Barcelo Maya Palace garners mixed reviews, with guests praising its clean, spacious rooms and a wealth of amenities like inviting pools and beach activities. However, some travelers question the value, citing overpriced services and underwhelming premium experiences. While the hotel's location is generally appreciated for its beach proximity, issues with room assignments and navigation are noted.
The atmosphere offers charm and lively events, yet lacks consistent local flair. Service experiences vary significantly, ranging from caring to inattentive, with reports of long waits and communication gaps.

My husband and I stayed here for two weeks in January in a non premium room. It was our 16th all inclusive resort with 10 of those being in Mexico. Here are my thoughts: - Overall it is a beautiful property, well maintained - Beds were super comfortable, probably the best we've ever had at an all inclusive - We easily logged over 15,000 steps/day without really trying, however we preferred walking to the adjacent properties rather than using the shuttle - The food was very good. While we did not eat at the other buffets we walked through a few at breakfast and dinner just to see if we were missing anything. We were not. The buffet at the Palace definitely had the best selection. The a la cartes were also very good, especially the ones at the Palace (the Brasserie was our favorite). We booked 4 a la cartes the night we arrived and were told we could only book 1/day after that (however it depended on the employee you happened to get). Barcelo really needs to get with the times and get an app so that people can book their a la cartes, look up menus, see activity schedules, etc. - The stretch of beach was great to walk, we saw turtles without having to go out too far in the water - I enjoyed the few evening shows we watched. The magic show and Michael Jackson ones were our favorites. There are three theatres in the complex with two of them being outdoors (much preferred for me as I'm always too cold in air conditioned spaces). The shows could be promoted more - it wasn't easy to find a schedule of shows and it was sad to see the Palace theatre so empty some nights. - Lack of beach/pool chairs: this has to be my biggest complaint and the one thing that might stop me from booking this resort again. As many people have already commented, you needed to get up at the crack of dawn to secure chairs. I will say this depended on where we wanted to sit. The adults only pool (which was our favorite because it was closest to our room plus the bar/bathrooms were not as busy) was completely full by 7:00 am. If we wanted chairs around the kiddie pool (which we did not) we would have found some at 8:30 or 9:00 when we went down for breakfast. However, it was just a hassle to be setting an alarm to get chairs. Barcelo, BUY SOME MORE CHAIRS! It's a spacious resort and there is tons of room for more chairs, especially on the beach. Patrons should not be expected to get up so early to secure spots for their day, nor should they risk altercations with other patrons when reserving chairs with towels or removing towels from chairs (which we did witness). They could also consider adding some washrooms. Given the size of the resort and the number of people, washrooms were few and far between and often resulted in lineups in the womens' one.
Lastly I want to mention our experience with Westjet Vacations/Nexus. This had nothing to do with the resort but heads up for anyone booking an excursion: we were told a pick up time that was two hours later than when they actually came to pick us up. The Nexus reps were apologetic and offered us a refund but it was a major hassle to actually get our money back. Double and triple check details of your excursions should you happen to book one!!!

We went to the Barcelo Mayan Palace for a 10 day vacation in September/October. It has a wonderful Mexican charm with bright colours and Mayan statues throughout. The check-in time time was about 15-20 minutes as they make photocopies of your passport and put a bracelet on you. Room was not ready until 3:00 pm so we got our bathingsuits, flip- flops etc from the carry-on. We arrived at noon, so we went to lunch, then to the beach. Important: bring 'watershoes' for the beach as there are some rocks and the beach is not very sandy as there is only a thin layer of sand on top, but once you are in the warm ocean it is sandy. Where the Palace is situated is in an delicate eco-system: a forested area with lots of birds, fish and we even saw a deer. One previous reviewer complained about not being able to eat food around the pool, it could be due to the birds! The area is great for snorkeling with lots of fish and sea-turtles. In fact, the area is so good for snorkeling that boats come with young children to snorkel in front of the Mayan Palace! There are free banana boats, kyacks etc and for a fee you can rent jet skis or go parasailing. The complex is kept neat and tidy as the maintenance people are constantly painting, sweeping, gardening etc. The hotel room was spacious with a king size bed, lots of towels, a double sink and large shower. The AC is adjustable so you can set it to what temperature you like. The rooms are situated in a garden courtyard with beautiful statues, benches and fountains. We were able to select 5 restaurants rather than 3 as end of September is slow season. Kyoto was very nice as was Brassiere, Trattoria & Rodizio(Ă—2). Lots of choice at the Mexican buffet too where the servers greeted us with a warm smile and were quick to get us drinks & to clear off the tables. Bar service was good. The pool was huge and spacious, with lots of water spouts, there is a fun kids pool too. There was a lot of seating in the sun and in shade, but we went in low season so no need to fight for a lounger. The adult pool is tucked behind the Oaxaca rooms wing and is quiet. There is a lovely covered walkway which is awesome to protect hotel guests from too much sun or rainfall!!! There are about 6 hotels in the Barcelo complex ex. Riviera Adults Only, Beach, Caribe, Colonial, Tropical, Palace. There is also a dolphin show at one of the resorts nearby. All in all, a wonderful vacation at Barcelo Mayan Palace.

