My husband and I stayed at Montpelier for a week Christmas through New Years. Lovely property and staff. Food was delicious (we ate at both the main restaurant and the sugar mill) and rooms were spacious and clean. We had a couples massage in our room which was very good. The hotel concierge also helped us arrange a guided hike as well as a yacht charter. Everyone was a pleasure to work with.

The hotel definitely has a more laid back vibe than some other boutique hotels we have stayed at (eg no 24 hour concierge - the front office opens at 8am) but would definitely recommend staying here if you’re just looking to unwind, relax and fit in a few activities here and there.

Pros

The property is situated in the hills so you benefit from the breezy trade winds. It’s only a 15 minute shuttle to the beach which is beautiful and private (see pics). The pool is also very nice and the bartender Kaddy somehow remembers all the guests names which is very charming.

The owners have a big yellow lab named Cosmo who is adorable. If you find yourself missing your fur baby, it’s a nice treat to pet a good boy.

Cons

We had a problem with our shower in room 11 (wasn’t draining, no hot water, barely any water pressure) - they moved us to room 3 which was a bit more modern and had a working shower. I just wish we had insisted on moving sooner rather than spend 4 days with a cold shower.

Tips/Recommendations

Guests who are going to the beach need to grab towels from the pool and bring them in the shuttle. Not a big deal but still weird for a beach hotel - it wouldn’t hurt to have clean towels at the beach (with that being said the hotel did bring us towels the day we forgot them!) Also it would be nice if they served little snacks (e.g. small bowl of nuts or chips) to beach and pool loungers especially if guests are ordering drinks all day.

After sailing down to beautiful St. Kitts from St. Croix, I decided to stay in this hotel which came highly recommended by a local in Nevis. I must say, the service with a smile and great accommodations fills you up as you are surrounded with historical sites with modern amenities. My room was breathtaking of picturesque views of the Caribbean Sea which made my solo trip into a girls trip. My girls enjoyed the fine dining by the poolside (we were having a night swim) and spa treatments to name a few. We can’t stop talking about the beautiful boutique hotel, where memories are born and blossomed!

I've always wanted to visit Nevis and a good deal on ba.com made that possible. Flights are via Antigua both ways. BA on time but their in-flight catering has reached new depths - it was awful. Transfer booked via BA website and that went very smoothly.

The Montpelier is ideal for a truly relaxing break in a delightful, peaceful location. No TVs in the rooms and no enforced entertainment! The staff without exception are the best I have come across in years and the owner makes herself known to all the guests.

The rooms are spread across the grounds in the beautiful grounds. Huge beds, showers with plenty of hot water, Nespresso machine and a terrace from which you can watch the abundant bird and wildlife including the resident troupe of monkeys!

The food is excellent with a good wine list. Our only slight disappointment was the beach barbecue on the Thursday. I thought it was only for hotel guests but it seems to be open to the public and there wasn't any open fire grilling of meats and fish etc. Just fish in a prepared sauce, some rather skinny ribs and overdone lobster tails. Still it was a nice location and the band were great. Transport to the beach was included in the US$70 charge.

The Montpellier Plantation is a beautifully restored sugar mill, the rooms are spacious, clean and well equipped with very comfy beds. We had a little terrace with heavenly views over the immaculate gardens all the way out to the Caribbean sea (see attached photo).

The staff at the Montpellier are delightful, very friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were excellent and on the evening that we ate dinner we found the food to be top quality and delicious. On top of this there is afternoon tea offered each day, a welcome pause before tucking into a fabulous rum punch later at the bar.

The Montpellier has it's own private beach with sunbeds and a covered bar area that you can retire to should you experience a burst of liquid sunshine. If you have a car or simply want to be flexible you're given a key to the beach gate when you check-in, otherwise the hotel organise a taxi at 10.30 a.m. returning at 3.00 p.m. We found that this was a perfect amount of time and enjoyed the immaculate pool area either side of this.

We absolutely loved our stay and would love to return in the future.

Montpelier Plantation offers travelers gracious hospitality, delicious cuisine, and a warm/helpful/friendly staff ....... all surrounded by beautiful grounds.
Dinners at Restaurant 750 were all all very delicious, with abundant vegetarian options for my wife. If one enjoys fresh seafood well .... you are in luck. Breakfast ( included in our rate/package ) was plentiful and delicious.
Our room had a great view of the Caribbean ant Mt. Nevis. And we were treated views of the wild donkeys, goats/sheep, and the monkeys.
With approximately 20 some rooms, Montpelier is a true boutique gem. Many of the people who we met are repeat guests.

