WOW! I usually stay at the Hyatt Regency, but we had a chance to rent a Condo. The prices were great, the rooms were very special and you had choices of several pools, a water slide, 24 hour gym, great free parking or Valet. On the grounds is also Duke's restaurant and bar (make reservations),. Get off the elevator and right there is a mini-mart and they make several items also. There is also a great BBQ area. This is a real winner. Everyone that works there is so very nice and helpful.

We are staying at the Honua Kai Resort in the Villas, Unit Luana 1B. The property is beautiful with many amenities, pools, beach access and equipment, and a restaurant and general store. The grounds are well maintained and the property feels very safe and secure with security monitoring activity throughout the grounds.
The highlight though, is the unit itself. This villa is a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom unit with a huge lanai and outdoor living area. The high ceilings give a large, spacious feeling. We have a family of 6 here for an extended stay and we are very comfortable in this huge unit. There are 2 master suites and 1 bedroom with a full bath across the hallway, which makes this unit very nice for several couples. The beds and bedding are high quality and very comfortable. The kitchen is large with high end appliances. It is fully stocked with kitchen equipment and dishes. We really appreciate the large grill on the lanai and the large table for eating outide. The lanai also has a motorized shade screen that can be lowered for shade or privacy.
This unit was rented from a private owner, Brandon Mullenberg, via VRBO. His special touches to the unit were especially appreciated. There is a closet stocked with beach toys and equipment, a local property mananger who is prompt with response of any needs, and many little extras throughout the unit such as Rokus for every TV, an InstantPot, Kuerig, and Vitamix. It is really like having all the comforts of home! We have appreciated our time here at this gorgeous resort!
Highly Recommend!

We had a fairly roomy, clean 1 bedroom unit with a partial ocean view. As this was the whale watching season we could use binoculars and see whales from our room, very nice. Kitchen is not well lit at all, it is really dark even with all the lights on. We did not try to fix meals as there were not a lot of pans and utensils in the kitchen. The kitchen only had 4 each knives, forks, spoons, cups, glasses and plates. Paper products were provided as well as dishwasher and clothes washer detergent and dryer sheets. Having Dukes as part of the property had it's advantage for a quick breakfast or reserving meals for dinner. As others have stated there were lots and lots of children, but nothing that bothered my wife and I. Having a walk way along the beach was very nice. You could easily walk to a grocery store, pizza parlor, restaurant (Slappy Cakes, (Yummy)), and shops. Others have said that parking was a problem,we never had issues finding places to park in the underground garage, even if coming in late at night.

The Honua Kai is a lovely condo resort that offers the amenities of a hotel coupled with spacious and well appointed suites. The grounds are lovely and well maintained, with a huge multi-pool aquatics complex. The resort has a nice spa, a small but well equipped gym, and a convenience store off the lobby. Duke's restaurant is on the grounds, which makes for convenient dining, including poolside service. The Honua Kai is located at the north end of Kaanapali Beach, 2.3 miles from the popular Whaler's Village complex, so it can be a bit of walk to other restaurants and shopping. Despite the distance, the walk is a lovely trek, along the beachfront trail. The suites are spacious, and very well appointed, featuring upscale kitchens and in-room laundry facilities, and housekeeping services every other day. The suites open to large lanais which provided a lovely view of the resort grounds and ocean. In addition to a full kitchen, there are poolside barbecues available for those who wish to cook outdoors.
Overall, the Honua Kai is a great place to stay. During our 6-day sojourn, we only encountered a couple of issues: the AC did not function well in one of the bedrooms, and housekeeping service was very minimal. Bathrooms were not cleaned well, and we had to make several calls to the front desk to request toilet paper. Aside from those two issues, which admittedly were annoying, we enjoyed our stay very much, and would book the resort again.