Barceló Maya Palace is a beautiful paradise to visit. My husband and I spent 5 glorious nights in an exquisite large junior suite in the Michoacán building—not too far from the lobby. All rooms have wonderful balconies. The restaurants here are outstanding and quite gourmet. At Restaurante Rodizzio, we were well cared for by head waiter, Marcos Cruz and his assistant, Raul Campos. Marcos was personable and very professional. He really made our night very pleasant and truly enjoyable. Thanks so much Marcos. Our favorite thing was having breakfasts and lunches oceanfront at the Buffets. You can choose to sit inside or outside, but we couldn’t miss the beautiful ocean scenery outside. The resort is immaculately cared for and very clean with gorgeous grounds. Everything is a picture. We enjoyed afternoon coffee and cordials in lounge chairs facing the ocean. There is also a bus shuttle that transports you to the other Barcelo resorts. My husband and I would take the shuttle to visit the Casino at the Tropicana resort and to have cocktails at the Colonial resort where they make wonderful Mojitos. A great dinner can also be had at the Santa Fe restaurant at the colonial. But nothing tops the Palace Resort for beauty, scenery, and ocean views everywhere you go. Truly, it is a paradise.
Tip: Be sure to place a towel on the chair of your choice at the beach before going to breakfast in the morning—otherwise you may not sit in your preferred location.

To be 5* you dropped a few. At reception it is very difficult to get useful information because they hardly know anything. There's a clerk who calls you twice from the Guest Office, I don't know why, relays complaints to you and barely responds like a robot. Deficiencies identified: Urinaries stuck accumulating pee in the hotel itself, the unmade room after having requested it twice throughout the day and that we left it at 5 am; the bin emptied it when it came to them even if it had trash; the minibar randomly replenished it; one day the cleaning staff left a can of Pepsi open in the room as if nothing; another day I lost some lenses that I left in the bathroom (good thing they were daily use)... I could be bored of telling details, at no time nor an apology or purpose of amendment, or anything. If you choose this hotel for the food...very repetitive...but beware, we try to go to another buffet of another hotel and run out. The air conditioning machines in the rooms mount a care shower, so at night you have to choose between noise and/or heat. Getting a shade in the pool after 9 am is mission impossible. They do not control the use of the facilities by other guests of nearby hotels when it is assumed that Palace can and the rest cannot (at least this is how they sell it to you). The accommodation in the buffet for lunch and dinner, crazy, with free places made you wait for a lady to decide if it was time or not... we found no explanation, neither we, nor other Spaniards... The sandy beach was pretty scarce on many stretches, it looked like you were on tarmac. Finally, it is assumed that you are entitled to one Reservation per day in the "non-buffet" restaurants of the hotel complex. Well, it's mission impossible. Of 10 Reservation Rights we managed to execute 4: In French, fine but you go hungry, they associate French food with shortage in the dish; Caribbean, dispensable, seafood scarce in flavor. Yes, the recommendations made by the waiter for some dishes were correct; El Rodizio, if you like meats, is very good and large, suitable for eating instead of dinner; Mexico Lindo, the very interesting Mexican food, perhaps the best of the 4 we were in. The location of the hotel forces you to have transportation which makes excursions very expensive. I would recommend something in Playa del Carmen if you are going on many excursions. The dive center, which for us was an attraction of the hotel...very fair (I leave review on the corresponding site). In short, very expensive and with few guarantees, we took two dives in Cozumel and mixed with many people and various levels, obviously a person with very little level took it upon himself to frustrate the two dives. Water activities organized in the same company, very very expensive. Eye if it's one of your areas of interest.