My husband and I choose Montpelier to celebrate our 20 year anniversary. We choose this property in order to have a non touristy boutique experience on an island known for its relaxed style and friendly people. From the moment we arrived in the island we felt special. From the flawless pickup at the airport to the transportation to a water taxi and on to Montpelier, the transfer could not have been easier. Our arrival rum punch and tour of the property set the stage for a wonderful 5 day visit. Our plantation room was understated and intimate with sweeping views of the ocean. Each day we enjoyed a different dining experience with an array of food offerings all delicious. The tasty and intricate menu in the Sugar Mill was as good as any meal I have had throughout the world. The wine list was extensive with a knowledgeable sommelier helping us with our selections. In the mornings, I made a coffee in our room and sat on the front veranda and watched the monkeys at the edge of the forest. The breakfast served each morning was delicious, we loved the banana pancakes! Our days were spent reading by the pool where enjoyed the vast array of refreshing cocktails expertly crafted by the always friendly Kaddy. We spent time at the private beach just a short drive away and were the only ones there with our own bartender! On Thursday evening we enjoyed the beach barbecue and the fantastic music of local island musician legend, Garlic. Watching the sun go down on the beach was one of our highlights. What makes Montpelier truly special are its people. From Leslie greeting us each morning at breakfast to the thoughtful assistance of Abi with our plans each day, and the kindness of its owner, our stay was truly magical. When we departed, we felt as though we were leaving family and friends. If you are looking for an authentic and relaxed experience with warm hospitality, look no further than Montpelier. We will return and stay longer next time. Thank you Montpelier for making our anniversary so special!

Second holiday in Nevis and stayed at the Montpelier again. Different room this time but still had a view of the gardens toward the sea. Very comfortable big bed. Room cleaned every day to a very high standard.

Usual friendly welcome on reception and smooth check in after long journey (plane was delayed in Antigua due to mechanical issue). Throughout our stay all the staff make it their priority to make your stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Without exception they are great.

The standard of breakfasts has remained with a good selection of hot and cold food and great coffee.

We hired a car this time (rather than relying on the beach shuttle) and this was a good decision as we were also able to tour around the island in our own time. We also tend to eat out in the evening and having the car allowed us to sample a variety of restaurants.

The only improvement that could be made in the room was to the water pressure of the shower but from reading the local press it appears that this is an island wide issue at the moment.

Booked again for later this year.

This is an extraordinary place. A beautiful, historic property. Very warm and friendly staff across the board, so many smiling faces that made staying here very special. We felt very well cared for throughout our stay, every detail was anticipated and arranged for us. We experienced the food at each of the dining venues during our week at Montpelier and all were excellent. Swimming pool is gorgeous with great views of Mt. Nevis, the Mill Privee dining experience is unlike any other that I can think of. The private beach club is on the Caribbean side of the island, no seaweed and looking directly across to St. Kitts just a few miles away. Just go, they will take care of everything. We will no doubt be returning.

I love Montpelier plantation. I have been coming here for 12 years and have met several couples every year that have also been visiting for 15+ years.

The accommodations are perfect and comfortable and do not have TV’s allowing you to really relax and unplug from the world. The grounds are spectacular and lush and the restaurants are amazing. You can choose between having a casual dining experience at their pool bar Indigo or a more fine dining experience at 750. The menu at 750 changes daily giving you lots of options if you are staying a week or more. The Chef is one of the best in the Caribbean.. his food it creative, with beautiful presentation and amazing flavors. When I first started visiting, I explored all restaurants on the island but am content now to stay on property as the options are always delicious!

Among the best things at the property is the staff. They are friendly, attentive, not intrusive and they remember you and greet you like you are coming home .. giving hugs when it is time to leave! Their smiles are the best and most staff have been there for many years! The owner Muffin cares very deeply about the staff and it shows!

The property sits up on the hill but has a private beach 20 mins away that is perfect. There is a shuttle service that takes you there each morning and you can take a picnic lunch, enjoy cocktails at their bar at the beach or go to a few nearby restaurants for lunch.

If you are looking for a vacation destination where you can unplug and unwind, this is the best place to come!

A beautiful, secluded boutique hotel where service is second to none and you really feel looked after.

Nothing was too much trouble for the reception staff to organise, the owner was on-site and made the effort to get to know us. The standard and quality of food was very high. The highlight of the week was the beach bbq, a must to attend, very romantic and well organised.

Not a place for you if you want dancing and drinking past midnight or noisy gatherings round the pool. This is for those that seek a tranquil and peaceful haven to recharge the batteries.

Last but not least, a nightly ritual of sitting on our verandah to watch the sun set was just breathtaking.

How much is a typical dinner at the Montpelier
Answer from nancy s

The food around the pool is really very good, and very reasonable too. The only problem was we weren't too hungry after the Montpellier's fantastic breakfast! The Restaurant is a bit pricier, about the same as a good restaurant in the UK. The Barbecue on the beach we thought was fantastic, and went both Mondays we were in Nevis. Have a great time and go to the Barbecue if you can.

They organise the transfer from the ferry (but obviously check). You will be very well looked after!

We took a cargo boat/ferry from St. Kitt's over to Nevis, but Montpelier can also set up transportation via speed boat and taxi (which we did for our return to St. Kitt's for expediency). There were a few different ferries that ran from Basseterre to Charlestown, the one that is best for you would probably depend on your schedule. We did rent a car in Nevis, which was also arranged through Montpelier. Since they offer these services to arrange/coordinate logistics such as this, I would allow them to do it - it will make it easier on you.