We were so looking forward to our stay here but were very disappointed. We had a "mountain" view but was of construction of the villas. The condo is old and tired and in much need of a complete overhaul. Furniture was uncomfortable and badly stained. Dishwasher smelled like something died in it and couldn't get rid of the smell so didn't use it. Toaster was broken. Tiny kitchen, no place to put anything other than stacking it on the small island. Bathroom again was small with a tiny vanity and no place to put anything. One small light in the ceiling over the sink. Impossible to see shaving let alone applying makeup. Had to use the lamp in the bedroom (which had also seen better days). Had to call twice to get a burned out lightbulb replaced and housekeeping was pretty much nonexistent. The carpet hadn't been vacuumed when we arrived and wasn't vacuumed once while we were there. When they removed the towels would forget to replace them. Had to call housekeeping every time and after a few days they finally came up with a large cart and loaded us up with supplies. My husband went to a condo a few doors down to get some items and caught the cleaning staff eating the tenants food. They were not allowed back in our condo after that.
The grounds are beautiful but it is impossible to get a lounge chair in the pool area and they are always full of kids, even the small "quiet" pool.
Dukes is great but make sure to make a reservation or you will wait a long time for a table. The staff in Whalers General Store are great and the selection is good.
This is supposed to be a luxury condo complex and the prices reflect that but it is far from luxurious.

Just stayed at this resort a month ago and already cannot wait to return. I traveled with my family so having the condo setup was fantastic; we had a full kitchen so we could have snacks & food readily available for our toddler. It also had in-suite laundry which is just always an appreciated feature for toddlers & ease of packing. The amenities are truly out of this world: multiple pools, a (fantastic!) restaurant, a cute market on the first floor with a full coffee shop, food, gelato, etc. If you don't want to swim in the three pools, just walk a few steps further to hit the beach. There's a beach shack on the grounds as well to get beach/pool supplies like floaties, snorkel masks, etc. Staff was so friendly and the hotel well-kept. Staying at Honua Kai was a dream! I cannot recommend it enough & look forward to going back.

This resort has been a major disappointment. Apparently there is more than one company involved in managing it and if you book with the one the staff of the other one(s) won’t help you with any issue you have. We had problems with our parking passes not working, then later that same night we couldn’t find parking in the garage or guest lots at all and both times the person we talked to told us that since we didn’t book through them we had to go to the other building front desk for help. We paid for 2 ocean view rooms and the one is on the 2nd floor and we can’t see the ocean unless we’re standing up and the other one is up on 5 but tucked in a corner and is oppressively hot with no ocean sounds or breezes. We went to the beach on property - it’s a thin strip and no chairs are provided anywhere. The pools are nice but, like parking, there is a major shortage of chairs so people were laying out towels on the grass like you would at a free state park beach. There are automatic towel dispensing machines in our lobby and all around the resort but those aren’t for us - we need to go to a stand to get them when the stand is open, otherwise we can go to the front desk in the other building. We knew there would be no housekeeping but no one has called or come by to check on us at all or see if we need anything like trash removal or refreshed towels.

I went to the front desk at the other building on the first night feeling tired and frustrated and I expressed my initial distress to the front desk clerk who assured me that she would let her manager know and someone would contact me, but I haven’t heard from anyone and that was over 3 days ago.

After staying at Disney’s Aulani resort in Oahu this is a huge letdown. My 82 year old parents brought their kids and grandkids to Hawaii and Honua Kai “Resort and Spa” hasn’t even come close to what we expected. The place itself is lovely but I don’t feel like a valued guest and I have no reason to encourage anyone to come here. Find someplace else to stay.

Check-in was painful! After a wait in line, I had to call the other 2 members of the family to the front desk to show our Safe Travels Hawaii trip indicating that we were COVID safe. Next, we were told our room wasn't yet ready at 3:30pm. This ended up being a blessing as we went to Duke's (on property) and had a late lunch/early dinner...good thing as when we left there was a long line and people were told the next availability was 8pm. As we were leaving, I received the call that the rooms was ready.

The room is gorgeous - 2 bedroom, 2 full baths, full kitchen, washer-drier, lovely balcony. With 2 teen girls + my husband and I, we have enough space and aren't fighting over the showers. The long hallway is a great drop zone for beach gear & shoes.