In general I highlight the positive aspects: state of the facilities, everything looks impeccable and well maintained; the attention of the staff, in general always ready, with a smile, very pleasant.
Regarding the location of the resort itself, the beach is somewhat (quite) rocky, which makes access to the sea a little difficult. Recreational activities, in general, were of higher quality than those in adjacent hotels (which could be accessed).
Regarding the Premium Level service, much to be desired. I absolutely do not advise paying a higher rate for this service and/or purchasing a membership. I am a member, I acquired my membership at Barceló Bávaro Palace (Dominican Republic) and I expected to obtain the same quality of service at Maya Palace and that was not the case. At Maya Palace everything has an additional cost, it is very difficult to find availability in the restaurants (even when we went in low season), themed pools with an additional cost, limited nautical activities (e.g. sailboats prioritize availability for rented activities, rather than loans). to guests), the "priority" check in had a longer delay than the traditional check in, as an alternative restaurant they only offer a space within the premium level sector with a very restricted buffet offering (unlike the Bávaro Palace that offered exclusive restaurants for lunch and breakfast a la carte). Another detail that they sell but do not offer at Maya Palace: nightly amenities, bottle of rum/tequila, gift for children, pool towels in the room, etc. - I insist that they are details that in our case do not affect the experience but do lose any It kind of makes sense to pay a differential rate. I also add that in theory the room should have a preferential sector, instead it has been in front of the main and children's pool, with constant noise and the sea view very restricted.
To date our complaints have not received a response.

The cost to stay at the Palace is absolutely not worth it. We were given a single bed room when we booked a double, told it couldn't be changed because there wasn't another room open. However, the room directly beside us was open for almost our entire stay and was the exact kind of room we booked. I asked to be moved twice and was told there were no rooms. The check in process took us over an hour, not including the long wait in line, and staff were having personal conversations that stalled the check in process while a long line was waiting. Nothing at all was explained to us about how things work, where restaurants are located, where pools were, or even what the towel cards were for. The lack of hospitality and quality service from the reception desk throughout our stay was very disappointing. The safe didn't work. Electrical outlets fell out of the wall while in use. There was significantly less shaded options around the pool at the Palace than there were at the other areas of the resort. And other pools had more than one bar around them as well, the Palace did not. The only options for late night food is to pay extra for room service (even though it is all marketed as all inclusive), or to walk for 20 to 30 minutes to the clear opposite end of the property for some kind of crappy bar food. The overall service, quality of stay, and amenities were significantly better at other midrange resorts than they were at the Palace. Which is supposed to be the high end part of the resort (it's certainly priced that way!) The restaurants were fine, but really should be better considering the costs, again. And the "specialty" restaurants were okay too, but nothing to write home about. Housekeeping staff were AMAZING. They checked the room more than once most days and respected our request to make sure the ceiling fan stayed on in the room when they finished cleaning. The entertainment staff try hard and work well with what they have! But the over all options for entertainment are quite disappointing. The cost of things on the resort was absolutely outrageous too. The Tiendas down by the Maya Mall were lovely, and it would have been nice to see more of that, as opposed to overly marked up, very amercanized items in the gift shops. You are much better off to stay at a Lower priced resort with more to offer!

Barceló Maya Palace: where the sun is hot, the food is great, and the pool chair situation feels like “The Hunger Games: Resort Edition.” 🏖️🎯
We were a family of 6, with kids varying from age 11 to 29 who made the trip to Mexico for the week of Christmas to be “less stressed”. Our check-in experience wasn’t great — we had two rooms: family suite for my husband and I with our two younger kids and a junior suite for our son and his girlfriend. Even though we had both rooms on the same booking, they put us in two separate buildings. We requested for them to move our son to our building which they were able to accommodate, but the family suite was three hours late past their normal check-in time, and even when we were told the suite was ready, we showed up and had to wait outside our door while the housekeeping team was still cleaning. Also neither rooms keys worked so we had to make the 10 km hike from the rooms to the front desk back to the rooms twice just to get the keys re-programmed.
Our family wasn’t going to let this early experience ruin our trip, so we tried to turn things around the next day. Boy, were we surprised…
While the property is stunning and the meals are top-notch, the daily scramble for chairs brings out a level of human behavior I thought was reserved for Black Friday sales. When we came out to watch the sunrise at 7:20am, about 90% of the pool and beach chair were gone. All towels, not a soul in sight. “No reserving chairs” signs everywhere. The property is huge, there are five different complexes to the Barcelo grand resort. On Christmas Eve there was not a single pool chair or beach chair available across all five properties by 10 o’clock in the morning. That’s insane.
I don’t blame anyone for needing to do this for their families so that they can enjoy a day beside the pool. There are definitely not enough pool chairs to accommodate the number of guests at this resort. And this is the only resort we’ve been to where you do not have the option of purchasing a cabana on the family side, which we would’ve been happy to do. You are only able to buy a small bed on the adult only poolside.
Would we come back? Probably not—my sanity can’t handle another round of resort chair squid games. If you do come, May the odds be ever in your favor.

