Eyes are frequent visitors, the bird song and skydiving of the Kereru are amazing! The Rose Rooms are sadly not wheelchair friendly, they are accessed via a semi-steepish staircase. Your rate for both spaces includes a delicious, self served continental breakfast and WiFi. Cooked breakfast (with eggs from our own free range chickens and NZ free range bacon) is served to you and available upon request at an extra charge of NZ$20 pp. Why not spend some time exploring the ethereal Blythcliffe private forest, protected by a conservation order and containing many spectacular examples of native trees and plants - some trees are hundreds of years old. We will be happy to guide your bush walk, next to the Balguerie Stream as it tumbles over its rocky bed, feed our tame Native long finned eels and marvel at the song and antics of the native Wood Pigeons, Fantails, Bell Birds and Wax Eyes. Picnic lunches are available upon request, extra charges apply. ... more   less