The beach has a reef that we can walk in and snorkel. Bring & wear water shoes! The reef goes right up to the beach & is sharp. The family next to us "lost" two members to cut up feet within 15 minutes of each other. I think the one girl may have ended up needing stitches.

The pools are pleasant and inviting.

Unfortunately, space is an issue. The parking garage is usually full by 6pm and if you don't get a spot there you have a LONG walk from where you then "can" park. The pool doesn't have enough pool chairs for the number of guests and they have a sign that says if you don't "visit" your spot every hour they will collect your belongings for you. *So much for dropping your stuff & living in the water! The beach has 0 hotel provided chairs, umbrellas, etc. You are on your own to find some disappearing shade under a tree and sit on your towel.

There is a grocery store across the street, so having the kitchen really saves A LOT of money. Each meal out is averaging $25+ per person or more IF you can get a table.

Currently, there is 0 room service due to COVID, so you're on your own for towels & garbage duty. A broom & dust pan would be nice to collect the sand. but it is what it is.

Visiting from South Florida. Hawaii is beautiful coral reef 150 feet off the beach but I’m giving this place three stars because the governor of the state is out of her mind. I don’t understand why we all have to wear masks everywhere when we’ve all been vaccinated and tested upon coming into Hawaii. If you haven’t been vaccinated by now stay home. If you’re in the hospitality industry and you haven’t been vaccinated you should consider the logic in that. This place is very crowded if you don’t have reservations for the restaurant on the property at least a month in advance even for the little restaurant and bar at the pool forget about going there. the bar is very crowded there’s no seats because of Covid “separation”. All of the higher end restaurants in town are booked solid if you don’t have reservations at least a month and a half out you’re not getting in and it’s a 2 to 3 hour wait on any given night because of the ridiculous separation rules. Luckily we rented this unit that had a kitchen we were very happy at the fact we can stop at Costco and load up and cook in the room. Super nice barbecue area downstairs by the crowded pool. The resort staff were accommodating we had to move our room once luckily we booked through the resort and not through the individual owners here. If you book through the individual owner and you have a problem you’re screwed so book through the resort even if it costs more. If you don’t like noise don’t book a room on the pool it’s very loud. However you’ll be able to see the sun set from the pool side the other side is quiet and peaceful. Everything here is super expensive so bring your checkbook cash and credit cards you’ll need all of them. And I have traveled the world and know expensive. I would’ve given it four stars but they need to get this place truly open quicker without all the mask nonsense if they’re going to charge the money that they charge to come here And sell out these hotels which the all are sold out. We actually went zip lining but had to wear masks can you believe it seriously? I would wait on Hawaii for a while for this kind of money do you want to truly experience it without the nonsense.

I don’t often write reviews but felt compelled to do so after my experience here. I got two suites for a week for my family to stay in for our full family vacation. Both rooms we weren’t allowed to check into until past check in time due to them but being ready. One room was nearly two hours past check in time. I spent over $10,000 on these rooms and was very displeased with this, and was only compensated $200. The maid service was barely available and required 24 hour notice then they expected you to leave the room 3 hours before cleaning, during cleaning, and 3 hours after. I felt that was a little excessive and not very guest friendly. The resort itself was pretty clean, but the service and hospitality was very poor compared to other places I’ve stayed in Hawaii. All pool cabanas were “booked” out until July 12th, with many not being used but they wouldn’t make a cancellation list to those of us who desired a cabana. I planned this trip for a couple years and had my room reserved for 18 months, this resort and its hospitality didn’t meet my expectations for me or my family. I will not return to this resort and hope they improve for their future guests.

Unfortunately, luggage is the last thing that everyone else is worried about at this time. The resort was not touched in the tragic fire, so the luggage is safe. Patience is what is needed at this point. Aloha

I would call and ask about an early check-in. With this much advanced warning they should be able to accommodate you. If not, Lahaina is 10 minutes down the road and it is full of restaurants and things to do.