Let me start with the good. On the whole, the food was very good, some of the best we have had in Mexico. The serving staff at all restaurants, including the buffets were very friendly. Also, the cleaning staff (maids) were excellent and very punctual, every day they restocked the room and gave us fresh towels, etc.. The whole of the resort grounds are kept very clean and the beach is kept very clean as well.
There are a couple of big negatives which could be easily addressed by the resort. Our check-in experience was bad, it took an incredibly long time for the three or four agents at the front desk to check people in and they seem to spend a lot of time chatting to people, especially Spanish speaking people. A number of other reviewers have mentioned the same issue. It really needs to be addressed because reception is the first impression that everyone gets of the resort and increasingly this is not a good impression. Management has to really jump on this issue.
Second, and this is caused by the selfishness of selfish guests staying at the resort, it is very common to see people reserve chairs on the beach and then not show up for five or six hours. Some of these people have the nerve to also reserve chairs at one of the pools at the same time as they are holding chairs at the beach. The resort should hire more security to enforce the no reservation of chairs rule. It is one thing for people to reserve a chair and then leave for an hour for breakfast or lunch, but it’s quiet another to simply hog the chairs for the entire day and not show up until much later. At the sister resort which is adults only, there is strict enforcement of the reservation of chairs rule.
In busy times there are not enough chairs on the beach, such that you have to be up by seven in the morning to reserve a chair, and no palapas for shade so you have to rely only on palm trees here and there.
I think it is against the law in most places in Mexico to smoke on the beach. Tourists totally disregard this and smoke anyway. If I’m right about the law, the resort should strictly enforce the no smoking policy, except in designated araeas (the resort has provided these but due to lack of any enforcement of the rules, people smoke anywhere. It is very annoying to guests who do not smoke, especially those with breathing issues.

This was our first visit back to Barcelo Palace since pre-covid, and boy has it changed for the worse. Today we are on day 5 of our 2 week stay, and I’m debating just leaving here early and going elsewhere. The vibe at the Palace used to be upscale, nice and relaxing, but now it’s completely different, loud and chaotic. Hordes of people everywhere. Huge lines at the pool bar to get a drink. The worst thing is that there are far fewer chairs than are needed. Today I got the adult pool at 7:05 am and every single chair was claimed with towels, books, etc. And all the chairs at the pool and the beach will also be gone by 8 am. On 2 days here, I walked the entire beach around 10-11 am and not a single chair was free, from the Palace all the way down to the Beach resort. I talked to the front desk about it and the guy’s only solution was to recommend that I just remove any towels that are not accompanied by someone’s personal belongings. Right…. I saw a guest confrontation for that. Although there are a few signs saying that you can’t save chairs, there are no Barcelo employees at the pools or the beach to enforce it – I haven’t seen 1 security guy or beach/pool attendant in our 5 days here. So it’s a free for all, again loud, chaotic and not the place I remember at all. Think twice before you book here.

First off, I wouldn't call this a luxury hotel in North American standards but it is a beautiful resort, well maintained, nice big rooms with so much variety in food and activities. Loved swimming with the sea turtles who live in the sea out front, white sand beach and turquoise waters, staff attentiveness and kindness, buffet food selection was abundant and the resort was spectacularly clean. Shuttle around the resort was great too. We loved the beach grille at the Palace for breakfast and lunch and had a lot of fun in the many pools, kids waterpark and really enjoyed the Japanese restaurant. :) This resort is massive! I felt safe and it was a really lovely time with my son.
If I had to be picky: bring washcloths or soft towels from home. Nighttime is on the quiet side but the shows were all very good. Parents with kids may want to ask for a room closer to the pool.
