Loved this big old house in such an amazing setting. Very comfortable beds, great linen. We had a great walk around the grounds and over the stream, such a special place.Blythcliffe is just a short stroll to everything Akaroa has to offer. Highly recommend it as a must stay in Akaroa.

A very charming historic home a short walk to the village. Comfortable and relaxed. Lesley and John were fantastic hosts and very informative about the house and the area. Blackberry the cat was very friendly and it was an amazing experience feeding Pavarotti the eel! Went for a walk in the grounds and surrounding bush and collected chestnuts.

Leslie and John are wonderful hosts of this completely unique and historic home. Look out for Blackberry the beautiful cat and the 'girls' - chatty chooks. A beautiful garden to enjoy and location very handy to all attractions. Breakfast is vey delicious with homemade marmalade- croissants fresh! Warm welcoming owners, comfortable bed, clean and spacious room, large bathroom with wrought iron bath & delicious healthy breakfast. Close to everything Akaroa had to offer, right in the heart of the town with lovely views. Lovely stream on property with a short walk and even done tame eels to meet. Akaroa was the first stop in New Zealand and Lesley and John made it a wonderful experience. After booking the B&B, they sent us a great initial email that helped us choose some tours to do around Akaroa as well as plan appropriately for the drive from Christchurch. The B&B is located just minutes by walking from the pier and... More

Blythcliffe is a beautiful old house full of charm and character. Hosts John and Lesley are just as charming as the house, very helpful and friendly! The rooms are traditionally decorated, beds comfy and made up with lovely bed linen. The breakfast was delicious, fresh fruit, warm croissants, nice muesli, all set beautifully on vintage table cloths and napkins. The location... More

This was my second stay at Blythcliffe, and it was just wonderful, even better than the first. The hosts, Lesley and John, have done an amazing job restoring the house and gardens of Blythcliffe. It is a truly beautiful heritage house, and the gardens are gorgeous. Every little thing is taken care of: it is welcoming, and full of character... More

Blythcliffe was rightly recommended to me. It's a wonderful historic house set in a lovely garden, close to the interesting old settlement of Akaroa. My room opened on to the balcony with a distant view of the harbour. It was a hot night and I left the french door ajar, and awoke to the sound of the dawn chorus. It... More

We love to think of Blythcliffe as a haven from the bustle of Akaroa - although we are a minutes walk from the village centre, you'd never know it ! The Rose Room is special, the French Doors onto the balcony are very safe to leave open at night, even when travelling alone. We certainly had some soaring temperatures last... More

We stayed in the building beside the main house. It was easily the largest room of our holiday in New Zealand. It had more amenities than I do at home and our own courtyard. We could wander through the interesting garden and my toddler could feed eels and rabbits. Akaroa in general is a flower gardeners dream. The owners were... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Blythcliffe is a superb, 158 yr old grand house, set in extensive, restful and private grounds; built in the Colonial Regency style, and known locally as Akaroa's Stately Home. We are one of Akaroa's oldest and most loved houses and have a Category 1 listing with Heritage New Zealand,Pouhere Tahonga. We invite you to come and experience this very special home for your stay in the quaint and historic French settlement village of Akaroa. Blythcliffe is an easy 2 minute stroll to several excellent cafes and restaurants. Hire a bike or kayak and explore the many other attractions Akaroa Village, harbour and surrounding areas have to offer, you're centrally located for trips further afield on Canterbury's stunning Banks Peninsular. Escape the crowds - we have two guest accommodations available: The Stables is a self contained, completely private, stable conversion, adjacent to the main house and grape lined sunny courtyard. Perfect for that romantic getaway weekend or longer holiday, it's open plan with kitchen, bathroom - including a claw foot bath - and one (extremely comfortable!) super king sized bed. Single roll out beds are available on request for a fee, they are suitable for teenagers or children. The Stables has wheelchair access. Enjoy your delicious, self served continental breakfast in your room, the courtyard or our sunny garden croquet pavilion. The Rose Rooms at Blythcliffe are a sunny, comfortable private suite of 3 rooms in the main house that comfortably accommodates two. You'll enjoy a lovely airy, sunny bedroom, a separate breakfast / sitting room and a private bathroom with shower only; all accessed from the main upstairs hallway, on the second floor. You have private access to the second floor balcony from both the bedroom and sitting room, overlooking the croquet lawn & gardens, the perfect spot for a glass of wine or breakfast with the birds! Kereru, Bell Birds and Wax Eyes are frequent visitors, the bird song and skydiving of the Kereru are amazing! The Rose Rooms are sadly not wheelchair friendly, they are accessed via a semi-steepish staircase. Your rate for both spaces includes a delicious, self served continental breakfast and WiFi. Cooked breakfast (with eggs from our own free range chickens and NZ free range bacon) is served to you and available upon request at an extra charge of NZ$20 pp. Why not spend some time exploring the ethereal Blythcliffe private forest, protected by a conservation order and containing many spectacular examples of native trees and plants - some trees are hundreds of years old. We will be happy to guide your bush walk, next to the Balguerie Stream as it tumbles over its rocky bed, feed our tame Native long finned eels and marvel at the song and antics of the native Wood Pigeons, Fantails, Bell Birds and Wax Eyes. Picnic lunches are available upon request, extra charges apply. ... more   less
